Insignia aims to undercut the Mondeo
Fans of the Ford Mondeo may have a rethink when the new Vauxhall Insignia is made available – as it is set to significantly undercut its competitor.
Despite its extra size, it is expected that the Insignia’s prices will be more in line with the Vauxhall Vectra despite having a more premium interior than its predecessor.
European executive director of Vauxhall/Opel marketing Alain Visser commented: “The Insignia looks like a premium car but will not sell for premium prices. It will compete in the same pricing area as Vectra. It will be a close pricing match for anything in the market.”
The Insignia is widely viewed as a major step forward for the manufacturer and could ultimately elevate the brand. Vauxhall claim that the cabin is designed to avoid distractions with a high-mounted screen, and a central-console operated multi-function control which maximises hand-eye co-ordination.
Jochen Werner, assistant chief designer for interiors, said: “We benchmarked premium models with the aim of making the driver and passengers feel they have got an upgrade.”
The estate is due to be released in early 2009.
