Ryder wins new automotive logistics contract

Ryder has won the Just-In-Time (JIT) inbound logistics contract to support the manufacture of the second generation MINI.

Work on the new MINI is already underway at the BMW Group plant in Oxford. To support the operation Ryder has opened a new logistics depot near Abingdon, where due to the time-critical nature of the collections, Ryder has deployed a dedicated management team who will mirror the plant’s seven-day-a-week production schedule.

Ryder will collect components from 15 sites and deliver them in sequence deliveries to the BMW Group plant in Oxford ready for assembly.

To facilitate this, Ryder is deploying a brand new fleet of Euro 5 compliant tractor units, plus 28 trailers, which have been specially designed to support the BMW Group’s plant layout and its requirement for rapid unloading of key components. Fifty drivers plus an eight-strong management team have been put in place to operate the contract.

Peter Backhouse, Vice President and Managing Director Ryder Europe said, “It is exciting to be able to contribute to the continuing success of this iconic brand through our automotive logistics expertise. We are employing a bespoke solution that calls on our experience and skill in managing complex automotive contracts to ensure that we provide an exemplary service to the BMW Group.”
