Fuel Protests begin in earnest in London.
Lorry drivers will descend on Downing Street today, in protest of rocketing fuel prices. A convoy of around 1,000 truckers from around the country will head to London in an attempt to achieve the largest ever fuel-duty protest.
Diesel recently passed the record £1.20 per litre mark. Protest organisers say that the haulage industry just cannot compete with foreign hauliers running on cheap fuel purchased abroad.
The hauliers from around the country will stage a rally at Marble Arch and later on an assignment will hand a letter in to 10 Downing Street.
The protest comes in light of rising crude oil prices and increasing taxation. The government has planned to increase fuel duty in October coupled with planned increases in road tax. Many smaller hauliers may have to close down resulting in job losses. U.K hauliers want a fuel duty rebate arguing that the increasing cost will be passed onto the consumer if nothing is done.
Transport for London has said that it will close part of the A40 today to allow hauliers to park.
