Nine million motorists are expected to be affected according to recent news that road tax reforms will increase costs for high polluting vehicles. Operators of the national liftshare network www.liftshare.com are urging motorists to consider car sharing as a way of both reducing driving costs as well as helping the environment.

A typical liftshare members saves themselves £1,000 a year by sharing their empty seats so this could certainly help to take the sting out of the new reforms which, it is estimated, could result in some paying up to £245 more on their Road Tax.

Recent months have already seen a dramatic increase in the number of people turning to carsharing. The average number of new members signing up every month has grown from an average of 4,500 members per month at the beginning of the year to more than 15,000 in June alone.

Ali Clabburn, founder of liftshare.com commented;

“We’ve had a staggering increase in the number of people signing up to find a car share match over the last few months and I think that that is in no small part due to the rising fuel costs. Now that some people will be affected by road tax increases as well we hope it will make them think more carefully about the benefit of sharing their empty seats, saving themselves money and helping the environment.”
