The strike for better pay by tanker drivers’ looks to be over, as their union Unite have negotiated a 14% pay rise over the next two years.
According to the employers Hoyer and Suckling the increase will be worth 9% in the first year and 5% in the second, taking average annual earnings to £41,750.
Drivers and union officials rejected an earlier offer of about £36,000. The union representing the drivers, Unite, has urged them to accept the new offer. The drivers’ will now be balloted on the deal and are expected to give their verdict by the end of this month.
The strike is said to cost up to £50m according to leading business men in the Devon and Cornwall area has been rumoured that the strike. The region was one of the worst hit in the UK with nearly 600 filling stations running dry during the four-day strike.
