FIAT consumer reviews

Bought the Fiat Doblo 1.9 Multijet Dynamic. After four days it had to go back, brakes were not working properly - it rolled down drive into busy road. Another two weeks due to knocking on steering, the excuse was fitted with wrong wheel bearings, the cup at the top of the macfursons strut full of rust, their excuse was it was road dirt. the car had done 200 miles. The rubbers round the rear windows were porous on the inside and full of sand and last week we were climbing up a hill and the accelerator pedal stuck. DISGUSTED! WENT BACK AFTER 1 MONTH - LET FIAT HAVE THE TROUBLE.

Will be a geat car when Fiat fix the knocking noise that occurs when changing up gears at above 2000 revs... i.e. most of the time. The diesel version is apparently prone to this - buyer beware. After 4 months no fix as yet.

Elle, Lancashire on the Fiat Ducato

The 5 stars on this report are nothing to do with a Ducato... they are for the people who have written reviews on here. We saw a Ducato on the road and liked the look of it so we went to a few dealers and looked them over. Naturally the dealers told us just what wonderful vehicles they are and very nearly talked us into putting down a deposit there and then. Because its a lot of money we decided to come home, think about it and then make our decision but I know my husband had already made up his mind to buy one and was just humouring me. I decided to look online for some reviews/opinions/etc to make up my mind one way or another .... I found this site and I am soooooooooooo grateful for the honesty of all the contributors. We will NOT be buying one. Thank you all for not letting me waste my money.

Janet, Inverness-shire on the Fiat Panda 4x4

We live in an area which has snow and ice every year, and at the end of a steep drive. I took delivery of my Fiat Panda 4 x 4 at the end of September and am completely delighted. It is very comfortable, light and easy to drive, holds the road well and will do any speeds I want - up to the limit. Since December 18th we have have temperatures below freezing, with since just before Christmas, up to 30cms of snow. The Fiat has been absolutely brilliant in slush, deeper snow and on slopes. It gives a great sense of confidence. Added to this, it looks so cute and makes everyone smile. If you need a small car for all conditions, buy this!

Gareth, Staffordshire on the Fiat Grande Punto

 star rating

Bought the car in January 2008 from new and have covered 32000 miles in 12 months with no problems other than a new battery! These cars are fantastic regardless of engine size or specification. The 1.9 Jtd is seriously quick once moving (only group 6 insurance) and can blow off most 2.0 litre cars with out a problem and return 50 mpg on a run! Only thing I will say is that servicing costs are a bit steep!

Absolute c**p, makes a Trabant look like a Rolls Royce, do not buy one, you have been warned.

Dave, England on the Fiat Fiorino

Positves: Good trim and controls, engine responsive, load area surprisingly large. Negatives: Economy no where near the claimed 70mpg more like 45 even on long runs. Do Not Purchase this van if you need to leave anything of any value in it. It has been borcken into twice costing £1300.00 in tools the first time and £760.00 the second time, even after a market stainless steel back plate was fitted to the rear door handle /lock. Fiat not interested so be warned DO NOT BUY

Fiat Punto 1.2 is a load of rubbish, it runs at 3,000 rpm off and on instead of ticking over. MPG is not even 38mpg where these people get 60mpg I just don’t believe it, driving on the flat at 55mph I can not get over 45 mpg. I had the car in the dealers they charged me £1,006.29p to change two sensers on the carburetor top part (its fuel injection but the thing that looks like the carb under the air filter. After 2 days went back no good revving again on start up they changed other sensors and tuned it £475. I went away, couldn’t get 45 mpg and the same fault. Went back and moaned I spent £1,500 here and the service and MoT last month, which cost £623 makes it over £2,000. WHAT A USELESS CAR THE PUNTO IS AND ITS ONLY DONE 30,000 MILES. THE WORSE CAR I HAD IN 50 YEARS MOTORING TOTAL RUBBISH I WILL SCRAP IT THIS WEEK.

Paul, Lancashire on the Fiat Scudo

My 2008 plate 2l diesel has done approx 65000 miles, on my 3rd rear anti rollbar, several sets of suspension bushes have been fitted, intercooler exploded at approx 30k, currently waiting on a front lower suspension arm and cv boot to arrive and be fitted under warranty. I also suffer from clutch judder when leaving junctions and every day it has a new clunk or bang from somewhere. It’s being used as a taxi in Lancaster, a very popular choice for taxi’s in this town but every time I go to the dealers with it they have a stack of taxis in there for warranty work. Loads are suffering from flywheel/clutch replacements, anti rollbars, bushes, instrument clusters packing up. One of my friends has been in for all these faults and is now being put on a jig as they suspect the wheels/body is all out of line, its going back to Fiat under the consumers act of unfit for purpose.

Marc, Ireland on the Fiat Sedici

 star rating

I have owned my Sedici for just over a month and I have to say I’m falling in love with it! I bought a brand new pre registered (in 2008) model with zero milage and I do believe I got myself a bargain! The ’emotion’ or ’eleganza’ as its called in the UK is the top spec model which originaly sold here in Ireland for close to €23,000 (I know we get ripped off big time over here.) Well at that price the car never really sold over here so Fiat decided to slash the price in half to clear their stock as there is now a newer ’facelifted’ model.. so happy days for bargain hunters!! So I have myself a brand new 4x4 for €12 grand!! Well I better review the car... I love the driving position, it gives you great confidence on the road, the interior is not as plush as I would have expected from a top end Fiat, but then again I think that it is a Suzuki interior!! So to echo a previous reviewer there’s no point banging on at Fiat when it’s mostly a Suzuki. The engine noise is a little on the loud side as most reviewers have stated! A couple of niggles: The drivers door controls don’t illuminate at night so you have no clue what you’re pressing when it’s dark!! I find this a major irritant, especially as the 2002 Skoda Fabia I traded in for the Sedici had! Other little details like not being able to close windows once you have turned off the ignition or taken out the key can also drive you mad!! Also, the headlights stay on even after you have turned off the engine which can catch you out!! But that said these are minor details considering the bargain I have got! I bought the car just after the big snow in January and i have to admit I’m secretly hoping for another blanket of snow to put this little 4x4 to the test!!

William, Scotland on the Fiat Scudo

The only problem was the heat-shield, like the other previews I have that knocking sound at the rear, I think it’s the suspension. Two years old and 89000 on the clock, it’s a good van.

Anne, Yorkshire on the Fiat Doblo

 star rating

I have had a Fiat Doblo 1.3 multijet from new, 2008 as a motability vehicle. From the first day of driving the vehicle the door sensors were showing doors open, buzzing and even your indoor lights flashing when driving in the evening. I have had to turn the alert buzzer off via the menu system as it was driving me nuts. Had the rear door lock replaced, no different. ABS failure alert when starting up and periodically getting air bag error, resetting of the date time and mpg data etc. Obviously to me it certainly seams an electrical fault. But getting a solution seems bleak. Accelorator pedal sticking. Been back with it to the dealers without much success. This is a shame as otherwise I would have found the vehicle ideal for my mobility needs. It’s comfortable, plenty of room, and great boot space. The size of the engine is pretty good for a 1.3 engine and it drives well. The customer service is very poor from Fiat, I certainly will not be looking in getting another one. The 2 rating is because I have so far not had a solution to the faults in question.

Wayne, Yorkshire on the Fiat Croma

 star rating

Had the car two years now, all ok apart from the boot door switch not working from time to time but I’ve found a way to make it work by tapping the door handle above the switch it works give it a try. The next problem is the gutless engine in Yorkshire we have plenty of hills and this engine hates them. There’s no torque what so ever so to achieve a moderate hill you have to drop two gears. It’s a must to keep the revs above 2000 rpm. It’s supposed to have 140 bhp but i’ll be damned if I can find it. Avoid the 1.8 petrol model. Apart from that the car is a beauty plenty of room, well kitted out aswell for a dynamic, very good on long distance runs. Fuel consumption could be better though. If I was to buy another I would definitely buy the 150 jtd.

Derek, Lancashire on the Fiat Grande Punto

 star rating

I bought it from new and it has got to be the worst decision I have made. There have been numerous problems with condensation, suspension , glove box and seat belt. At the moment I am considering taking it to another dealership because I am starting to have problems with condensation and a knocking noise at the rear. The condensation becomes an even bigger problem when the frost comes because it ices up on the inside of the windows. Therefore I need to scrape off the ice then wipe down the inside. For my troubles Fiat awarded me a £50 voucher (how big of them)Needless to say I will not be buying another Fiat ever again.

James, Buckinghamshire on the Fiat Grande Punto

 star rating

The best car i’ve had! So far had no problems during my 11000 miles of use. In my view the best looking car of its size and great value at £10400 for the 1.9 diesel Sporting, which has high spec and a super engine thats very fast and does 45mpg.

Dennis, Gloucestershire on the Fiat Ducato Maxi

 star rating

Had I done my home work I would not have bought this vehicle. It’s nice to drive on the freeways and main highways but I hit a medium to small dog on the highway and was stunned by the amount of damage. The vehicle is weak in body (plastic and tinplate) and there is no front end protection. I use the vehicle (a winnebago RV) to roam Australia and do not dare take it off a sealed road as it performs badly with wheel slip (they have tried to correct this with some stupid electronic device ,so they know about the problem.) The DUCATO MAXI VAN is a delivery vehicle so should be ok on all formed roads sealed and unsealed, weather permiting on unsealed. I have contacted FIAT and they informed me by email that I should not drive on unsealed gravell roads?????? Enough said. I rate this vehicle as poor for Australian conditions....I will be surprised if this report is ever published.

13 months ago we bought a Ci Carioca 705 motorhome with a 2.3 multijet diesel 6 speed mounted garbox. We have 2,000 miles on the clock and a serious reverse gear judder problem - daren’t even reverse onto the levelling blocks! Fiat have done 2 modifications. Sent up their technical man to test drive it. Judder is just as bad, but they say they have done everything they intend to do and that it is within normal limits. Our life savings and retirement dreams stand abandoned in the drive - we just cannot risk the expense of having to replace a burnt out clutch not covered under warranty. Our advice - DON’T TOUCH A FIAT WITH A BARGEPOLE. THEY DON’T GIVE A DAMN ABOUT THE LITTLE MAN.

Mervyn, Norfolk on the Fiat Ducato

 star rating

The van had to have a new starter motor with less than 10 miles on clock. It has been back twice for gearbox judder and vibration, the dealer confirms there is a problem. A Fiat technician road tested the vehicle and does not agree. Fiat will not give me the technician’s report. I just hate reversing uphill and I will never buy another Fiat comercial vehicle.

Pam, Devon on the Fiat Grande Punto

 star rating

I drove expensive German cars for over fifteen years but after having warranty issues with one of the big names I thought enough is enough. I had hired Fiats on holiday and liked them. I love my Grande Punto, is a capable economical and a well thought out drivers car. It’s not perfect but what is? I have paid more than twice as much for a car and it wasn’t perfect either. I paid extra for leather steering wheel and gear knob and through the lanes of Devon its performance and handling is not startling but competent and satisfying. By comparison other mass produced makes are very wooden and soulless.

Colin, England on the Fiat Ducato

Rubbish. Bought new from dealer 6 weeks ago. Broke down twice as we attempted to go on summer holiday. Has been in a FIAT garage in Redon, Brittany for 8 days now waiting a replacement part. Fiat Assistance are useless and there is no customer service. DO NOT BUY ONE!!!!!!!!!!

Mario, England on the Fiat Grande Punto

I bought the Grand Punto brand new in April 2008. Early April 2009 I had to take the car back for a knocking noise in the engine. Fiat kept the car for 4 months. End of July 2009 and they called me to say the problem has been fixed and that it was the diesel quiality and the injectors had been fixed. Three days after taking the car I had to return the car again. I was without a car for for months and never did they ask if I needed transport. I approached Fiat head Office in South Africa and they gave me a courtesy car. God only knows when I will get my car back from Fiat; this is a car that I am still paying instalments on. This company sells c**p and the first thing I am going to do when I get it back is sell it and buy a more reliable brand like Toyota.

William, England on the Fiat Ducato

We purchased a brand new Fiat Ducato Motorhome and broke down on our first outing with the loss of most of the engine coolant due to a faulty inboard heating unit. On the second outing we had to terminate our holiday early as the inboard battery became flat due to a faulty charger and an audio signal loudly emitted a bleeping signal which we thought would be audible outside the van as it was late at night. We have also experienced judder in reverse which we are about to register with Fiat. We are losing faith in this vehicle as we have experienced many teething problems.

Does anyone on here have battery problems? I bought my new CI Mizar Elite motor home on a Ducato base last October and within a couple of days the battery needed a jump start. We took it beck to the dealer who in fairness fitted a new battery without any quibble but since then, I’ve started the Ducato no less than 5 times since using jump leads because there was insufficient power in the battery to even turn the engine over. Of course, when you talk to Fiat they just shrug their shoulders and tell you that it must be driven regularly in order to maintain the battery. But for anyone else with the same problem, I suggest (and it probably won’t make a lot of difference anyway) that you have a look at the ’arrangement’ Fiat use on the negative side of the underfloor battery. I think I’m right in assuming that battery terminals should be "Tight" but the connection that Fiat use on their latest Ducato does seem to leave a lot to be desired as there is no way that it can be tightened sufficiently unless like me you release the connection and try to get it farther down the negative pillar, thus making a tighter connection. Although the connection on my battery is a ’tad’ tighter than before, the battery still loses all its power over the course of a week or so, and then I have to resort to jump leads again.

Ken, Buckinghamshire on the Fiat Fiorino Combi

 star rating

The Fiorino Combi is a very versatile family vehicle. It is reasonably well appointed, easy to drive with a good 1.3 multijet diesel engine. Handling is great and the car/van feels comfortable in all conditions. Negative points are that my vehicle is rated as a light goods vehicle and gets a massive £180 tax charge, whereas I expected to pay £35 for a vehicle with low emissions. Fiat are not too sympathetic. The other major negative is that fuel consumption is way down on the stated figure after 2100 miles I get an average of 46mpg and on a long run, no better than 49mpg. The car has been back to the dealer but they can find no problems.

Jennifer, Lanarkshire on the Fiat Punto

Fiat Punto Active 1.2 Stripe - Bought my car in Feb 08 brand new - had no problems - very smart little car - more space than you would think - boot’s a bit small - road tax is cheap and fuel consumption is even better - an all round good car.

Paul, Sussex on the Fiat Fiorino

 star rating

Collected my Fiorino van in Aug ’08, 4 miles on the clock. Drive mainly motorway miles and have done 11,500 miles. Poor dealer service as they are unable to source the oil as quoted in the handbook for any top ups stating that they would just put the oil that is in the drum in the workshop. Rear door hinges are showing some corrosion, been back to the dealer but have not heard from them in a week. Mileage flashes sometimes on the dash and the gearbox is now so notchy it will not go into gear, due back at the dealer on 26/01/09 for a test drive. Shame as van is good with 58mpg etc but the biggest issue I have is the reluctance of the dealers to offer any customer service.

Richard, County Londonderry on the Fiat Scudo Window Van

 star rating

I have owned one now for a year have covered 20000 miles. I had a lot of problems with the new Scudo - I drive wheelchairs about for a living so there is no speed involved. I’m now on my third set of brake pads in the front, 2nd in the back. The steering rack has to be replaced plus I’ve had fuel problems. If I could get out of the van not owing a lot I would but the resalable value on these vans is very poor.

Vanny, Leicestershire on the Fiat Scudo

 star rating

I had van new in 08 - worst van ever - pulls to left, seats worn out, paints patchy... oh, the best bit is it does 22 mpg. Fiat vans are a joke, fly wheel went - clunking noise at front. It had only done 10000, god knows what it will be like at 50000. DON’T BUY ONE! They’re scrap.

Christopher, Scotland on the Fiat Grande Punto

I bought the new Punto in June 2008 and I have to say it is a vast improvement on its previous models. Arnold Clark did a wonderful deal on the list price saving me a few grand plus trading my old Punto in - saved a few bucks too. The overall look of the car is quite stunning, nice curves great looking body kit, 17 inch alloys with low profile tyres and a fake but nice looking chrome tail pipe on the sporting model. You can also get a fully retractable sunroof on selected models and I do like the voice controls for your phone and iPod. The interior is very well made too. Sporty seat upholstery, racing seats, racing steering wheel etc. Down sides are not the greatest car at cornering but when your on the motor way this car can really shift even though I only have the 1.4 petrol engine in it. But stick an induction kit and a sports exhaust system on it and your laughing. Also I was rather disappointed that there is no spare wheel in the boot but instead they have given you a tyre filler pump gadget thingy. To be honest I have used these things in the past and I have to say they 9 times out of ten it doesn’t do what it says on the tin . They are MOT approved but I’d feel much safer having a spare wheel for the inevitable blow out instead of a tyre seal kit. I’m not sure how much they cost to replace once you’ve used them so look into it but imagine its cheaper that buying a new spare wheel but I’d still prefer to have one none the less. On the whole this is a great wee sports car but do go for the sporting model as supposed to the bog standard version, a lot more fun and you get a lot of kit for your money. But bare in mind, tyres ain’t cheap for this puppy so don’t go burning them out too quickly.

Mark, England on the Fiat Grande Punto

I have had 3 Grande Punto’s now as I upgraded in power each time; first with the 1.2 then the 1.4 8v and now I’ve got the 1.4 turbo. The first two were good cars but not with much power but the t-jet is a different class; it has a 0-60 time of less than most 2-litres and big cars and it is really comfy with the sports interior. I have had 135 mph out of it on the motorway and I highly recommend this car - you will not be disappointed. The only problem I have found with it is the standard of its cornering but as soon as I lowered it 20mm that problem disappeared. Now I have a straight through exhaust system, an induction kit, a turbo upgrade from mij performance, a dump valve and a remap and now it’s a beast with 233bhp and a 0-60 time of 5.7 and a top speed of 150. Trust me, this car has great power for the engine standard but now it’s uncontrollable and it only cost me an extra 3 grand to get it up to this standard. I take it to track days and pass ST’s and VXR’s... the lot - it even keeps up with Impreza’s. Don’t listen to these people with bad results there either dumb and break their cars or just cant drive. Like the one with the gearbox trouble LEARN TO USE THE CLUTCH IDIOT. And if you do buy a petrol definitely buy the t-jet.

James, Fife and Kinross Shires on the Fiat Fiorino

I work for Fiat and have taken the Fiorino for a brief test drive. It is a well-thought out subcompact that should be very economic - the 1.3 engine also only emits 119g/km, thus avoiding the congestion charge and helping the environment at the same time. I think that this will be a hit in the commercial sector.

Okay, I am a guy and I love the Fiat 500. Loved them when I was little and a neighbour had one - love them now. Drives superb, sport mode is divine and firms up the steering for motorway work and at speed. Comfortable for short or long journeys. If you offered me the chance to have my BMW 325 back right now I’d point blank refuse. Love the car - hope it lives up to the hype. So far it has!!!

This car is soooooo cute! The attention to detail of the interior takes my breath away. I never used to enjoy driving but since buying the 500 I’ve begun to find myself driving more and more often (not very good from a green perspective admittedly). For a small car it gives a great feeling of safety and security and a car that is pleasingly comfortable. There is something about the 500 that makes you feel like you are stepping back in time every time you open the door and get in - there’s something very 60s about it. The fuel economy is almost double what I’m used to and at a time of rising fuel prices and higher taxes on non-green cars I felt that this car was a pefrect choice in terms of style and finance.

A great looking little car, both inside and out. It also gives you a nice feeling of safety and security which is not always the case in a supermini. I would like to give the 500 five stars but the handling is not too hot and and the cornering leaves a bit to be desired.

I love the Bravo Grande Punto ish style, the only drawback is the small windows for kids in the back, and the rear window which I find ironic, but I have the parking advisers and... lot’s of gadgets, the standard ESP with AS/MSR and hill holder is quit excellent and the ride comfort is medium, on highways is excellent! The 1.6 105 HP is my selection and is so smooth it almost scares me! The interior design is trendy and modern, I love the Piano bits and the smooth fabrics in the dashboard, thought the hard plastics in the lower part of the car should be better, but well, I don’t put my fingers on those parts. The value for money, along with the excellent 1.4 T-Jet and 1.6 Mjet units give this car a 5*****

I took delivery of a new motorhome with the powerful 160 engine on 02/06/2008. We decided to pay the additional £1400 and go for the Comformatic auto gearbox. On delivery the speedo trip read 48 miles, and at 139 miles (3 days later) the auto box died and we coasted to a halt. Selecting manual control made no difference, we had no drive at all. The motorhome was taken on a low loader to my nearest Fiat comercial dealer where it has undergone one and a half days examination with the computer attached to no evail. The dealer has been liasing with Fiat to resolve the problem but so far no joy, Fiat have now told them to remove the gearbox so they can examine it further. Am I alone here or are there others of you out there that are or have experienced the same problem?. Just one final note the dealer(who shall remain nameless at the moment) refused to take the vehicle back and told us in no uncertain terms that he would not allow the breakdown truck to off load this new motorhome on their sales forecourt. How about that for customer service!

Had to have new wiper switches, washer motors, clutch and brake cylinders, frost calliper leaked, now total electirical failing, ABS , EBD, ASR and power steering failed. Then car imobilizer failed and locked car down I was stuck in town for 2 hours waiting for RAC, car still in garage they still have no idea what is wrong with it, I remain driving a rental Vauxhall Astra, its much better than the punto.

I have to say that I have not encountered any problems with the Ducato and in fact find the unit a pleasure to drive and own.

Main selling point design not price. Fiat made a good job. For my impression it has a good quality level, look to the welding points and battery connections. Petrol consumption OK. Mainly made for adults, safety belts on back-seat uncomfortable for children. Sportive car like Seat Leon, BMW One, Alpha 147 not optimised as a family and luggage car. My family drives a Citroen Berlingo and since 3 months the Fiat Bravo as the second car. Handfree speaking incl. Bluetooth TOP.

Have had our Doblo from new in April 2008, please with vehicle but not dealer. Day 1 couldn’t lock as dodgy sensor on back sliding door-obviously not PDi’d properly, also hardly sent out properly de-waxed and cleaned for a new vehicle. Loud clunck when steering on full lock-service manager said Fiat ’know about it’ and are working on modification-wait till 1st service. Since then clutch noise/burn and smell. Dealer have now booked in to get both problems sorted under warranty-want car for at least a week, it goes in next week-will keep you posted.

In April this year I bought a nice sunny new Fiat Ducato Base Motorhome; the 2.3 engine is very responsive and pulls well from low revs; the only problem I’ve had with the Fiat so far has been 2 duff batteries, 1 leisure and the engine battery. The dealer I bought it from replaced the leisure battery with no hesitation but it’s been a different story trying to get the engine battery replaced, the Fiat dealer has put up more fences than the grand national. I’ve contacted Fiat direct about it as I was worried about the service. It’s hard to get work done under warranty - what would the service be like to get an oil change? But I have to get it serviced by a Fiat dealer to keep the warranty active, they have informed me I can travel to Dublin to get this done! So, in conclusion, the main problem doesn’t lie with the Ducato but the dealers who service them. The first dealer I used even found a spare wheel on the van which was news to me as they don’t come with one! So that explains why I won’t be using them again. My Ducato has done over 5000 miles including a trip to Holland and many to the Republic of Ireland as well as England and I’ve had no problems with it so far (touch wood). One main note is to check the dealer service before you have any work done.

I brought this Fiat based motorhome in May 2008. From day one we have experienced a severe judder. It only been back to the dealers 10 times; I say only because we have now abandoned this heap of junk on the drive, we are totally sick of it. On every occasion we reverse we end up back at the dealers for several hours. To date we have only done 2100 miles, approximately 500 of these have been done by Fiat. The dealer is useless.

Hi everyone! Everything you read on the Fiat 2.3 multi jet is absolutely TRUE. I have owned every model of the Fiat since its first early model. Their latest model has not been tested fully. Otherwise why would these very basic problems exist. For example - water ingress and, very important, reverse vibration shaking the gearbox to pieces. If anyone says this vibration does not exist they are either doing what an ostrich does or they are a Motorhome salesman. If this vibration happened on one of their Ferrari’s then the problem would be cured in the pits, not in 2years. They know what this problem is but they are playing the numbers game. When they say their technical team are working on this problem, this is an insult to those very clever guys who built this otherwise good machine. I ask just how long have they been building commercials. Finally, if you have this van then you must get a case number for future reference.

As a driving instructor I cover a fair few miles, well over 30000 now and this car has been pretty reliable - I’ve had a couple of minor faults rectified but nothing drastic, and for the price you can’t really argue! And the dealer has been really helpful. This one has a lovely engine, with bags of torque making it fun to drive, yet still returns 40+ mpg. Lots of kit, and comfy seats make it a pleasant place to spend time - the bluetooth car kit works well and is simple to use, the usb music player is brilliant and sounds great. It’s a great looking car and my pupils seem to love driving it - what more do you want?

Took gearbox out & dealers told him the clutch has exploded due to driver error & that it is the second clutch it’s had in 57000miles & there is no warranty on it so £800+ thank you very much! I personally saw the old clutch & the springs had tried shaking themselves free... this causes the judder which many are complaining about & eventually will explode. How can this be driver error when so many people are complaining of it? Are all the complaints from bad drivers? Come on Fiat... Get a grip!!!!!!

Whatever you do - don’t buy a Fiat Ducato!!!!!! There are two very serious problems; one can kill you the other will kill your bank account. Fiat denies all responsibility and knowledge of course. 1. Steering mechanism where it leaves the cab has a rotating bolt that can catch on items - in our case the factory fitted carpet caught on it resulting in total seizure of the steering system, fortunately at low speed so we survived. Fiat’s response - not our problem! Checked other types of vehicles and these either have protection, bolt higher up out of harm’s way or no bolt protruding. 2. Judder on reverse - one burnt out clutch in 3000 miles. Lots of others Fiat owners appear to have this problem - Fiat say it’s within specification. In our view Fiat are both incompetent and acting in a criminally negligent way. They are producing vehicles they have serious defects and they know it. Whatever you do - DON’T BUY FIAT! Pity there isn’t a negative rating.

I fell in love with the looks of the car and thought it would be great to have a Fiat again after owning them in the 70s-80s. Also I foolishly believed the top gear magazine road test which made great claims about the gutsy performance. The reality is that the 1.4 8 valve engine is totally inadequate to give anything like performance of any kind. Quality is also poor e.g. door handle broke after 1 month; knock from flywheel area from new (never got sorted dealer didn’t give a b****r) all warning lights come on for no reason then went off next day on their own (dealer thought I was lying). I got rid of it after 1 year and bought an 8 year old Honda for 1500 quid from an auction which I still own (now that’s a proper car). No, all in all the Grande Punto was the 1st brand new car I have ever bought and the last. It was a disappointment to say the least.

I was offered drive away in an hour with free insurance and a years road tax from dealer Stoneacre in Liverpool. I couldn’t resist - it was my first ever brand new car. After a day I realised why they offered such a great sounding package - the car is a pile of poo. Gutless to the extreme - boring to drive. Anyone with size 8 or bigger feet has to take their left shoe off because no space on footrest. After one day there is a clunk from transmission on pulling away and gear changing (dealer said changed engine and gearbox mounts) never cured fault. After 2 weeks drivers door handle broke (replaced). 3 months all dash warning lights came on then went off on my way to dealers (they said I was imagining it). NEVER EVER AGAIN CIAO FIAT. I got rid at 12 months old and bought a second hand Honda Accord - a proper car!!

I have had this van for almost a month and a half now, picked it up new with delivery mileage on the clock. From day one the van pulls severely to the left and is physically harder to steer to the right as opposed to the left. Visited the dealer twice to have the problem remedied (tracking, steering alignment, etc) problem still exists, even had the service manager out for a road test and was told these vans are harder to steer to the right than left and the camber of the road causes the van to pull left. I took the opportunity to independently road test 2 other identical vans and guess what? ....... they do not have any of the symptoms of my van.

Owning this vehicle is fun, the 1.9 diesel is a very good engine and more so in such a light and small car, it does sometimes deliver more power than the front wheels can hold but that adds to the excitement. All in all it is a very good car for the price, albeit a little small inside, the trim is fair and the ride is not too uncomfortable on long motorway journeys. To be honest it brings back my go-karting days and the smile that went with that, it still gives me a thrill when I floor it. It is such a shame that they discontinued the 4 door model in favour of targeting the sports market (young drivers) this model is only a few BHP behind the sports version and in my mind a far superior car and cheaper and just as fast, if you can find one buy it, it will save money on insurance, after all this one is a family car.

We purchased our Ducato van in July 2007. Since then it has been in and out of Fiat dealership constantly. The engine management light comes on it looses power (so called get home mode) and we have to park up lock /unlock many times for it to clear. This happens at least twice a day. Fiat have replaced many items on the engine management but to no avail, we are at our wits end. Our rating should be minus 5.

Disgusting customer service, noisy gearbox and clutch judder from new, Fiat could not diagnose correctly so advised to let it develop! Once the vehicle is 12 months old the clutch is no longer covered by warranty - beware. Terrible ride, if you want an MPVdon’t buy this and expect a car it’s most definitely a van, not a car. I purchased the van in May 2007. I specified a multitude of extras at what appears to be a very reasonable cost compared with other makes. Problem No. 1 should have set alarm bells ringing. At 100 miles from new the van was in workshop having tow bar and roof rack fitted, when it was moved there appeared a large pool of oil on the floor. Local fiat dealer had van off road for over a week and reluctantly lent me a Citroen Berlingo whilst sourcing replacement oil seal from Italy (could have come from the most remote African state, the time it took!) To cut along story short the van is now in another Fiat dealer workshop and there it has been for the last 5wks whilst awaiting a new gearbox. Fiat have not got the 1st idea about customer relations. I managed to get the dealer to loan me their demo Ducato (a fact that they regret now) but this is no compensation for the inconvenience of not having my sign written fully racked out, kitted personal van. Not once has anybody from Fiat or the dealership contacted me - I’ve had to ring them every time (via Italy!!!) Look at the Fiat web site they proudly advertise the fact that they are aware how dificult it is to be without your van for even as little as half a day!!! As of today there is still no date when the van will be fixed. SAVE YOUR PENNIES AND BUY A BETTER VAN - FORGET FIAT!!.

I purchased a Swift Bolero in May 2008 with the Fiat 2.3 Multijet engine. When we arrived back in Northern Ireland the engine would not start and I was left until last so as a mechanic could jump start it. A brand new vehicle. How embarrassing is that? The battery was dead and had to be replaced. I believe this is quite common with this vehicle but Fiat will not accept any responsibility for any vehicles that have been around for a while waiting for conversion. The motorhome dealer had to replace the battery. On my first trip away the injector warning light came on and the engine cut out. I was lucky that I was able to freewheel off the road into a lay by. I restarted the vehicle but the warning light stayed on so I continued on to my destination. A few hours later I started the vehicle and the light went out. This happened again on the way back just as I was approaching a coned off area on the motorway and I just got pulled in where the hards houlder ended. Again it started first time but the light stayed on. As the vehicle was dangerous I immediately booked it into a local Fiat dealer. On leaving my house I let the handbrake off and the button flew out of the end of it. I was on a steep hill and had to temporarily fix it while still keeping my foot on the foot-brake. On the way to the dealers the glove box door dropped open and it appears that it is a very bad fitting. The dealer has now fixed these items but can’t be sure that they will not re-occur. How can I trust such a vehicle? I intended to go to France this June but I think I should give it a longer road test before I go. While it was at the dealer they also did other warranty work including the cover for the engine to stop the water ingress. One of the technicians said he didn’t think this was lasting solution. A motorhome channel on YouTube shows the problem - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-TWjrqpO4rI

Handbrake in a stupid position, cup holders useless, fag lighter doesn’t stay in, storage compartment falls open when going over bumps. GET THIS ALL YOU DUCATO OWNERS...... some crooks punch a hole under the rear handle, push a screwdriver up it and hey presto, opens the back. I bought this Ducato based motorhome just over a year ago. It’s done nearly 7000 miles and has recently had its first service (a Fiat low mileage service) It’s great to drive, much better that my previous model Ducato with a 2.3 engine. The controls are all very light in comparison and you easily forget it weighs around 3 tonnes. Despite the low mileage, when it does get used it tends to be on 4 or 5 hour journeys and it is very comfortable over that period of time. I like its looks, handling, comfort and ability to haul around its permanent heavy load with relatively decent fuel economy. Problems? It’s had a recall done for an engine cover to prevent damage from water ingress. Another recall dealt with a steering rack issue. Separately from these recalls it’s currently on its third starter motor (including the one fitted at the factory) and the drivers side windscreen washer jet went phut. It was a bit juddery in first and reverse gear but that seems to have disappeared after it was serviced following a flash upgrade to its engine management computer. This also seems to have made it slightly more economical. I’m not impressed with my Fiat dealer though as they never seem able to fully deal with problems on a first visit.

Well tha’ts the first revenue miles in the doblo .First impressions count a lot; and I think I’m going to like this machine. Whilst some of the fittings seem a bit flimsy the window winders in particular and the very tishy bonnet release overall the van seems soundly made. The driving position is splendid, far superior to the combo for example because you are higher. The little Vauxhall is cosy but I always feel a bit short of view, but the combo and the doblo share the 1.3 dohc power unit. This is a belting engine (except the cam drive which is chain) smooth lively and economical: a winner. Will comment on any issues later.

Brilliant car. Well designed and amazing to drive. The power that is put out of such a small (but turbocharged) engine is flawless. Spec says you can reach 60mph in 8.9 however I think this time could be slashed in reality. The blue&me is very simple to use and is quite a nice addition to have your phones phonebook listed where your mileage is. Voice commands are very simple. You just click the "windows" button on the steering wheel and say "Help" and it tells you the available commands for that option level. Got mine for £10000 brand new and I love it! 5*****

I had this car for less than 1 year. I loved it initially, but after a few months, I was very concerned about depreciation and build quality. The thing tumbled in value enough to make me sell after 9 months. I had to cut my losses before the thing was worthless! Its nice to drive if noisy and not too bad off road. However, while it was well screwed together, after a few months problems began to appear - very stiff 6 speed box ( 2nd gear impossible to use when cold), the engine ran very rough when hot in traffic jams, and the dash/seats were getting very rattly. I won’t buy another Fiat.

I purchased the van last year as secondhand, with 4000 miles on the clock, August 2007. I have put another 14000 miles on the clock since, have encountered two faults: water ingress through the gap in the middle of the rain gutter below the windscreen, leaking onto the engine around the injectors and a warning light on the speedo to do with ignition/injection problem, went out after two days though. I tried to get the van in to have the warning lamp problem investigated, but could not get it seen to until over a week, by which time it had sorted itself. Van whent in for recalls at Guests Motors in Willenhall, could not see what they had done, as the gutter still leaks and no cover fitted to protect the engine from water ingress, just a smearing of some sort of gunk around the injectors. Van runs fine but seems to take a good while for the temperature gauge to rise to normal. Sometimes it idles a bit erratic when first startup then settles down once it has run. Glove box does not close tight and looks as though it is about to fall open when shut. No judder as yet on reversing. Don’t like the feel of the brake pedal when ABS is in use, feels like its running through grit. All said and done, I still prefer this van to my last one, Vauxhall Vivaro, nightmare on wheels!

Brilliant little car, on or off road it performs superbly. This is my second Panda 4x4 and still as enjoyable to drive as the first. Cheap as chips to run and you get all that off road capability - what’s not to love! Boot is ample for me and my partner but I agree it’s not huge so not sure how it would fare as a family car. A really fun car.

Purchased this van Nov 2007, van is OK apart from some problems. Problem 1 - uses a lot of oil. Problem 2 - water ingress in the rear of the van, this has caused the wood paneling to go moldy (only happens when it rains). Problem 3 - speedo in not accurate 10mph out of sync . Problem 4 - syncromesh has gone on second gear. Problem 5 - to many recalls on this van even though the van gets sorted out free of charge this still costs me in lost business of up to £800 per day as Fiat do not provide a loan van. Apart from these problems the van is good and puts a good image on my business; also very comfy. I had a Peugeot Boxer for 5 years and never had a problem with this.

So far so good but early days yet with just 400 miles on the clock and still listening out for problems - not that there should be but just going with what others say about the marque! A bit like the tardis as it has taken everything in so far. Probably a bit slow for those in a rush but I now have no problem in travelling at a speed that allows time to look at others rushing to earn a crust! Very comfortable seating wise, drives in a straight line and the consumption at a little over 40mpg for short journies will suit and hopefully get better with time. Well pleased so far and fingers crossed for the next 20 years....

We bought a Fiat Ducato/motorhome in May 2007. The engine has given us nothing but problems. The motorhome side of the vehicle is excellent with no problems. We had an oil leak so took it into the Fiat garage and they fixed it, we took it on our first intended two week holiday and had to return after two days with an oil leak, it went into the garage and it was fixed. We resumed our holiday and returned after three days another serious oil leak. The first two oil leaks were from the sump the next oil leak was from a seal behind the air filter?. We went off on holiday for a week and returned with an yellow light on the dashboard indicating ignition/injection problem. The garage said it was a clutch switch problem and tried to repair it but failed after two days, then the vehicle was recalled for FOUR recalls and the parts were fitted. We have not yet ventured out as the last part is being fitted at our house today, as not all the parts had been sent to the garage. Little faith in this engine.

I’ve had this van for 8 months and it is the best little panel van out there, in my opinion. Firstly, the cabin is designed like a car so it’s very easy to drive and extremely comfortable. It also has an amazing load space for such a small van and Fiat have really thought out their design well. I actually enjoy driving this van, rather than just having to, to do my job. Very stylish too. 5 out of 5!

In Feb 07 we bought a new motorhome on the new fiat platform Apart from a faulty cab aircon switch this has proved to a fabulous machine. It drives and corners so well you tend to forget you are driving a 3.5t vehicle It pulls from low revs in almost any gear and it will easily exceed the motorway speed limits At 70mph speeds will return 25mpg at a more leisurely 60mph 30mpg. If there is a complaint it would be reverse gear which tends to be geared to high

Just started a new job today and driving this van, and yes Julian, there IS a problem with the accelerator and brake pedals being too close together. Maybe I just have large feet (size 11) - I’ll have to dig out a pair of narrow shoes! But on the whole the van is good.

We run a Scudo minibus. It’s had a new clutch, 3 sets of tyres, new pads, 3 EGR valves, 4 or 5 head light bulbs, front ball joint. To change a head light bulb is near impossible - drivers side has to be done at dealership. We also run 3 12-seater Transits and these seem superior to the Scudo for reliability. We would never buy Fiat again, the EGR problems just leaves the Scudo in limp mode.

I bought my Punto after driving around in a mobility car for months and thought it time I got my own new car. At first I fell for the sleek body on the car and the interior was really nice too. I thought small car small engine will mean cheap to run. Well, aye, it was for insurance & fuel but after 2 months the rear seatbelt mount felt apart, so I took it back to Arnold Clark and tried to explain what was up but they said I must have broke it. Very doubtful, because I was mostly in the car alone going to and from work but they said they’d fix it under warranty. The tyres are hefty expensive too at £45 each. I had replaced all 4 tyres within 8 months of getting the car. Now I have had the car for just over 18 months and it needs new brake pads and discs according to Arnold Clark, aye, I think I might need new pads but I heard brake discs normally last years not months. My really cheap car now sits on my driveway until I can be bothered to get it fixed, its not all about the money, if I fix it this time then next week it will be something completely different. The Fiat Grande Punto is a load of s***!!!!!

Further to my last post in February, I have been driving this van now for two weeks. I really like it!! I wear a pair of narrow shoes now and the brake/accelerator problem is not really an issue now, although Fiat should do something about this. The three things I most like about the van are the excellent brakes, the turning circle and the very nice high driving position. I also like the responsiveness of the engine.

Picked up my used 2007 Croma (Ex Fiat Staff Car) for a huge discount off normal retail. Very happy with the car. I had a 120 bhp Alfa 159 when they came out and strangely I think the build and drive of the Croma are better suited to our roads. The drive is great, no fatigue after long runs due to great seats, acceptable levels of road noise and a good stereo. The 120 bhp is plenty of power I find I have to keep my eye on the clock on main roads, fuel ranges from 39mpg to about 47mpg on motorway driving which is very good for a car this size. I live in the Republic of Ireland and it seems the service here is a bit better than in the UK thankfully. But so far so good very happy with the car and no hesitation in recommending one to anyone thinking about picking one up second-hand!

I brought this car 3 months ago A great price at £5000 with only 7800 miles on the clock. I’m very happy, I use it every day to go to work its very comfortable for the 60miles round trip. A great looking car. The only problem is the road noise it is a little louder than other cars i have driven. But it is spacious fun cheap to insure and run. The garage I got it from has excellent customer care (research garage Nuneaton) and they did drop the price of this car by nearly £1000. Definitely worth doing a bit of market research seeing what you can get for your money and play them of against each other! Would I buy another? Without a doubt YES!

I bought this car new in January of 2008. It has covered 15,500 miles since and has been an excellent buy. I have had no issues with the vehicle. We have since had our first child and are surprised at how easily it copes with the baby seat and a pram in the boot. The performance is excellent from the little diesel, and will cruise happily on the motorway with plenty left in reserve. Economy is good too, it is easy to get 65mpg through a tank. My best is 74 although this was on A roads and did require a concerted effort. I enjoy having the air conditioning, useful for de misting on damp days as well as keeping the summer heat at bay. Build quality is good too, so nothing not to like.

I purchased a van on 22/09/07 from a local Fiat dealer. Faulty back light replaced 3 times. Fuel pump failed off road for 2 weeks. Back doors wouldn’t stay open. It is now been off the road for another week + waiting for passenger door mirror after someone knocked it off. I am not happy. I am changing van this week as the local dealer is useless. I hope I get better service with the new LDV. Was thinking of buying a new Fiat Panda for my wife but going to by Daihatsu now. I would like to warn other people not to buy a Fiat van or anything to do with Fiat. Lovely van let down by local dealers and Fiat’s attitude. The van is badged as professional but it doesn’t do what is says, it’s second rate. If you would like to phone me on this matter my number is 07968134260.

I’ve had this van for 13months (58k) now and it’s been nothing but problems. I’ve lost count at how many time it been to dealer; so far it has had new gearbox, clutch, turbo relay, turbo engine management system, reversing lights relay and countless other tweaking. It’s now a week after the turbo intercooler pipe came off and was replaced it has broken down again this time with yet more gearbox problems. I came to a roundabout today and put the clutch in and that was it - back to the dealer on the back of a low loader. That means that in 13 months it will have been off the road for about 4 months. Oooh the joys of buying a Fiat...

I have owned this car for 14 months, bought it new, I think it's a nice car, let down by niggles. All under warranty, I have had problems with, petrol cap lock, electric windows and heater. Shame because other than these flimsy items, it's a nice, enjoyable and likeable car. Cheap to buy and insure, good on petrol. It wouldn't stop me buying another Fiat, possibly because the competition is so dull. There really is nothing out there that interests me in this category. A great little car, fun to drive, cheap to run. No "locking diff" (I think?), no low range gear box (?), no bull (bars). Trundles across fields and up muddy slopes with apparent ease. Loves snow. Has been known to leave "Landie" drivers scratching their heads! If you need a "proper" 4x4 and also a very practical small car that can take friends to the pub and back, give this little Fiat serious consideration. Don’t be put off by the doubters - the internet has plenty of footage showing just where a Panda can roam! The only bad point is a "space saving"spare wheel - not much help when you have a puncture motorway. The tyres are "highway/ terrain" pattern, which some lazy fitters say can’t be got hold of - rubbish! They just take a few days to order but are needed to go off road. Finally make sure your insurance allows you to go in the mud - some don’t! This is the best little car I’ve ever owned!

A customer of mine has just taken his Ducato into the dealers with a broken clutch; he bought the van 3 months ago second hand. Took gearbox out & dealers told him the clutch has exploded due to driver error & that it is the second clutch its had in 57000miles & there is no warranty on it so £800+ thank you very much! I personally saw the old clutch & the springs had tried shaking themselves free... this causes the judder which many are complaining about & eventually will explode. How can this be driver error when so many people are complaining of it? Are all the complaints from bad drivers? Come on Fiat... get a grip!!!!!!

I have had no problems, one recall upgrade on fuse wires. I love the van, but... as a courier this van, although there is no denying that it works hard, in the first 6 months had a recall and I also reported a problem with check strap on the driver door. There was no problem, they replaced it. At the time I also pointed out rear driver door had dent coming out from inside van door. Van had first year service with Fiat, no problems. Now, after 8 months I have taken it back to report fault with rear doors not closing properly and that the top hinges on both doors the metal underneath has started to break open. In my disgust they said I had waited too long and that the check strap was broken and this caused the CONSEQUENTIAL damage to the top hinges of the rear door and this is not covered by warranty. So I took it a little further to Fiat customer service and they have returned an offer of £100 towards repair work and that I have to pay for the rest. As I feel ripped off due to the fact the warranty manager and Fiat customer services have made this decision on photos I do not feel that this is a fair warranty decision or customer care. I will not purchase another, cheers Fiat. This van has 3 years warranty and there is nowhere in the warranty manual does it say consequential damage is not covered or that you have to be a vehicle expert to notice damage being caused to your van so you can report it quicker. I have the van since Dec 07.

I purchased my Panda in December 07 and have had three problems up to date October 09. 1, rear discs binding after braking, loud squealing. Resolved after 12 weeks. 2, after approximately 12 months a sound like a worn cam from 1000rpm on but not at tick over; this problem has not been resolved to date. I was told by Fiat UK that as it did not effect the running of the car I had to put up with it. This is not in the sales literatue that I read before my purchase. 3, loud knocking from the left rear wheel area, loose bumper fouling on tow bar, new rear shocks fitted, dealer now thinks it may be a sub frame problem. I noticed today that the knocking seems to stop when the brakes are applied, could the brake caliper be loose? Any answers please.

My previous Scudo was brilliant, the new version has been a lot of bother. It has spent about six weeks at the main dealers, two oil leaks, windscreen split down the middle, rattling heat shield, suspension knocking noise still unresolved, exhaust gas recycle valve replaced after vehicle engine cut out several times (very scary on roundabouts with no power steering!). Also economy mode is frustrating, after being parked for ten or fifteen minutes with engine off, radio goes off and windows will not wind up. So, if you’ve had a break you have to start the engine to shut the windows before you get back to the job - some economy. Still not a bad van though, maybe I just got unlucky.

This van was easily the worst purchase we ever made. In the first week the heap wouldn’t start due to an engine management problem. The dealership put it down to jump starting!!! A week old van??? After this the gear box rattled like a bag of spanners and had to be completely replaced. To continue the windscreen washers failed for the first time and the entire door trim came off in my hand when closing the door. The central glove box then opened on its own and cracked itself nicely - it now has to be permanently locked to keep it in one piece. Next the windscreen washers failed again and had to be replaced. On came the engine warning light again and the van would stall on motorways losing all power for braking, steering and lights - nice... Now the side door decided to pop off - got that fixed but the closing sensor on the door then developed a problem and we had to disable the buzzer as it was driving us mental. The washers failed again and the drivers mirror has turned into a lettuce leaf - flapping in the wind and cannot be adjusted - the only alternative is a complete replacement at £400 plus vat. As i write we’ve been to the dealer again to have the windscreen washers replaced again and the door sensor repaired again. Nightmare - looks good, loads of room so one star but what a heap - do not buy this poor mans van!!!!!

What a disappointment this van is! The mpg is worse than the old model. The clutch and gearbox never felt right from new, the shuddering is awful in reverse but fiat told me this is not a common complaint but it obviously is. After 12 months the rear doors have split where the hinge bolts to the inner skin (check these out before your doors fall off.) The replacement doors lasted 9 months then the same thing occurred but Fiat then washed there hands of this problem so this is going to cost me lots of money. The doors are generally flimsy and squeak and rattle so bad that it drives me mad!! It’s going to be a sprinter for me next time!!

I got the Fiat Ducato 2.2 100hp van in 2007 absolutley brand new. After approx 7000 miles it was in the garage with an engine management problem. Fiat sent out a ’specialist’ to diagnose the problem, which took over 2 weeks. Luckily the dealer lent us a fiat doblo replacement vehicle with no first gear selection, and had to fight to get third gear! A couple of months later the van was back in the garage for another 2 weeks, this time it had many problems, e.g catalyst cracked, new turbo, oil leaks, in total this van has had 3 new turbos in less than 2 years. The van has had a problem with the tick over since day one, which has been attempted to be fixed but never lasts more than one day, then the tick over is faulty again and the van just cuts out. This van has been in the garage that many times I have honestly lost count, but we have averaged it’s every 8-12 weeks that it has to go back in. The van is knackered again and cut out on me on a busy road. It can’t stay running on idle or low revs, it just cuts out. We have rung Fiat many times and they offer NO help or advice what so ever, and will not admit to any fault of their own! The van has only done 40,000 miles and sounds like a bag of knackers. Also worth mentioning: the wipers have broken due to no fault of mine, both headlight motors have blown, both headlights hold water and are now mouldy inside, we have had the floor replaced in the cab due to a big hole appearing after 7000 miles. DO NOT BUY A FIAT, SERIOUSLY. NO CUSTOMER SUPPORT AT ALL. USELESS

I was slightly apprehensive about purchasing the Fiat, especially after reading the reviews on What Car, Top Gear etc. Let me tell you now this car is phenomenal, yes the steering does feel slightly light but this is a small issue when you consider the whole car. The build quality is fantastic, I did get caught out in thinking the build quality was questionable when I initially got the car as there was a persistent jingling sound. It turned out to be the keys hanging from the ignition, since then not a creak or groan. The car handles great if you have faith in the suspension it delivers in spades and it pulls like a train on the motorway. I have absolutely no reservations about recommending this car and it’s also nice to drive something out of the ordinary with some Italian flair. Don’t follow the crowd, turn a few heads and buy a Bravo Sport! I did and I love it :]

Otherwise fine, but will now sell before it goes wrong after reading all the reports. No service has been good from Fiat don’t buy one. As far as comfort goes, the Fiat Scudo has none. After a 3 hour journey your entire lower back and legs ache badly, both driver and passenger. The most comfortable area of the vehicle seemed to be plywood decking in the rear, the seats in the front are made from stone, which is possibly also the reason behind the lack of fuel economy. It seems a 2.0 litre petrol Audi has far better economy. When handling speed bumps at high speed in central London, the van performs nicely, the suspension taking the pain well. The only problem here was the lack of a partition between the driver and rear, though having said this we could avoid flying objects using the rear view mirror, which the rest of the time would look at the rear of the van having no windows!! Finally the cup holders seem capable of holding nothing more than a shot glass.

Mine runs a Spider Tuning Box at 156bhp (Dyno’d!) and I have to say that overall it has been just great with problems whatsoever until now! I’ve done a bit of web surfing lookong for an answer but it doesn’t seem to be a issue: I last used the van yesterday morning and all was okay; tonight there is -8 degrees of frost outside and I just tried to use it and the brakes don’t work at all. There is no resistance in the peddle which can be pushed to the floor. I can pump up pressure but afterwards the peddle goes back to no resistance. I checked to fluid resovior and the brake fluid level is as it should be so what’s happening?

In the first two years I owned the car it had several water leaks in to the vehicle (around the right back door and boot). Also had a problem with the master cylinder where it had to be replaced. Also had problems with view through rear window, massive blind spots and had major problems going over square speed bumps where the bottom of the car would ground out doing damage to the bottom of the car. Needless to say I no longer own the vehicle.

Got that fixed, then 3 months down the line the door handle broke, after paying 160 pounds for it to be fixed the steering fault light keeps coming on. I went to an independent garage and they said that the steering rack has broke. I am at my wits end with this car and I don’t feel safe driving it. I bought my car new in June 2006, drove over 1100 miles in first 10 days holidaying round north England and Scotland. Apart from Fiat recalls affecting steering and door, car absolutely fine until 2 weeks before 3 year warranty expired...then alternator failed, and driving a Grande without power steering is no joke! Fixed under warranty, and no further troubles until Dec 09/Jan 10 when worrying noises began through steering column. Booked into auto-electrician who diagnosed Power steering electrical unit (ECU) about to fail, as on numerous previous model Puntes. Garage claim mine to be the first Grande booked in with the old, old, fault (see web pages relating to Fiat Punte power steering failures... there are plenty!) Fiat replacement about £600, but motor factor unit (with same warranty as Fiat’s) is about £300 + fitting. I have now lost all faith in this car. 33000 essentially trouble free miles and yet Fiat have not corrected a fault going back YEARS !! In all other aspects I have been happy with the car, yet always suspected a 1.6 engine could and should have been an option. Consumption averages 41 overall, yet my 1.2 16v Punto previosly owned returned 50 /55 and was quicker. Got 27000 miles out of front tyres, and nothing else needs replacing.

I have had a 06 new shape Ducato from new. And have had nothing but bother with it as already mentioned; glove box is flimsy and was broken within a week, all the plastics on the van are prone to damage. Water pump went after less than 30,000 miles the sliding door has never worked or locked without pushing it with your shoulder despite being looked at three times. Now after only 40,000 miles the clutch slave cylinder has gone and it is inside the gearbox will cost me over £1,000 as Fiat say it isn’t covered by the final year drive only warranty. The van drives well apart from when in reverse and it judders like hell. My advice is do not buy a Fiat. Nearly forgot the spare tyre holder had to be cut to get the tyre out as it did not work - only six months old.

Will get another one when the lease is up later this year - it has been much more relible than the Transit and Combo I had before - FACT!

Had one for a year, when my g/f insisted we had to do camping. I put a towbar on it for a box trailer, and behold - the perfect pocket camper. It snowed that year, the plucky 1.2 engine and winter tyres made the car so much fun I went out rescuing Land Rovers with it. I loved that car. The downsides were being cut up in traffic as it was so small, and a lack of motorway speed. Fuel consumption was high with the car struggling to make 45mpg. Otherwise, brilliant. Later ones come with the much better diesel engine. Buy one if you can. They’re perfect for country types. Sliding rear seat option best.

So far so good. I have owned the Croma for 6 months now, I picked it due to it’s size / value for money / rarity. I have had a couple of problems, the boot door switch has stopped working and the RH indicator occassionally will not stay on plus there is a rattle from the front offside suspension - I haven’t investigated this yet. Overall I love the car, I get an average of 47 MPG with mixed motorway / urban driving, very comfortable and relaxed 6th gear cruising on the motorway, which is great for long journeys, the dealers ARE useless (nothing new there?), but what a pity this car is not still sold in the UK. I think people here do not realise that Fiat’s are great cars.

Have enjoyed 3 years trouble free running with this car. Tyres lasted 20K miles - driven without extra care. Averages 36mpg . No complaints; given good purchase deal and extremely comfortable relaxing progress. Unique style always impresses and stands out from the loads of common shapes on the road- sad to see poor UK support. My family are Spanish and in Spain this car is much better accepted with good reviews and dealer care.

Re: FIAT Ducato problems: Gerard Moyne, Northern Ireland Fiat Ducato 2008: I need people to contact me re: the difficulty with Fiat Ducato Motorhomes Vans! My 2008 4.5 tonne motorhome is shuddering in reverse gear and the clutch is burning when trying to reverse due to a problem known by Fiat to exist. I am looking at taking a class action re: this problem and need anyone who has a problem to contact me. moyne@gpsi.ie Reply: I bought a new French Hymer 574 - 2006 model, put on the road Jan. 2007 - nothing but problems! Investigation shows that our chassis left Italy for Hymer Germany autumn 2005, so it hung around until we bought the vehicle end of 2006. As to the Fiat Ducato chassis. I have the Iveco 2.8 engine - fine. Chassis: front wheel bearings failed, replaced in Paris free of charge last September, but took 3 days as the part numbers with ABS & without ABS are the same, but some bits that were required are different - the told me. Failure of Ducato front wheel bearings is a well know weakness. Reversing on a slope: bad clutch judder as the ratio is too high - a well know problem which I have and Fiat don’t want to know about. Fiat France tell me there is a ’short gearbox’ with a lower gear ratio that can be fitted at customer’s expense. HYMER should have not built a 3.5 vehicle on this chassis. Speedo was for the usual 16 inch wheels, but Hymer used a series of special chassis with 15 inch wheels (cheaper for them). Took a year for the complete speedo assembly to be replaced under guarantee by approved Fiat (Iveco) dealer here in France Hand break failed several times causing two accidents. Re-tensioning by Fiat dealers failed to overcome the problem. Explanation: this is caused when the rear break assembly is hot. When the hand brake is first fully applied to maximum, it works. BUT, as the mechanism cools, the breaks soon began contract, slowly relaxing the grip thus allowing the vehicle to move if on a slope. No remedy for this, block in first gear, I am told. As to the Hymer problems, too long to explain here, but we have had to resort to legal assistance to try to have outstanding faults repaired and still await parts to arrive from Germany. And as a journalist, in direct contact with the director of Hymer France, who I meet each year at the big exhibition in Le Bourget - Paris, I still can’t get anywhere! Basic problem is the motorhome constructors have had such a demand in recent years for their products, they just don’t care when their dealer has our money. Also, the Ducato van chassis is not designed to be permanently loaded to 3.5 ton, I am told. And under your UK regulations there is the C1 category of 3.5 ton un-laden, up to 7.5 ton maximum weight (which does not exist in France, but in Germany they drive 3.8 ton on a car licence). Many motorhomes are too heavy for the commercial van chassis they are frequently built on.

Nick, Norfolk on the Fiat Multipla

I’m on my third Multipla and into my 8th year of owning them, I just love ’em. Before getting picky about reliability (pretty damn good, actually) and quality of plastics, we have to be clear that we’re talking about a cheap car: £13,500 otr. Nothing else can touch it for that money and the resale values aren’t bad. 40mpg commuting is normal, the same cruising at 70 unladen. It is fun to drive, easy to live with and above all, immensely comfortable. The Germans give you a thinly covered wooden bench, the French pad their seats with hot marshmallow, hence the swift onset of back pain. All six seats in the Multipla are hugely comfortable for 6’, 16st me and there is room for children to grow into lanky teenagers without complaint - they save that for everything else in life you can think of. We load up with food, ipods and three children and head out across Europe without hesitation. One thing about safety, all seats are between the axles so you don’t have to have any children sitting in the crumple zone aft of the rear axle. As with most turbodiesels the acceleration whilst moving is splendid and perfectly adequate for normal driving. Dump your prejudices and just try one, you’ll be amazed. And comfortable.

I bought my Sedici used one year old. I love the looks and the fact it offers something different to endless Golfs, Vauxhall’s and Fords out there. To be honest, it does not have the chunky quality build as "proper" Fiats. Some of the other reviews are unfair to Fiat as the car is built by Suzuki at a Suzuki factory, so there is no point saying you wont consider another Fiat product because of problems with the Sedici build. I will keep mine for a while yet and get the most out of it. Somehow the noisy 1.6 engine seems to be getting better the more run in it is. I have also had no problems with the gear change.

Purchased new in Germany in January 2006; face lifted mark 2, LHD 4,500 kilo ALKO chassis, tag axle Hobby 725 motorhome with 146 bhp engine [uprated engine only available in lhd]. Drives superbly, pulls like a train, will cruise all day at 80mph, plenty of poke for overtaking. Fuel consumption 21 - 27 mpg. Mileage 35,000 kms (date now; 06/05/09); nothing has gone wrong/fallen off, nothing has been replaced (which is more than can be said for the motorhome conversion). For a surprisingly small 4 x 4, this cheeky little chappie has a lot of guts. I use it daily driving down a narrow, muddy Devon lane and it has got me out of a few, what could have been, nasty muddy predicaments. Recently, whilst moving some gravel up through three of our field in the back of the car, it out performed my husband’s Honda CRV, which couldn’t quite make it past the muddy entrance! On the downside, you have to think ahead of pulling out as the acceleration is not very good, as already mentioned: 0 - 60 in 20 seconds. Also, the fuel tank is quite small [30 litres]. However, that aside, it is a good robust performer, although it could do with a more powerful engine.

I purchased a Fiat Ducato 2.2 multijet 100bhp in March 2007, this vehicle was 6 months old and had been used as their demonstrator the mileage was 1130. I am on a 56 plate (new shape). Since i purchased this van i have had 3 new glove boxes because the catches kept on breaking and it would fall down whilst driving. I have had the air scoop on the bonnet replaced because when it rained the rain water would drip onto the engine because it was the one for the LHD model; i have had a new indicator stalk because of a fault with the indicators blowing fuses. I have had the electric door mirrors replaced. And to finalize in mid November 2007 on a Saturday morning on my way too London the engine management warning light came on. i tried to get it looked at whilst i was in London but i was told i would have to leave it with them for a week as they were too busy to look at it so i contacted fiat Exeter where i purchased the vehicle from. And limped home on reserve power and took the van in the next day, i was told the needed the van for 3 days as there was also 15 recalls on this model. The van is still at the dealership and i am driving around with a ford transit thrifty hire van. As fiat cannot get the parts needed to repair my van. It is now getting on to nearly 3 months. That is 3 months i have lost off the guarantee and the tax insurance i have been paying and 3 months of finance... has any one else had problems like these? The mileage is now at 18000.

We purchased 2 1.4 grand’s from Piccadilly in Knaresborough. This one has had its fair share of problems but the tailgate holding water fault has happened to both vehicles and gives me most concern. Our Dealer is one of the better ones though and all faults have been rectified to date. The thing about these cars is that you get a lot of car for a little money. Yes, you do seem to get niggling faults at first, I should know, we’ve had over 10 fiats but once sorted you get a great car!!!!!!

At first I was very satisfied with my choice and purchase of this great looking car, however if only the reliability matched this first impression. The car was recalled to fix a steering support (fair enough, these things happen). Then the dashboard came away from its fixings. That had to be replaced after the fix failed on the same day of collection. Now there is an electrical fault that tells you that the fluid temp is too high, this before you even pull away after standing overnight, again told it’s an easy fix just a software upgrade This too failed to remedy on the day of collection same old story, and now waiting for it to go in for further "investigation" COME ON FIAT WHAT’S GOING ON!! Hope this time they can actually solve something.

Where to start. If it worked it would be a great car. Unfortunately it doesn’t. I have had in under a year: EGR 3 ECU 6. The car completely rewired, 2 new boot releases, 1 new filler cap. A bizarre fault that meant that either the sensor on the electric windows or the engine management didn’t work. The stereo reception is so good I can pick up radio stations practically on the moon. Unfortunately this means that any iPod FM thing is useless due to interference. The Fiat mechanics are useless, as are the dealers, to be fair this is because this is a mix of Fiat/Saab and Vauxhall mechanics. When it works it’s a dream, shame the reliability is a nightmare.

I don’t regret buying the Grande Punto but part of me feels that I could have done better for the money. If I had the decision to make again I may opt for the Vauxhall Corsa or the VW Golf. It managed to pick one up new for a pretty good price and I have to admit that I was impressed with the style and interior design. The downside for me was the lack of space for passengers, poor suspension and the lack of engine power.

I bought a second hand Maxi June this year (July 2006 model) I intend converting it to a camper. The van performed well around Germany. Took it over the boarder to Austria, over the Alps. It climbed very well, kept cool in the heat, but coming down the Grossglockner after 3 Kms the front discs started smoking, I was in low gear letting the engine do the work and correcting the engine revs with slight use of brakes. It took 45 mins to allow the vehicle to cool, to safely drive on, I had to use the hand brake to correct the engine revs, driving in 2nd gear as slow as 20 kph. I stopped at the nearest garage to check out what I thought must be a fault on the front discs. All is correct, just badly overheated brakes. I have since had it in Fiat dealer to find out all the brakes need replaced on newly replaced front discs. The problem? Too small discs on the front for a 3.5 tonne van, every time we do this the whole brakes will need replaced they said 1000 euro. The wheels do not allow for the air to pass freely to the discs to cool and the disc area is to small for the size of the van. What a crazy way to build a van 150 BHP and no brake power to stop a full loaded van. In Germany the front disc is bigger since the van is allowed to travel faster. In a country with mountains, because there is a restriction in speed, the brakes in the front are smaller. What a crazy company, build a van to go up a mountain but not to come down. And what a safety feature, yes they get off with it. Do I hear any driving clubs complaining about the biggest used van in the camper trade can’t come down hills!!! So you folks with a Ducto campers stay away from mountains, unless you come down less than 20 KPH and a bit at a time.

Cruise control is great. Sun blinds on rear windows is handy when baby is in car. On the bad side - It seems to go through tyres by 10,000 miles, right front inner tyre wear seems strange. Bald front tyres at 15,000 miles - 65 mph = 3200 rpm - 70 mph = 3600 rpm = bad fuel economy - uses diesel like its going out of fashion. Side loading door rubber seal falls off every time I open the door. I can see daylight through back doors when they are shut. I could go on for ever, this is my second Fiat and it will be my last. I’ve had nothing but joy from this car. Don’t get me wrong, Fiats do have their faults, but this one Fiat appears to have got right. Being the 2.4 it has 200BHP, and was fast - in fact surprisingly fast considering it’s size and diesel engine (I also drive response Police vehicles so I’m not used to 1.1 Pandas ;)). I paid 249 to have it ’chipped’ which made a massive amount of difference. The car is astronomically fast and is great fun. A few times I’ve been past 140+mph. I have had a few issues with the sun dome roof which were sorted under warranty and with tracking, but all now, touch wood, appear to have been solved. The only reason I gave it 4 stars was the fact that the dealers are next to useless and they stopped selling the car in the UK. I am worried about support for it in the future but having a Saab and Vauxhall connection, hope this wont be too much of a problem. All in all a great car which I would highly recommend but only the 2.4 Prestigio, due to high equipment levels and superior performance.

Replaced:- electric window motor, part for horn, timing sensor, ignition key lock mechanism, part for heater, all within the first 10000 miles. Now the reverse gear has deveopled a problem and starts to burn when under any load such as going up hill. Huge gaps in cab doors, passenger always gets frozen. Great car to drive, spacious and a lovely drive. On the bad side - never had more than 33mpg out of it. It goes through tyres every 10,000 miles, eats break pads about the same every 10,000-11000 miles. Already had new disks all round. Lost count of the recalls on different things. I have been driving Fiats for 25 years, this is by far the most luxurious and the most expensive to run I have ever owned. Generally I have not a bad thing to say about Fiat but if this had been my first it would have been my last. The big question is how can a company with so much experience end up with a model so lousy. One would have thought with the mess they made of its namesake predecessor they would not let it happen again. PS: It’s currently in for a 40,000 mile (three year) service and needs new front disk pads again. For info my last vehicle a Stilo Abarth did 60,000 on the same disks and pads.

Bought the car new with employee discount, apart from 3 sets of rear tyres in 36K miles, 2 reprogrammes of the ECU, replacement of the EGR at 4K miles, new tailgate switch at 8K miles it is actually not a bad car, unfortunately with sales withdrawn and no advertising campaign when launched it is now worth nothing at trade in, unlike my last 2 multipla’s. The 150 multijet diesel is an excellent engine the only problem is the denial from Vauxhall Signum and saab93 owners that it is the same car and engine. Cruise control is essential to keep your licence and 45+mpg at cruising speeds! The only let down is the very poor fiat customer service and majority of the dealerships. I do not wish to have this car after it is 3 years old, the stress and worry would kill me which is a shame because it does everything I ask of it so well.

Would have had much better rating until last August, three weeks after warranty ran out. That’s when the water pump went damaging the cam belt. Both had to be replaced - which I was told was very unusual for age and mileage of car (I do about 16K per annum). So far this year I have replaced tyres due to faulty tracking and they’re still wearing unevenly, had to have rear door lock seen to (for second time) and one of sliding door catches... had to replace cat on exhaust (quoted literally twice as much for part by dealer than Kwik Fit), rear wiper motor sticking and advised I should replace (front one went after only two years though it wasn’t the motor that was at fault but a mechanical part, but you can’t get just that)... and now ,apparently, two weeks after full service (minus 70K cam belt replacement see above) and one day after passing MOT the EGR valve needs replacing or car won’t start from cold. AARGH. All this is approaching £1000 spent in just over a month. Other than that the car has done just what I want and is a lot of space for the initial price - but spares, blimey don’t they make up for it then... Very reliable for first 50K miles thereafter it’s been a bit of a nightmare. I would replace it, but maybe it’s one of those that needs replacing before the warranty runs out despite what you lose in near instant depreciation...

Four and a half years, nearly 40,000 miles, not a single fault, no rattles, great style, and endless fun. An object of undiminished family affection. The car has done everything that’s expected of it and nothing that hasn’t been. For the occasional large load, I’ve rented larger cars; these have of course been faster, but none, including a nearly new BMW 3-series diesel on an Italian holiday, has been so intelligently designed or such a pleasure, in all conditions, to drive; among other smaller cars, an Opel Corsa, also nearly new, on another European holiday this year, was a revealingly coarse contrast. (A recent recall for a permeable ABS control unit is a mild irritation, but FIAT is dealing with this efficiently and of course, no cost.)

I bought a brand new Fiat Doblo Cargo four years ago (05 plate). It’s a 1.9jtd (105 hp) and does about 50 mpg. It is very reliable, nice and comfortable to drive and quite fast which is great for busy roundabouts. I’m a plumber/gas fitter and a service agent for a couple of boiler manufacturers, which means the van does get a hell of a slamming too. The only thing I would say to watch out for is the gear stick. It is very short and can be troublesome to engage at times. The gearstick once completely snapped and I had to drive home with a mole grip attached to have it welded. Other than this I think the Doblo is a brilliant van and would recommend it to anyone.

All were reliable cheap to run and fun to drive, my present 1.9 JTD sporting is as solid as a rock economical and will give many similar more expensive cars a run for its money, It cost much less than many similar cars I paid 4000 for a 55 plate with 37000mls. I Bought mine brand new in 2005. Has now done 44k miles. Just bought a Transit to replace it as carrying 400-ish kilos in the Doblo has killed the shock stops and the leaf springs, so I need something bigger. Had to have new rear brake cylinders at 27k as they were leaking fluid (£450), and the gearstick weld snapped at 42k, but with builders banding and some roofing bolts I made it home and had it re-welded, other than that though, mechanically this van has been fine. Just the usual brake pads, discs, aux belts etc. If you service it regularly and to the letter, and don’t drive it like Schumacher, its a fine little van. Mine has never broken down, so it’s given me no down-time atall. But don’t bother trying to put the stated 500 kilos in it, it won’t like it, and it will quickly destroy the rear suspension. Also I find it goes through front tyres very quickly. The MPG figures of 62 etc are impossible to achieve. Mine averages about 42, which is still not bad at all, considering the weight it carries.

It’s fairly comfortable and roomy, does everything I ask of it and I think its a great car for the price. when I was looking for a car I test drove a SEAT at more money and there was no comparison in build quality, especially the interior. Even though I adored my Jag, my family will always come first..and second and etc. etc.. But what to replace it with? I trawled the Inernet and found several very favourable reviews from long-term users (they may even have been from this site) and started a search. To cut what is a long story short I found a 2004 Mk1 diesel with all the extras, for the same price as my 2001 Jag. I couldn’t have made a better choice. 4 years later I find that I cannot imagine what, if any car, I will ever replace this Multipla with. I even like the Mk1 looks. The Mk11 looks too much like that mini-Honda MPV... I have driven to the Spanish Algarve, twice, in her with 4 people and half the contents of my mate’s appartment and she never missed a beat. All my passengers love her, especially the kids, as the rear seats will recline to around 45 degrees, with the rear parcel shelf removed, and they can take a nap without getting a stiff neck unlike most somnambulant rear seat passengers. Those same rear seats easily remove and then you have a van!! This is surely the most versatile car ever built? The only problem is - what the H*ll do I replace it with? I have looked BTW and I am staggered to find that even after 4 years heavy usage I could sell her for not an awful lot less than what I paid for her. I couldn’t have said that about the Jag!!!! The new Peugot 5008 is a very poor attempt at copying the Multipla, imo.

My Stilo worked fantastically for 2 years and put on 80-odd k miles (41k to 118k) problem-free except for bits and pieces here and there (tyres, pads, odd bearing- only thing major was a new fuel pump). I never got all these airbag/engine warnings that some have suffered. Only things I hated were the front headlamps which are ludicrously hard to change bulbs. Also worth noting is that the back seatbelts struggle to go round some carry-cots/child seats. Otherwise a great drive, superb engine with decent economy (though certainly prefers a motorway run to town tedium, even a 10-mile jaunt on an open road improves it by 10mpg). However 3 weeks ago all of a sudden the car refused to go into reverse, either finding 4th instead or nothing at all. Then it would do it once, but not again for an hour. New cables were suggested and fitted- no change. Decided I need new car as cost of new box astronomical (and will that cure it? Can’t afford to p*** £1000 away). Hey presto first dealer I see says he had another Stilo part ex’ed to him the week before, on driving it away from auction it developed exactly the same fault! Another one I saw today says it’s been seen on lots of them, some with as little as 60k, and is basically incurable (something about the selection process getting fused/tangled IIRC). Such a pity cos it’s got a perfect engine capable of 200k. High-mileage Stilo owners beware- this could be you soon!

Oh dear, where do I start! From the moment of picking up my van I had trouble but I put the vast majority of the problems down to the dealer. Total incompetence. I know that anyone can buy a jinxed van but when the van is returned to the dealer five times and they still don’t cure ANY of the faults, then you really are stuck. I even tried rejecting the van which was my right- the law, unfortunately is an ass because I would have had to return the van then buy/hire another whilst fighting for my money back. I decided against it. You know what they say FIAT stands for: Fix It Again Tomorrow - but, in my experience, that isn’t true because they don’t fix it. I would advise anyone thinking of buying one not to.

I’ve owned my MutliWagon for almost a year now and in that time it has covered about 13,000 miles. As with almost all Fiats I have owned my car has it own electronic idiosyncrasies. The engine warning light has been flashing on and off randomly for the last 6 months. This is sometimes accompanied by the car going into limp mode for 5 minutes or so but otherwise causes no issues. My local Fiat dealer told to ignore it because ’they all do that....’ The car is rather average handling wise but as most of my mileage is done on the motorway this isn’t too problematic for me. Fuel economy around town isn’t great 32-35ish MPG but on a decent motorway run I’ve seen as much as 48 MPG which I feel is good for a car of this size. Do not under estimate the performance of these cars. Even in standard trim my estate is as quick as a colleagues MK3 Golf GTi. If funds allow I intend getting a remap - more power and fuel economy..... These cars are now available for almost no money. My advice, find one with good service history, buy it and run it into the ground. You won’t get more car for your money......

I bought my Fiat van 4 years ago, it had 5,000 miles on the clock; it now has 121,000. A brilliant van that I can personally recommend. I have had the cambelt done at 75,000 and an exhaust at 100,000, that’s all. I have had van serviced every 12,000 miles which is probably why it has been so good to me... O am still running my van but am considering a Fiorino in the next few months.

I bought this car 3 months ago when my Vauxhall Astra 1.6 was written off by vandals. I bought a 1.4 Stilo and loved it instantly. The engine was so quiet, good and comfortable to drive. Fuel consumption was great and the sound system is superb. Sadly my Stilo was written off in a crash (not my fault) but I am looking for another one. The car protected the 3 passengers also, well impressed, even after it rolled over the passengers and driver walked out with 2 small cuts between them. I have had, a Carlton, Calibra, Astra, Escort, Peugeot 406, and I loved the Stilo best. Recommended++++++++++.

Bought car new, done 33,400 miles, driven hard for a lot of that time, never had problem. I just change the cam cover gasket at every service. Have 30mm lowering springs (fitted after about 3 months) and wider tyres (fitted last year) on it. Handles great, a lot of fun on B-roads. Great car, did 46MPG with 4 adults and 4 days camping stuff crammed in to Orkney and back. On its second set of brake pads (only another 3000miles left on them though) but disks are still perfect.

First the pluses - good car to look at, big car feel, good MPG, goes like s**t of of a shovel. But the down side is the maintenance to replace a simple thing like the air filter is a nightmare - you have to take half the car to pieces - to replace the cam belt is at least 4 hours work and none of these jobs can be tackled by the faint hearted. They are designed to be difficult because they want you to take it along to your local unfriendly Fiat dealer and pay at least £72 per hour plus VAT. Fiat parts are expensive. It’s a good car until things go wrong.

I must say that I’ve been traumatised for want of a better word since I purchased this car. Wish I’d kept my Daewoo which I had from new for last 10yrs. On the same day I collected the car it ended up in a garage because messages were flashing up on the screen saying ASR failure, alernator failure, loose connection with a spanner icon. Garage had it for 4 days and said that they couldn’t find any faults with it and that it was running ok. Collected the car it drove ok from the garage was beginning to enjoy it then whilst driving, car cuts out again and same messages flashing up again! Will need to take it back to the garage to see if they can resolve the problem. Failing that i’ll need to trade it in for a different model. Not impressed with Fiat and would never have another one. Could someone please tell me what the problem is as it is really worrying me.

Nice car, design-wise it is 5 years ahead. JTD 80 is probably way worse option that JTD 115. Although mpg is fine and it is good around the city as it has got shorter gear ratio. If you are often on the motorway than you should look for JTD 115 or better. Mine has got 116K on the clock and was fairly reliable. Car suspension and handling is a bit of a disappointment for me. It holds the grip eventually but doesn’t feel safe on hard brakes or corners. Older Fiat Brava did a much better job. It is a sound car mechanically; it would get 5 stars from me, but when it comes to electronics again, doesn’t feel as solid as some competitors, I would give it 4 stars. Flashing warning lights on dash just for fun could be annoying. The interior is dominated by a beautifully designed dashboard with good materials and ergonomics, the rest of interior feels like from another much cheaper car. Almost everything is squeaking and rattling sometimes more sometimes less, but always.

Bad sides are noise on motorway and brakes, when you break hard it feels unstable. Superb car.

Never missed a beat, all it’s had in 50k is two sets of front tyres (still on original rear Michelins 5mm) one set of front pads, exhaust repair and thats it. Had it now for 7 years (53 plate). Been serviced but only minor eg. oil/air filter etc . Still on original battery, bulbs the lot. OK it’s not fast but it pulls and returns 35-40 mpg or 50+ on a run. I like a new van like the next guy but this is a friend and I can’t bring myself to part with her. I will hold on to this van as I know getting such a reliable bullet proof motor that will do 500k with ease (taxi drivers) will be hard to come by. This engine is going to be legendary and it’s only emissions that killed it off.

French car number 2! Bought both as used examples for very little money & both have been reliable & great fun to drive, even if the diesel is a little unrefined. They are superbly designed for kids. For example children can see out of the low windows so they don’t get bored and sick and you can stand inside to strap them in rather than having to lean across an open door. You have a choice when you have children, either buy a Sharan or Zafira & admit your life has ended until they leave home or buy a Multipla & say s*d it, I am going to have some fun with them! As my Grandma would have said, it has Chutzpa.

I have read loads of reviews about the Fiat Punto 2002, and infact about all cars. Complaints here and complaints there. Its sad to see that car owners attribute errors to the car type. All cars break down, and the cheaper the car the more they break down. My Punto for example, has had 3 new exhausts pipes, 2 clutches, new hand break cable, a new sensor, because it wouldn’t start when it was warm and other small wear and tear stuff. The AA man has helped me start the car because of the above faults, 4 or 5 times. It doesn’t matter, the car has done 101000 miles and when it drives it is a great car to drive. Ok so the endless amounts of squeaks and noises, may become annoying, but I love the car’s handling, response time and overal driveability. There is not a lot of roll in the car, but the suspension is soft, makeing it a very comfortable ride. The MPG I can get the Punto to 55MPG, but average about 40MPG in the City. I was unlucky to have the number of faults that I had, but it doesn’t matter. I am a big fan of the Punto, and enjoyed driving the car, and I think people should stop complaining about how poor a model of car is, when it is really only a select few cars (of any make) that go wrong. I would buy a punto again quite happily. And I would probably encounter different problems, because its a different car, and not because its a Punto.

I bought my 2002 Fiat Ducaton 14 Long Wheel Base/High Roof from a private seller in Belfast in 2009. It is the 2.8D non-turbo version. It has a mileage of less than 70,000 and had two previous owners. I converted it to a camper for which it is really suitable. I managed to squeeze a shower/toilet, fridge; couch which folds into a double bed, cooker etc and lots of overhead storage. I removed the bulkhead panel between the cab and interior and installed two swivel seats. One of the great things about the Ducato is that it is widely used for this purpose and parts are easily obtainable. The engine is strong but slow. I took it to Cornwall last year and the long hauls on the hills there were a nightmare. Given a second chance I’d insist on a turbo diesel version. The Ducato drives easily, gear changes are smooth and steering very comfortable by virtue of the large steering wheel. Being a car driver I had no problem manouvring the Ducato in any car park I encountered with the extra length never being an issue. The big door mirrors give an excellent view and reversing is easy. I’ve read of complaints of "juddering" when reversing up an incline but to be honest I’ve not experienced any of this. There is a small stain of water appearing in the passenger footwell but without taking off the dashboard I can’t ascertain whether its rainwater or a leak somewhere in the heater matrix assembly. It is small an irritating but the water level in the system seems to be unaffected. The van is basic having no electric windows, cruise control, air conditioning but to be honest it gives less to worry about malfunctioning particularly in an old van. A frined of mine recently replace the electric window switch on her Toyota Avensis at a cost in excess of ?300! God bless the simple window winders in the Ducato, 8 years old and still working. The body work still holds it’s own in that the only signs of rust (and only surface rust at that) are on the underside of the steel crossmembers under the van, due I imagine to the salting of the roads of Northern Ireland due to their colder climate than here in the "deep south" of Wexford in the Sunny South East. In conclusion have a good look before you buy but be confident that the Fiat Dealerships in Ireland are very helpful, even to DIY mechanics :)

Now on 120K had 3 new alternators, 1 radiator, 1 engine, 2 starter motors and broke down a few times with the crankshaft sensor fault. Electric drivers window wont work now, the big glass area seems to big for the motor to move, need a bit of hand assistance. I have now had this car for over 5years and has not let me down out on the road. Its main foible is brake pipes, everything else has been just wear over the years e.g. exhaust 3 years, tyres only had to renew one due to wear after 33000miles but it was on the car when I bought it with 14000miles on the clock. Others have been replaced due to punctures but as the other tyre was part worn I replaced it at the same time at around £26.00. All in all it has been worth it mpg is not brilliant but on a run at 70-75mph it gives around 46mpg and running around 34mpg. My wife also has one that is 6 months younger; she had to have new front shocks at 2 years and 11 months so it was done under warranty.

Much underrated/overlooked family saloon, better looking/more fun to drive than most of this type - especially with the smooth 5 cylinder engine, with enough poke to put hot hatches in their place. Due to it’s power/weight, I was expecting low 20’s MPG when I bought it, but get between 27-35MPG and no failures in 20 months/16,000 miles so far. Insurance could be a killer if you’re under 25 and road tax could rocket in future years unless you choose version/year carefully, but a great, solid-feeling motor all the same. Makes paying £7K+ for a used A4/3 series seem daft, unless you really believe in all that ’better dashboard plastics’ b*llsh*te of the car mags.

HATE this car! My mother brought this car in 2001, by the time I past my test I decided to buy the car off my mum and have it as my own. Even though it lasted 7 years on the 8th year, everything started going wrong. The first problem was my gasket; the engine coolant light came on and it kept revving up. After this was the battery, which was then replaced. Following this was my HT leads, as every time i would get in the car, it wouldn’t start up properly. From this the starting motor went, this also had to be replaced. From that my car slowed right down when i was driving it & cut out, this was due to the timing belt, which had only recently been replaced when they did the gasket. Thinking that things were ok with it by now, my headlights started to dim even more! Then surprise surprise the car wouldn’t start again. took it to the garage, which seemed like the hundredth time were i was told that it was the alternator. replaced that! (also the battery AGAIN, as apparently it was scrambled by the volts) All was well for a month then then my car broke again!! Gasket again! Thinking that everything would be fixed, I decided to drive on the motorway (started not driving as much as was scared that the car would brake & i’d have to phone the RAC one again!) the engine coolant light turned red (which is normally when the gasket is on it’s way out) it then made a funny sort of creaking noise coming from under the bonnet while smoking wildly as I was driving. I then had to pull over on the motorway! Later, i found out that the engine needed replacing!! This was enough & i sold the car without an engine. After all the money, time & energy I have wasted with this car i would never encourage anyone to buy one! If you do, I’d advise you to get RAC breakdown cover as they come in REALLY handy!!!

Can honestly say this is the best car I have ever owned. In the old days when I had money I have owned a Jaguar XJ8 and XKR (Supercharged), BMW’s etc etc... NONE of which have given me as much pound for pound enjoyment as my Marea. Have done the brakes and suspension drop links since I have owned it (three years so far), also had the cambelt done at 65K. The cambelt was quite expensive at £300, but I now have a no worry, cheap to maintain and reliable car that has that the priceless ability to make you smile. I look forward to every journey. Not quite Ford Focus (had an ST170) handling, but competant, comfortable and solid on the road. The 155 especially is a true wolf in sheep’s clothing. Fuel consumption is 28-34 MPG, so its no eco-chariot. But all in all a brilliant car. The 2.4 diesel must be awsome!!

I bought this wonderful car from new. I have had problems with the head gasket [as per other people] but I have been absolutely enthralled by its style [which still puts more modern cars in the shade] and its performance. It seems to have a restrictor that curtails rapid acceleration up to 105mph but its real character shows when you drop down to third from forth, the car just flies! Unlike some, I find the extra width of tyre on road gives the driver the feeling of sticking to the road. There is very little roll and it’s an absolute pleasure to corner in this very safe-to-drive and value-for-money superstar. I make any excuse to drive the thing - Fiat got the design really sorted with galvanised bodywork that doesn’t have a hint of rust after eight years! I’m keeping mine as I’m sure it will be a "classic" in years to come. Economy - even though it’s a 1.2 multi-point ’injection’ carb., I get fifty to the gallon on a run, wow! It’s all true...............

Blue with black leather and Aircon. Used as an everyday car its a bit small, boot will only take 2 sports bags and not child friendly. We have 2 cars as herself is a sales rep and takes a warehouse on the road in the Passat diesel. Having said that it€™s amazing the number of sales calls that ’require’ a smart lady rep in a dinky drop top. Don’t even mention the joys of topless motoring... No problems so far with reliability apart from having the roof slashed when parked which wasn’t the car’s fault. Fiat however made a full opera about replacing the roof and apparently hired Sydney Opera House to fit the replacement in.... Adequate performance from the 1747 4 pot motor. 130Hp and 0-100 kmh in 9 seconds so it won’t win any races. Handling is very good and will out turn much faster cars. Good buy. The early (pre 2003) version actually have a higher spec than the later ones which were heavily discounted by Fiat after the independent builder maker (Maggiora) went bust... later ones don’t Aircon or the higher trim spec of the originals.

It is my first car and it is the perfect car to start with. The only thing is the wiper speed but I am getting used to it.

I’ve had my Seicento for 10 months and have been throught 3 clutch cables in that time. Due to poor design, cables snapping are a common fault and that said i’m cutting my losses and selling it.

I am reasonably happy with my Ducato, it is after all ten years old. I was surprised to find that it is not wax injected on production. I wish to comment on Rich Davenport’s problem ie. the discharging vehicle battery. I had a similar fault which turned out to be the split charge unit. One of the relay contacts had stuck leaving the lesure battery permanently connected across the vehicle battery. This had resulted in the lesure batteries fuse blowing when I started the van and the vehicle battery being connected to the habitation 12 volt system whilst the lesure battery was disconnected by the blown fuse. Hence the vehicle battery was feeding the various devices that I leave on when I park up the van and loosing it’s charge. Hope this helps, Ian Barker.

The best car I’ve ever bought. It is reliable and cheap to maintain, have had it for over 8 years.

Robert, Sussex on the Fiat Seicento

 star rating

The Fiat (which stands for Fix It Again Tomorrow) Seicento is one of the worst cars you can buy. The safety rating is diabolical and the worst of any car ever made since the testing scheme was introduced. Secondly, when I had my Seicento I had it for less than 12 months and it broke down 8 times. So, in conclusion, the Seicento is not only the most dangerous car around but it is also one of the most unreliable.

I have a problem with my 1996 Ducato. The engine cuts out when the indicator is switched on or the headlamps are flashed. It is a very intermitent fault. Has this happened to anyone else?

I bought my campervan in June 2009. It’s petrol but nicer to drive than a deisel. I’ve been all over the place in it and think it’s great. I bought it from Highbridge, near Brean; two brothers have a small garage with abought 12 on the front. They told me people are getting trouble with the new Fiat Ducato’s but the older ones seem better.

I can’t go out at night anymore because of the crappy lights, I can’t see a thing. Are puntos made with dim lights or something? I even bought bright bulbs and it seems the actual lights don’t let any light through, its so dangerous. I have a 95. Also it keeps overheatin and making strange noises but think it’s because it’s getting old. Does anyone else have a problem with night driving?

We had a head on crash with the back of a lorry in ours - not at fast speed 20/30mph and the car crumpled like paper. There seemed to be no safety in it whatsoever. Luckily the children were unharmed in the back, but the front of the car just gave way and the lorry demolished the front of the car where I was sat. Lucky to be alive - no thanks to the lightweight Punto.

Liam, Hampshire on the Fiat Punto

 star rating

Car of the year in 1995, the Fiat Punto lives up to its recognition even now. With the 1.1 fuel injected engine ticking over with all the tightness of a car half its age. The car being Italian it is obviously not well built and were I to crash it I would be almost definitely dead within a second but you still can’t look past the sheer vitality and energetic nature of this all time great. As well as good looks the car has monumental speed still at its old age, with the engine managing 110mph even now. This car will one day be a classic and I know now that I love it to bits.

Having 4 kids needed something with a bit of room as we travel a lot. Found ours on ebay and what a bargain. Smooth to drive, very comfy and cavernous when all the rear seats are removed (great for car boot sales). The only downside; which is a common fault with these vehicles is that the door locks sometimes have a mind of their own.

Giuseppe, Mid-Lothian (Edinburghshire) on the Fiat Bravo

Great car. Smooth ride and handling. I had a Stilo before but the Bravo is quite an improvement under all points of view. True about the back window, but that is part of the car style.

Sue, England on the Fiat Scudo Window Van

We run an outdoors company, went out shopping for a Torneo and came home with the Scudo. Larger boot space, more headroom, we have hired every minibus on the market and this beats them all!! Very fuel efficient, holds road like a car, no problems, done 50k trouble free miles, only just replaced the original tyres, brakes still 50% at last service. Would buy another compared to any other on the market of this size.

Phil, Bedfordshire on the Fiat Ducato

Good van to drive but like a lot of others has EGR valve problems & it is a nightmare getting Fiat to fix it. Has any one else noticed the spot welds cracking & breaking free on the lower rear door hinge stiffening plates? Open the doors & look- my right hand one has bust & fiat just don’t want to know. My mates Maxi is starting to get the same on 08 plate (mines 07). Be interested to hear of any more.

Having heard of previous build quality issues I approached the prospect of Fiat Punto ownership with a little trepedation I must admit! I have however been pleasantly surprised, a spirited engine, excellent interior space and touch wood nothing going wrong so far, have made buying the Punto a decision I haven't yet come to regret.

Pat, Cambridgeshire on the Fiat Punto

Great car, reliable, versatile. I learnt to drive in it. No troubles with it. Rides high so although it is a small car you don't feel you are about to get crushed when in traffic!

Only had this car for four months and already it’s had a problem with the door handles, though this was sorted out very quickly. Lovely to drive, just hope I don’t have any more problems as this has taken the excitement out of my very first new car a bit.

John, Buckinghamshire on the Fiat Doblo

06 plate dobbin now 19 months old. I have to say that this is a fantastic car. Being on the large side, I have always found problems getting into and driving cars - the smaller cars seem to have more room for the driver! but they are no good for the family. Plenty of room for five adults to sit comfortably (all above average height/weight) (one guy has a range rover said he had more room in the doblo!) Been away a few times. Two big teenage lads in the back plus a labrador, a boot jam packed with cases, tents, food. Three bikes on the back & the 1.9jtd could still shift on the motorway. Fuel economy is hit and miss. Supermarket fuel delivers 400 miles to the tank around town and similar on a run - usually foot down on the motorway though. Branded fuel has given me 40 - 50 miles more around town. I generally let the tank run down until the light comes on & that usually takes 10 gallons to fill. (book says the tank is larger so I reckon the light comes on too soon - not necessarily a bad thing) It is possible to get more out of a tankful but the 1.9 turbo diesel engine has so much poke it's difficult holding back when the boy racers sit beside you at the lights. Official figures give a 0 - 60 in terms of days but I've left many a car standing - which also explains the poor fuel economy. This is the first car I have been able to drive without having the seat reclined - there is masses of headroom AND I can step into the driver's seat (rather than trying to shoehorn myself in). The only downside for me is the plastic trim around/under the gearstick digs into my leg - but that is really down to my size & not bad design (I'd have had the gear lever coming out of the dash!). In my opinion, this car beats all the other MPVs hands down - similar in length and width to the sharan, zafira etc but with loads more interior room due to the lack of padded trim (ok, it's cheapo trim), but there is also loads more height. In my opinion, this car beats all the other MPVs hands down - similar in length and width to the sharan, zafira etc but with loads more interior room due to the lack of padded trim (ok, it's cheapo trim), but there is also loads more height. These have been around 6 or 7 years now & I know one owner who has gone beyond the 1/4 million miles mark in a 3 year old & still going strong. These babys are thashed as taxis as well as commercials and they just keep on going. Only downside so far is the rear light clusters can be awkward to remove - if you aren't careful, you lose one of the nuts into the bodywork, and some work under the engine can be awkward according to other owners but otherwise, you can't go wrong.

Jonathan, Durham on the Fiat Stilo Multiwagon

I’ve had this car for 18 months and overall I’m pleased with it’s performance and the fuel effeciency is excellent over long distances. The big let down on this car is the cheap looking plastic trim and you can get some roll on cornering but I think on the whole it does what it’s supposed to and it does it well.

We have a Fiat Punto Grande Active on our vehicle fleet! Didn’t know what to expect however I am happy to say that it has been a great work horse! Plenty of boot space, great engine, goes well for a 1.2 injection. For further details on specification go to the Manufacturers Website. By far one of the best looking small hatch’s in its category. Cheap running costs and the Insurance is only a group 2, Ideal for younger drivers. You get a great car for the money, working for Acorn I can confirm Contract Hire prices range from circa 110 pounds per month and most Dealers will offer a good purchase price with or with out a part exchange!

We have a problem with the door handle too which is about to be fixed. has anyone a problem with the ignition lock because we have this now too As mentioned before this has also taken the excitement out of having a new as we have also had two recalls and our dealer is rubbish too extremely unhelpful.

Thea, Norfolk on the Fiat Sedici

I wanted a 4x4 but not a great big hulking thing so the Sedici is absolutely perfect for me and is genuinely a good off roader. The interior is simple but comfortable and my son and dog love travelling in it. The price was excellent too. The one compromise I’ve had to make for all of this is the engine noise, bit louder than I’d like to be honest but it’s not deafening and you do get used to it.

Its bloody terrible, I expected to get a half decent run about from my employer, not this bucket. I can’t wait to leave here and get a better motor.

David, Rutland on the Fiat Ulysse

Have had this car from new and almost 3 years on I am still very pleased with it. It’s a very flexible MPV and although you know you’re driving a larger vehicle it handles very nicely indeed. I would definately recommend this, my only regret is that I didn’t plump for the electric side doors, can be a bit of a pain when you’ve got your hands full with the kids.

Aaron, Lancashire on the Fiat Punto

I have owned my Punto for 4 years and has been reliable throughout. I have had some problems in the last 6 months which is just normal wear and tear stuff that is expected with any vehicle at 4 years old and not had a lot of service history (oops). All in all it has been great and would consider getting the new punto as fiat have improved on looks and functionality recently.

Bought the car in July 07 from evans Halshaw (Fiat) Leeds. (06 model) very happy with the car (van!) not so happy with the garage! I have had a problem with the clutch since day one! I have been told by a garage (not fiat) that this engine had a recall problem with the clutch (judering when starting off!) but it was repaired under warranty by Fiat, has anyone any knowledge about this? I would be very grateful for any feed back as the Fiat garage are quoting me £700 for a new clutch!!! (other garage £200!!!) I am starting legal action against the garage as the fault was present from the day I bought the car. If you can offer any help / information call Jim Hassett on 07900322321, or e-mail at alan.hassett@ntlworld.com thanks. 5 seater car..
