Breakdown Services Guide
Breakdown services can be hugely beneficial for private customers, keeping them on the road and able to carry out their duties such as commuting to work. However, the importance of breakdown services takes on added momentum when it comes to running a fleet of vehicles for a business.
With such importance placed on getting vehicles on the road and in action as quickly as possible, many breakdown service providers now offer exclusive packages just for fleets.
What is a breakdown service?
Breakdown providers – including the likes of the AA and the RAC – aim to answer your call at the roadside and help you get moving again as quickly as possible. Among the services typically offered by breakdown companies include:
- Roadside Assistance: This will see a breakdown specialist sent out to assist your vehicle when it breaks down away from your business or home.
- Recovery: Many providers will offer recovery for you and up to seven passengers to any UK destination.
- At home: You probably know the feeling of struggling to get your car started in the morning. Thankfully many breakdown services will come out to you and assist you if you breakdown at home or at your business.
- Onward travel: If your vehicle can’t be fixed at the roadside, many breakdown services will help you get to your next destination and may even offer car hire for a limited period.
- European cover: Some breakdown services will extend their breakdown services to breakdown, fire and accident service across the continent.
So what about fleet breakdown cover?
Fleet breakdown services are different from other forms of breakdown cover because it will be designed specifically around the needs of your business. Features can include:
- Additional cover options: Many fleet breakdown services provide additional cover for business customers such as: accident assistance, providing help and advice at the scene of an accident and offering guidance to help resolve issues relating to legal matters and personal injuries; and legal care, to help your business recover any uninsured losses as well as arranging for vehicle replacements.
- Tailor your cover: Many companies will offer different fleet breakdown services depending on how your fleet is structured. So for example, if you have a fleet of commercial vehicles it may offer a service such as load continuation to ensure whatever you were transporting reaches its destination; or if you run a dealership there may be breakdown cover available for all of your used cars.
- Discounts: Some fleet breakdown services will offer discounts to reflect the fact that you are taking out breakdown cover on numerous vehicles. This may range from discounts on individual membership for company car drivers; to discounts on additional services offered by that company such as tyres or car insurance.
So what makes one breakdown service better than another?
With so many fleet breakdown services to choose from it would be easy to assume they are all the same and simply opt for the cheapest option. However, while price is an important factor there are other considerations too:
- Average call-out times: Can the fleet breakdown service get to your vehicles quickly to ensure you do not have too much “down time” and to get your business functioning as quickly as possible?
- Cover options: Does the fleet breakdown cover reflect the needs of your business: for example, if your vehicles regularly travel abroad, are you covered for European breakdowns?
- How to pay: Paying for breakdown cover can be expensive – so what options are available? Is there simply an annual subscription or can you pay on use?
- Specialist vehicles: Ensure that the breakdown services you choose can cover the types of vehicles in your fleet such as minibuses, taxis, etc.
