Wonderful car! There are criticisms: Too many electrical gizmos and power sinks, so the battery is frequently low. Warning appears "Start Engine". I Hope all will be well in Winter. Driver’s left leg rests against the gearbox cover, which is plastic. This gets cold when driving, and is uncomfortable. Drivers door pocket in similar "plastic", so gets dirty when using foot to open/keep open the door. The P38 RR had carpet in both areas, and there was no problem. (Incidently my P38 has 135000 miles on clock, and still looks good and performs well) The rear air conditioning louvre is very noisy, and needs to be shut off when driving. I often drive on private roads, but seat belt warning every 5 seconds is really annoying. HOWEVER, all is forgiven by the superb power train. Quiet and very fast, I find it necessary to set a speed limit warning, as one soon reaches 90 without realising it when overtaking. It eats BMWs, Mercedes’, Audis, and I have yet to be passed by a faster car. I have yet to drive "off road" - I have kept my P38 for that! Fuel consumption is unbelievable for a 3 ton car. Pottering around Argyll gets 27mpg, some 6mpg better than the P38, but when you give it the gun, this drops to about 20 mpg. I have never had consumption this good in 50 years driving! Because of this staggering performance "available on demand", I find there is no need to rush, and journeys are faster AND more comfortable. Fewer complaints from Front Seat Passenger! The SatNav is superb, I have never used one before. I can honestly say that it is the best car I have ever driven, and would not change it for ANY other. I only wish I could take it to the big Motorway in the sky when the time comes! I think this car will see me out.

WOW! The Range Rover Evoque Coupe really is every bit as good as the media hype that it receives! I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to drive the Evoque at the "Range Rover Evoque Unleashed" event in Manchester. The car is superb. Really easy to drive. Fabulous design, very comfortable, responsive, classy with the excellent build quality that you would expect from Range Rover. The car really does handle like a Golf GTI on the road, but is equally as capable off road on the obstacle course! The Dynamic model is packed with fun gadgets and all the latest technology. The park assist is brilliant! No need to drive around looking for a parking space any more. The Evoque will recognise if it will fit into a space and literally park the car for you! Quite an odd feeling! Space in the back is good and the panoramic roof really makes the cabin feel a whole lot bigger than it actually is. Boot space is good, but I’m sure a lot of buyers won’t be too concerned about that!

I have previously owned both a mk1 then a 2007 Freelander mk2, which were as different as chalk and cheese. The mk2 is a fantastic, trouble free and a brilliant drive. I’ve now changed for 2011 model. Well done Landrover!

Having driven and travelled in many variants of RR, they are definitely very posey. However, reliability is questionable and on road, they’re great in a straight line. For on road, use an exec Jag, Merc, Lexus etc - a better drive.

This car is excellent, well built, stunning, BUT!!!.. My Partner has a 2 month old Evoque a 2.2 Dynamic diesel auto. On Saturday 11th Feb at 7.30am it was -14 Degrees Celcius in Northampton. It started, but went about a mile before it shuddered to a stop, and then went into "safe"/restricted performance setting, and kept shuddering to a complete stop when trying to re-start. Range Rover assist (needs help with "customer Service") had no technician available until 5.00pm, and they don’t just "recover" a car until a technician has seen it. After much argueing, they agreed to send out AA truck from Aylesbury 1.50hours away to get recovered to the dealer. Meanwhile, my partner called the local dealer to where it is being sent (Hartwell, Northampton), where one of the sales guys, has had exactly the same thing happen to him on his way into work with his diesel Evoque. Then, we contacted a friend who has the same model having had his since December and his too had broken down in exactly the same way. After then talking to the dealer where my partner got his car from, they confirmed they also had 9 cars that at this time were having the same issue. Another friend, who has a friend who is a RR dealer up near Grimsby, has had the same problem with severel cars.. It seems that diesel is waxing in the fuel filter, and stopping the cars NOT a good thing for such a Range Rover marque. I guess RR headquaters will be having a big meeting today...

Having owned this vehicle for 10 months (6,500 miles) it is long enough to present some balanced feedback and as an ex Land Rover mechanic (25 years OUT of the trade) and ex- owner of some early LR models I hope I understand what is good and bad in a 4DW motor vehicle. A great vehicle in many, many ways but in the first 3 weeks of ownership I told the dealer and Land Rover I was close to rejecting the vehicle as it went into safe mode twice in a week and would not rev over 2,000 rpm. I consider this was very likely brought about by the fitting of a Land Rover tow bar kit by the supplying dealer a week after delivery (modern tow bar electrics have to be matched into the computer) and at over £500 for the LR kit (fitted) this not only should not happen but it is also a complete rip off price. Otherwise the vehicle has been fault free so far. Round town type journeys give a fuel return of up to 35mpg which is very acceptable for a vehicle of this weight driving all 4 wheels and on longer journeys keeping around 70 the mpg hits around 40mpg when loaded. Not long after delivery I asked LR about supplying up-rated headlight bulbs as the standard bulbs throw only average light, LR dealers though cannot or will not supply them but they are available through the internet. The down side of general ownership of any Freelander I feel is it is far too expensive to service at a LR dealership, a first service price quoted to me for what is no more than a oil and filter change and a kick of the tyres was £386 and within 2 minutes of pushing on that price this dropped to £275 and as in law you can keep a full warranty if you use a VAT registered local garage using genuine factory sourced parts you can guess where may Landy is going. Our Freelander is not used as a Chelsea tractor and goes with us to the local allotments full of gardening gear and Yorkshire Moors/Dales when we go hiking, but I have decked out the load area with a home made removable covering. As it is a manual version and does not have a low ratio gearbox I have reservations about how aggressive I can be as 1st gear is just not low enough to climb steep, loose boulder strewn, broken tracks. That is were an auto version should score better, as then there are no worries about having to slip the clutch or go that fast you risk grounding and damaging the underside of what is not a cheap vehicle. In last winters snow (in the snow setting) it performed very well while my wife’s car sat for 2 weeks in the drive unable to travel anywhere. So in summary: A great vehicle when compared to the Land Rovers and even Range Rovers of old and on the motorway it is quieter up to 70 mph than my wife’s BMW due to the BMW run flat tyre system and the Landy gets you there just as quick. One other final comment, why on earth would you not want a spare wheel and why is it an optional extra?

It all started when I was a student working on a Shropshire estate, struggling to subsist and dreaming of fame and fortune, which never came. The Colonel did the rounds in a spanking new Range Rover (The first of the breed back then) and I reassured myself that one day I too would have such a vehicle. Not for me the temperamental supercars that would only run on a billiard table. I regularly borrowed the gamekeepers old Land-Rover and knew that these vehicles were the key to REAL adventures as I explored nearly every track across the wild expanse of the Long Mynd. It was to be many years before these wonders of the motoring world came my way again - and each time there has been that same old magic - but never more so than with the latest Disco.4 It has all the ’club class’ comforts that the armchair adventurer could aspire to, with the added bonus of ’go anywhere’ versatility. It’s as comfy as a lounge - but there’s no lounging about when it comes to its ’get up and go’ capabilities. The supplest hides cover capacious seats - but this is no hide-bound hybrid. It’s a thoroughbred of long standing with every conceivable bump and wrinkle ironed out to guarantee magic carpet transportation for the modern age. A short acquaintance is enough to convince most aspirational and potential owners that it doesn’t come much better than this. A modern icon of many years standing, the new variant manages to combine the best of all that has gone before with the best of all that is cutting edge today. Try as they might, its competitors simply can’t match its solid sense of poise, purpose and Olde English luxury. Capable, if need be, of traversing the Steppes of Asia or the Sahara Desert, it reserves its best discoveries for the lucky owners who will never cease to be amazed at the cornucopia of delights that the designers have packed into this eminently practical status enhancing machine that will sit five in the lap of luxury, with loads of space to stretch out. On the test car I enjoyed heated power operated seats, a heated steering wheel, a ’park heating system with remote’ so that the inside was toasty warm when I climbed aboard, an all-round camera system so that I didn’t bump the £50,000 (or thereabouts depending on your option choices) HSE top of the range beauty, a Symphony Hall sound system and even a television - but one can’t help feeling that it’s always the Discovery that is the star of the show. With huge power and great tranquillity it puts an extraordinary ability into the hands of the driver - be it on or off-road. Restyled at the front the revised model is yet more imposing. The real changes though have taken place under the skin. The latest model is quantifiably a better car than the old 2.7 version. Now with 3.0 litres of turbocharged and intercooled V6 diesel producing 241bhp, performance has increased dramatically and in line with this, bigger and better brakes reassure you. It’s now as quick in everyday use as most saloons, with a top speed of 112mph and a new ability to overtake like a charging rhino - thanks to massive torque from virtually tickover revs. Combine this with the uprated six speed gearbox with its silky smooth changes and you can despatch dawdling traffic effortlessly. The only problem being that you will frighten the vicar’s wife in her Nissan Micra into thinking that Armageddon has arrived as a 2,500 Kilo projectile shoots past so quickly. ’Yes, but it’s surely a fuel gobbling monster’ I hear you say. Well, I’m pleased to report that I got well over 30mpg overall - which was actually better than that of a new Fiesta automatic tested recently! Chassis engineers have been at work too. Unbelievably for a vehicle of such size and stature the Disco is beautifully fluid in its responses, yet imperturbable in its control. The new variable-ratio steering is a lot more precise when you’re hustling along. It simply annihilates the sort of road that would test a skilled driver - and it is done with such wonderful ride comfort. Off-road it’s so good that even the most cynical motoring journalist colleagues go weak at the knees and slack jawed at the awesome ability. Switchable systems for snow and ice, sand and anything else give it an ability that could only be equalled by Chris Bonnington in crampons. A giant in the annals of the history of motoring, Land Rover’s Discovery presents a convincing argument that one has tried them all - but settled for the best.

A great new improved landy. Heated and leather seats too, electric windows, tinted windows, fully loaded! Ok, the rear seats when unfolded has minium leg and head room, but I do have a dog guard fitted too which doesn’t help. Cubby box is very useful for cd’s etc... The stereo is pants, so that was changed to get rid of the tinny sound. The gear box is lovely, the power is awesome, and the ride is lovely for a defender! One fault at the miniute and that is the double jet washer snapped in the cold. To replace, the dashboard needed to come away to get to the small washer to change the part!!!! Why??????

I bought my discovery with 14k miles on the clock, it has been fraught with problems ever since. I changed my 2006 Terrano, what a mistake it was trouble free from new. Anyone considering buying a Discovery, no matter how cheap please don’t do it.

I recently bought a Discovery 4 SE and sold my Merc Benz ML320. This is the best 4x4 I have owned (Prado, pajero, Landcruiser100, had them all.) The only thing I don’t get the consumption advertised. I get 12L/100 combined, but then who wants to drive at 120 KMPH? Well done Landrover, off-road is amazing. Colin, South Africa

I now have an XS Commercial Discovery 4 with premium sat-nav etc and bluetooth. The only gripes I have with it are the fuel economy (32mpg) and the fact that the dashboard dials light up before the headlamps come on. Other than this it is absolutely brilliant and a vast improvement on the D3.

WOW! What a car! This is by far the best car I have ever owned: super-fast, smooth and with all the recent snow we have just had it was a doddle going through some very deep snow here in North Yorkshire. Heavy on fuel but as a package on the whole it’s unbeatable. RR claim 19 to the gallon but it’s more like 16 other than that 10/10, the engine is joy to listen to.

I had a fantastic Discovery 3 but a change of caravan meant I did not need such a large tug, so went to my local dealer, he gave what I paid for the Discovery a year ago and I bought a Freelander 2 gs auto 2009 ex demonstrator, with 4500 on the clock and full landrover warranty. What a brilliant car, it is lively, very economical and handles brilliantly. My wife and I took up the dealer offer of a half day Landrover experience to see what it could do, (we had one with the Discovery and were amazed ). We wanted to see how close it could come off road, well apart from 2 very extreme sections where you needed adjustable suspension and low ratio, the FL 2 was terrific, up and downsteep slushy/muddy slopes, thick snow it gave complete confidence,it went places the opposition can only dream about. Well done Land Rover still top in all the classes.

We use our Land Rover for the dive club and sometimes you have got to see what this thing carries and tows. We can fit 5 people in, 5 sets of cold water dive gear, 10 scuba tanks, 5 sets of weights, and then behind we tow a 22 foot RIB, usually with 200 litres of petrol on board, and it doesnt miss a beat. Genuinely, there is nothing like it.

Best 4x4 I have ever driven. What one has to understand is it’s a car with prestige and when you own one you should not be afraid to spend money on servicing through actual Land Rover Garages. I had first bad issue with a local garage. Now I have fitted LPG it makes a hell of a difference about 25mpg.

Excellent ride and comfort. I have rechipped my vehicle and average 30 mpg although there are excess exhaust emissions - sometimes very black fumes. However, off road performance is poor. On wet grass it just sits and spins and on wet mudded tracks I have similar problems. It can be most embarrasing. Perhaps it is the tyres that are the problem but I don’t want to compromise the quiet road use performance. Anyone with similar experiences?

I have done 70,000km’s in 12 months, bought it secondhand on 32,000km’s. If it wasn’t for the radio software upgrade and right front electric seat new gear frame, the car would have had a 100% perfect record. The standard tyres have done 100,000km’s it is now time to change them. It is amazing for a 4x4 that the tyres and alignment stays true. I average 12.3kilos/liter at +120kph, my best were 13.6 at 120kph. Can recomend this SUV with pride. NB! Excellent handling and accelaration, thanks to 400nm.

The Freelander 2 is an entirely different car to the Freelander 1 and really deserves to be rated separately as the reviews above can give a rather misleading impression. This car is simply brilliant. Everything from drivability to comfort and safety have been improved. I have owned the car for almost 3 years and had not one single problem. The word is slowly getting out that this is a car Land Rover have got right as they have clearly learned from the mistakes on the Mk 1.

Please read - I do not believe this. Having had two previous Range Rover Sport’s and on the whole having been very pleased with the vehicle; and the residual has been good. I ordered a 2009 mode build and took delivery of my new RRS HSE on the 14th November 2008, from the same supplier of my previous two RRS in Peterborough. I was given a quick vehicle check and off I drove; then 3 hours later the nightmare started - auto box not working correctly, having to switch to trip-tronic, contacted the dealer, no answer, stranded in Horsham, West Sussex. Saturday the 15th - contacted the dealer three times, I had turbo failure, loss of automatic gear box, the whole vehicle shook, diesel spilling down the sides of the car, due to lack of response support from the dealer I contacted Land Rover Support, who having taken the vehicle details, number plate, chassis number I was told I could not have the car as it was showing it was still at Land Rovers compound in the Midlands and as they did not have any details re-warranty they could not assist me. Sunday the 16th of November, reluctantly L/R assistant did attend, the person who attended confirmed I did have the vehicle and I was the legal owner, they tried to fix the auto-box, recommended the vehicle should be returned to Peterborough and they would arrange a loan car, I would have to give a credit card and agree to a debit of £2,500 pounds? The way I was treated, abandoned, notwithstanding I was heading off to Germany I had to continue my journey and pray I would make it. Monday the 17th I took the vehicle to land Rover in Monchengladbach who looked over the vehicle told me I should reject the vehicle, there reasons were:- body damage, the vehicle has had a full re spray , damage and repairs to various parts of the car, the interior needs completely replacing, all the leather seats need replacing, metal exposed with no paint or under coat. And Rover Monchengladbach contacted land Rover UK as the German dealer could not help me as the warranty was still not showing on any system. A representative form Land Rover contacted me in the end I had been trying to contact them up and till that time I had spoken with no less than 35+ people within land Rover UK. The representative of Land Rover informed me he could not see until the following week as he was off to Mons for a vehicle show and they did not have a spare car for me so I would have to wait till Friday 28th November. Please note I had formerly in writing rejected this vehicle on the 15th of November. This was later confirmed by Land Rover on Monday the 17th of November. Friday 28th November - in attendance myself, the land Rover Representative and land Rovers technical person, following the inspection, they gave me a copy of their findings, confirming the major faults with the vehicle i.e. very bad paint work, all the leather seats would need to be replaced with new, along with the aforementioned , even having inspected the vehicle and confirming not just to me but the garage, the vehicle should not have been supplied in the first instance, the Land Rover Rep was still trying to get me to take the car. Saturday 29th An independent technician inspected the vehicle he was from [ADAC] and confirmed all of the faults and found a further 25-30 more major faults, he confirmed that the vehicle had either been in an accident or very badly damaged and should not have been supplied, he informed the Land Rover Garage the vehicle would undergo a full investigation by the authorities and would be impounded. At no point has land Rover offered to compensate me, apologise I have formerly rejected this vehicle yet Land Rover are insisting the vehicle is OK and I should take it?. Number of serious faults found within the first 36hrs of collecting the car 25, following the inspection’s a further 35 + I welcome your comments please.

I have just had a Range Rover Sport (2008) TDV8 HSE for 3 days as a hire car, while my own car was being repaired. I own a 2008 Dodge Nitro SXT V6. I found the cabin in the Range Rover very cramped with no room for the driver. The Dash board is just inches away from you, and every time you take your left hand off the steering wheel you knock the auto gearbox lever. I found the ride of this vehicle very poor, so poor in fact that it made me sick. It rolls and bounces around all over the place - it’s horrible! By the time I did my 10 mile drive to work on one day I almost threw up. My stomach was that upset by all the rolling around. I was totally shocked, as I expected the Range Rover to be miles ahead of my Dodge Nitro, but actually its miles behind. My Dodge is far superior in many ways. Oh and finally the Harmon Kardon sound system is also rubbish. The stereo in my wife’s Astra sounds better with more bass. Not a good car at all. If you are looking at Range Rovers, you seriously need to check out other large 4x4 vehicles as well.

I bought mine new and it has been totally reliable. I often make a 600 mile trip to France and this car just eats the miles. Driven gently I get 29 mpg which is better than I expected. Cruising at 130 kph I get 25 mpg. The driving position is superb and passengers get a great view. I do use the car off road sometimes and it is awesome, I was expecting it to struggle on my brothers farm following his Defender but it just kept going through terrain you would struggle to walk over... much to his disappointment! The interior is comfortable and very tough. I carry all sorts of mucky gear and equipment but it always cleans up fine. Other than the 7 seat Discovery I cant think of a more versatile car.

Just love the Freelander 2. Off and on road it is brilliant. Just a pity that the colour range is a bit uninspiring. I have the tamboraflame (orange) seen on most Freelander publicity but no longer available. Such a pity. When we see other Freelander 2’s in this colour the other car occupants invariably wave at us and us at them. Silly maybe but this car is fun so why not enjoy!

I got over-exited before Christmas having eventually got rid of Jeep 2.7CRD which in fairness was one of the most comfortable cars I have ever sat in. However that thing dropped in value like mad over the 3 years that we owned it and I decided I wanted more fun out of my next car so looked around at the sporty models and decided on the supercharged which goes like the proverbial off a shovel. Is it fun... oh yes and whoever says it does 18MPG or as I have seen 22MPG if you take it easy is on another planet. Average is 13.2MPG, it is outrageous, as its worse than a Hummer. Car cost £60k when new with all the toys, DVD, Playstation etc and now nobody wants one and here I am again with something that has lost me a fortune. Next time getting a cheap estate and a Noble!!

Still own a mark 1 (diesel) with 136k miles and no real problems encountered. The mark 2 is however a class apart in every respect. More comfortable, quieter and refined than many a prestige saloon- speaks volumes for the engineering /development team entrusted to overcome the mark 1’s unenviable reputation. Have now covered 30k trouble free miles-oh by the way new cars tyres last twice as long as the original as well as having vastly superior handling.

Fantastic car when everything is working, trouble is the same fault happened every 4-5months. The problem was associated with the automatic hand break release, which knocked out parking sensors, slow gear change, reversing light etc. we were told this is a continuous generic fault with LR which required the clutch being replaced. The clutch was replaced but still continued to register a fault after several months. On the 6th occasion with the same fault LR said the clutch had gone again and refused to honour its warranty, leaving me with a £1500 bill, impressed was not a word I could use. The dealership could not believe the headoffice approach and could only offer a 10% labour cost reduction as their hands were tied. There I was thinking that this car can go anywhere and do anything yet can’t even handle the school run, the car is just over 2years old and only 21k on the clock, so to say I was ’appalled’ at LR stance is an understatement to say the least. Sold the LR and bought a JEEP Grand Cherokee, which whilst isn’t quite as refined they are at least realiable and as capable off road as a LR. Would I buy another LR "ABSOLUTELY NOT" and would advise others to stay well clear until LR can sort out the problems on reliablity, which they are renowned for being appalling at and honour their commitments to warranties.

At the moment I drive for work a 7.5 Ton Isuzu and I can honestly say that that is much smoother, much more responsive, and a much more comfortable drive than the Freelander 2 I am unfortunate to own. It wallows about like a drunken elephant, acceleration is appalling, there is just no power. You have to absolutely floor it to get it moving at any speed and constant gear changing traffic is just hard work. I now realise that you have to have an automatic if you buy one of these. It feels as if it is built out of tin, try closing the bonnet, sounds like a Ford Transit, and if you don’t use it much the battery runs down, even the batteries in the remote run out fast. Yesterday we drove into central London and had the Sat Nav set to take us there, it was utterly useless when there was a problem on the roads, admittedly it got us close but when there was a diversion it gave up, several times it did not even show a route to take. All in all it’s probably the worst car for drivability, I have been unfortunate to own. On the other side of the coin, there is loads of room inside and plenty of boot space and if I get stuck in the snow it will probably be brilliant, and if you take your cars to uncharted territory or live rural then it will suit fine. But for a comfortable road car forget it.

This is the biggest pile of sh**e i have ever owned. It has given me nothing but trouble since day one. I think I could bath my son in the passenger footwell after a night of rain, that’s how bad the leaking is. The seats have jamed twice on me and it takes for EVER to heat the cabin up. The only good thing about it is the engine, which isn’t even Land Rovers, its a Peugeot/ Ford hdi engine!! Stay well away if you even want a half DECENT car. Buy a RAV4/ CRV, VITARA, X TRAIL, TIGUAN or even a Kuga if you want a nice reliable and easy to run small 4x4

The best family transport bar none, one or two very minor niggles, but they were sorted quickly by the dealer (Lakeland, Land Rover). It’s very quiet and comfortably, with superb practicality and is very easy to drive despite the size. The one and only downfall for me was fuel economy, I averaged 27mpg, but in hindsight I wish I’d have kept it. If you can afford to run it get one, you wont regret it.

I’ve has the RRS supercharged for about 3 months now! Probably the best car I’ve ever owned! I’ve chipped mine so its 408BHP... it pulls like a train! Never had a problem! It’s also on LPG so I’m getting around 34mpg on urban driving!! Nothing beats that roar of the 4 litre V8 at 4,000RPM.

I bought a new 3 door V6 2.5 in UK in 2002 and exported it to the Caribbean, where I live. After 4 years the automatic gear box packed up. Various remedies were tried but to no avail and I had to air freight a new one in at my own expense - the best that LR would do was supply a new gear box at the re-con price! I sold the vehicle fast and, guess what, bought a new late 2006 V6 2.5 5 door for a knockdown price - do I ever learn? Anyway, 3 and a half years later I have had no trouble until last week when it started mis-firing. three of the six coils are faulty, according to the computer. FedEx are bringing me some new ones, hopefully arriving tomorrow. It really does drive beautifully on and off road - I live off-road up a steep rough dirt track but the difficulty of obtaining spare parts in such a remote location and the very positive road reports on the Freelander 2 are making me actively consider changing now before the next catastrophe!! I was very impressed with an Australian video on YouTube showing the Freelander 2 on the rough. And if you squint it looks like a Range Rover!!

Best and worst car I’ve ever owned. Bought new in 2006 and everything ok for first eighteen months or so, bit slow but supreme ride and coped with everything from being family runabout to caravan towcar. After about 30,000 miles the problems started; new steering rack, EGR valves, various suspension bushes and arms, tailgate handle, fuel filler lock, cracked sunroof surround. Worst fault was when just out of warranty, air suspension continually lowered for no apparent reason and all special programs were lost. Took Land Rover dealer over a week to fix the problem (something to do with brake sensors). Finally decided it had to go when whirring noise developed from timing chain area at 45k miles; was told that it was a four to five hour job just to diagnose (@ £120 an hour). Great car as long as it is within warranty, otherwise you’ll need really deep pockets!

Yes, they have a few small fixable problems but so do all others. I swapped from a BMW X5 5 years ago and have had 3 new Range Rovers since. Expensive, but certainly the best by far, brilliant after sales service and have even exchanged one I was not happy with after 4 months. How’s that for service?

It is incredibly spacious and versatile, it can carry seven in comfort, has great road manners and off road it’s untouchable. The downsides are the acceleration isn’t as good as it could be and the leasing costs are silly. Overall a great car though.

Always wanted this cult truck and bought one after moving to Australia Oct. 2007. Going from a smart Renault Scenic to a tank was a real adjustment. Parallel parking was challenging to say the least with a turning circle as big as a semi, its a bumpy ride, so you’ll never fall asleep at the wheel and the seats are only made for skinny people, not problems there. But I love this truck that has no schnick schnack, just what you need for serious off-road fun, nothing fancy that’ll break and it commands attention when you drive down the beach! I love the look on people’s faces when they say what great shape our truck is in and we tell them that its only 3 years old. Not everyone can drive a cult object!

I paid £18,000 pound for mine in 2009 on a 05 plate... totally brilliant car. I never get bored of driving it, it feels like a £60,000 car. It is very good value for money... if you want a fantastic all round 4x4 buy the Disco - nothing can touch it.

Hi, I took delivery of my 55 plate Rand Rover Sport supercharged on the 18th of October. Great cat at first, did what it says on the tin but very crap in the snow due to the tyres - it got stuck in a field due to coming off the road, even the different settings did not help. Two weeks ago it started knocking underneath, I took it to main dealer to solve problem and they charged me for new ball-joints. I got the car back, it is still knocking!! Took it back this Thursday, engineer said they do knock if you drive them hard through corners!! Rubbish!! The problem is still to be resolved and I am not paying for it this time, they are going to fit new anti-roll bar bushes then the next morning took it back again, engine management light came on due to incorrect egr valve fitted but I have to pay for new one even though there was a recall for them then the electronic handbrake was stuck on - I couldn’t shift the car since I have owned this vehicle it has had 12 faults with it... not good on a 50k vehicle!! I’d go for the X5 - better reliability!!! Or the ugly Cayenne. The power of the vehicle is good and fuel consumption isn’t too bad on a long run, around the 18mpg mark, sometimes near 22 if you drive steady. Comfy, great looks but in conclusion... totally rubbish!!!!!!!!!!

After 4 yrs/60k, the Disco remains in my view the best family/offroad car in the business. Early software niggles were soon put behind, very patiently and efficiently foc by the dealer (who has been expensive but first class dealing with routine servicing/recalls/warranty stuff etc). 6sp manual now loosened up and with the aid of ecu upgrade (reputed to knock out a much more respectable 230bhp), can regularly achieve over 30 mpg; even with roofbox, 5 bikes, 4 kids, 2 adults and fully loaded, the Disco returned 28mpg across France. (Car computer tends to read about 2-3mpg higher than actual). Huge reseves of torque mean it still pulls like a train from 70 - 90 mph when on French motorway even loaded with holiday gear and roofbox. The vehicle will go anywhere I normally need it to go, whether out on the farm or on the school run. Historic worries about Land Rover’s (un)reliabilty have compelled me to purchase extended warranty but all OK so far. I am so glad I didn’t buy a Pathfinder.

The best drive and the best tow car ever. Let down by continual niggles and minor faults. Initial experience under warranty was worse still, but moving away from the supplying dealer for further work and servicing has improved the ownership experience. Economy is marginal. I average 23mpg and have only once averaged 30mpg on a long motorway cruise at a restrained speed. When towing 2 horses in a heavy trailer, the car is fantastic, making it easy to maintain progress while providing the horses with a very smooth ride. Other minor niggles: Constantly blowing 10Amp fuses if you allow the windscreen washer fluid to freeze; the Plastic toggles holding the cover over the towbar electrics break for fun, I buy them 5 at a time, the last one broke without being touched. Park Distance Control Sensors are the most unreliable I have encountered, a badly placed jet-wash gives you a parts bill for £33 + VAT & Labour. Would I have another one? Probably, there is nothing to touch it; better than a 5-series on the Motorway and better than anything else as a tow-car. And it seats 7. I would just hope for better luck with reliability. I would also go to the dealer who now services the car (18 miles) and avoid the dealer who supplied mine new (6 miles).

Hi, I’m currently driving a 2005 Freelander TD4 S SW and only one word can sum it up - TERRIBLE! The car has given me sooo much trouble. The interior is shocking as well, your legs are offset to the right for the pedals and the steering is offset to the left! What’s that all about??? The seats are far from comfortable and the engine is noisy and underpowered. Visually I like the car alot, it looks funky and makes me want a new one but after this car, I don’t think so! Also I used to teach in a school and another teacher drove a new 2008 2.2 TD4 HSE and she was having trouble as well with hers! It doesn’t come as a surprise to see LR down at the bottom of Satisfaction and Reliabilty surveys because they are terrible.

I bought this car as an ex demo with 2,000 miles on clock from a main dealer. In the 4 years I have had it, it’s practively lived in the garage:- 2 replacement clutches, hydraulic clutch failure, both window regulators in drivers and rear drivers side door faulty, new steering rack, stereo speaker in drivers door, 2 replacement headlights on drivers side and rear nearside taillight replaced due to water leaking in, rear tailgate window leaked, washer bottle cracked, ’god knows how’, new exhaust, forward mount of the rear diff replaced, 2 sets of front brake pads and on the 2nd time had to have the calipers and disc’s changed as well, new set of tyres all round, ’this car by the way has only done to date 35,000 miles, numerous headlight bulbs blown 3rd set of wiper blades. As we speak it still has to get done:- alarm imobliser fault and noisy tappet sorted. Good things about this car, looks nice and good soft roader, body wise strongly built. Would I buy another one? Not on your nelly! I’m now looking at either a Hyundai Tuscan or a Kia Sorrento, my own fault really. I did some reseach on Freelanders before I bought this and one of the main comments was that you will be on first names terms with your mechanic, and it’s true. Mine is Dave by the way, he’s not here at the moment; gone on a Carribean cruise - I think with my money!!!

Really pleased with the Freelander, does exactly what it says on the tin ! Mine may be a bit dated yet with 100k on the clock it cruises along very comfortably. Being manual it is a little agricultural around town but I accept this as all part of the Land Rover experience. Once rolling along in 5th it is not bad on the economy front, all things considered. I have the 3 door so the hardtop bit at the back unclips for summer fun! I believe mine has the BMW engine with a timing chain so no cam belt service which saves a few bob! It’s not a luxury vehicle but has good a/c, leather seats etc., and a ruddy good radio/cd system. It has done 30k on a set of tyres and there is still plenty of tread left. All in all, yes it has it’s faults but it is a Land Rover not a Jag and 4 wheel drive during this snowy, cold spell has been a saviour! Here’s to the next 100k miles!

No No No. It will break down. I had two with over 100,000 miles each (company cars, not my choice). Very good handling, tough off-road but too high first gear and lack bottom end for towing or off-road work. Very poor ventilation/demisting, noisy and sooo unreliable.

I have now owned 2 Defenders and can’t imagine life without one. I carry waterproofs for when it’s raining outside (and therefore inside too). I learned from having a sunroof in the first one NOT to have that option again, and consequently I don’t have to wear a hat too when it rains. They go anywhere, take kids, dogs, shopping, furniture, anything you want to carry, they tow trailers with ease and you look uber cool in them! Other Defender drivers wave at you, especially if you have pimped your ride! They’re classless, and look the same as they did years ago. You can’t get into town carparks due to the height, you can’t turn around in the streets due to the terrible turning circle and you can’t burn anyone off the roads at traffic lights. However, they are the BEST vehicles in the world - who could want for anything more!

A superb all rounder, on the road smooth easy to drive and very comfy. Pulls well in all gears with lots of power from the 4lt petrol/LPG fuelled lump. Lots of toys inside..sat nav, dvd player, air con, 12 disk cd changer plus many more. Off road go anywhere. Snow, mud, water will not stop it. I can take it right to the edge of the canal to fish. Sitting on the back with the split tail gate I have a shelter and a seat, with a power outlet right next to me I can make tea without moving. Adjustable height suspension makes getting in and out easy even for my disabled mother. Also, ask my neighbours how well it pulls in the snow!

I have had my TD4 2001 Freelander for 5 years now and I can say this has been a brilliant little 4x4. It has just done 168,000kms and is still going strong. Mechanically it’s sound and passes its MoT annually with minimal cost. In the last 5 years I have had to replace a alternator, brake caliper and some coolant pipes, not bad for the sort of mileage it has done. Only bugbear is the electric windows, only one of which still work. It was great in the snow and kept me mobile, it has towed my horse and trailer around on a Sunday without a problem. I am going to part exchange it shortly as I need more towing weight and I will be sort of sorry to see it go, not sure if I have been lucky with mine but it’s served me well.

I bought a 2001 Freelander from a main dealer costing £ 12,500 .For the first 4 years it was a brilliant car then after that it was rubbish. I had it serviced every time it was due, but the head gasket went on it four times costing a fortune to replace. The model was a 1.8 petrol. The milage was only 71000, which for a car of 11 years old is nothing. I contacted Land Rover about the problem and they didn’t want to know. I was told by an AA patrol officer it was a design flaw with this model, which I told Landrover, but they still didn’t want to know.S o dont buy a 1.8 petrol Land Rover as it will be a costly mistake. Cost for head gasket is £650 a time!

I have always wanted a Land Rover 4x4, after a little research I decided to have an early Defender 110 300TDi, due to the fact that this particular vehicle does not carry any fancy electronic gadgets EGR ECU and the like, and due to most work can be carried out by any DIY Mechanic. Purchased about 3 months ago work required for MOT, 2 front calipers, new rear xmember, welding to outrigger and that’s it. For a 15 Year old car that’s pretty good. I am not that mechanically minded, however, most of the work required has been done by myself, ie, Callipers, S/S Braided Brake Lines, Brake Bleeding, Brake pad replacement (easiest pad replacement I’ve done.), A DIY Mechanics dream. Cheap Insurance, Cheap Tax, Low Emission Zone tax exempt. Economy Have had highest 31.17 MPG, lowest 23MPG but depends on your driving style. Road handling is fairly good for the size. Off-Road capabillity is extremely good. Turns lots of heads. At 175,000 miles the engine is in fairly good working order.

The Defender is a great tool. My 140,000 miler has towed a large caravan and loaded horse trailer and it is really planted on the road. Fit a roof rack and shift timber and furniture with ease. Your area flooded? Wade through it with a Land Rover. The 300 Tdi engine is arguably the best of the bunch for DIY owners’ with no on board computer to worry about. The later TD5 is more powerful and smoother however and this has been superseded by one from a Ford Transit! It leaks in the rain (wear a coat!) and is not a comfortable long distance machine. Parking can also be a problem in height restricted car parks for town dwellers’. Second row seats are poor and there is only a lap strap in the centre one if you have children. Seat belts are only fitted in the rear side facing seats on later models in line with legislation - again check if child safety is an issue. Insurance companies’ get concerned if you tell them it is a 12 seater and ask more questions than usual. Pattern spares are abundant and cheap and DIY repairs are easy. Fuel consumption is pretty good for a 2.2 tonne vehicle at 30 mpg when driven carefully and even 25pmg when towing my large caravan. It will go anywhere, do anything and is a tough as old boots - remember bodywork dents add kudos!

I own a Land Rover Defender 90 300 tdi pick up and I have recently put a 3" lift kit on it and an external roll cage. It is a great truck, both on-road and off-road, with its big chunky tyres it goes anywhere. It even still ran after going through a ford and suking up water due to a faulty snorkel. The best Land Rover out there.

I bought my Freelander second hand having done research that advocated a cautionary approach. The vehicle was on at top book price for its year and on face of it appeared to be value for money. However, alarm bells were ringing about the mechanical and electical history of Freelanders in general so I forked out for extra warranty cover in addition to the usual dealer post sale assurances. I’m so glad that I did! I do a working commute of around 50 miles per day to my local office but am ocassionally required to travel anywhere in the country. I purchased a 4x4 because my work does take me into areas, weathers and terrains that require the capabilities of this sort of vehicle and as a health care professional I cannot contemplate any circumumstances where I fail to attend a client. Reliability of transport is therefore an essential part of my professional portfolio. I am presently faced with another four years - the length of the finance deal - of uncertainty with this vehicle. I have been running the vehicle for 8 months and in that time it has been off the road three times for repairs. At this moment in time it is off the road for for repair of the head following a water leak that was only discovered during a routine service. Luckily I have a very good relationship with my dealer as I have bought all my cars of him in the past. He has been good enough to provide me with transport so that I can continue with my work. Would I buy another Land Rover? Nope! If I performed to the same standard as my vehicle, I would be struck off (not to mention sued)!

Best looking 4x4 on the road by far but then again I’m probably biased. The V6 diesel engine is smooth and quiet and has proved pretty nippy for such a big car. It really took a lot to stick with Land Rover after owning the previous Freelander model but I’m a firm believer in supporting home grown products and this one is a beauty.
