German giant Volkswagen has unwrapped the sixth generation Golf. The car is a giant in fleet sales and the German maker is predicting that the car will be the safest, most technically advanced and most dynamic Golf yet.
Professor Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board, Volkswagen AG said: “This sixth generation of Golf cars will completely redefine the quality and comfort level of its class over broad categories, offering more customer value than ever before.”
The VW boffins have taken design cues on the new Golf from the stunning new Scirocco. The car has a number of defined crease lines on the side while it has also been given proportioned flared surfaces and recesses. VW claims the car retains its classic Golf shape.
On the inside you’ll have white backlit dials which sit in individual cowells behind a three spoke steering wheel with the options of controls for entertainment and communications functions.
The car will come with new petrol and diesel engines, these include a 2.0-litre TDI 110PS common rail diesel engine which emits 119g/km of CO2 while returning 62.7mpg on the combined cycle. Other diesel variants available include the 90PS, 140PS and 170PS outputs – these are linked to a choice of six-speed manual or DSG gearboxes. There will be petrol engines with TSI technology with outputs of 80PS, 102PS, 122PS and 160PS.
VW will offer the Adaptive Chassis Control (ACC) will be offered on the Golf for the first time. At present this system is available on the Passat CC and standard on the new Scirocco. According to the maker this allows the driver to select from normal, comfort or sport modes to define the desired suspension, steering and accelerator response settings for any particular journey.
Automatic Distance Control is also offered – it monitors the area around the vehicle through a series of sensors and will, if necessary, reduce the vehicle’s speed should an obstruction be identified. In extreme cases the car can be brought to a complete halt.
Prices and specification will be announced closer to the vehicle’s launch at the end of this year.
