South East – Weekly summary of roadworks in Kent and Sussex

M20 Signing work
There will an off-peak daytime closure (10am – 4pm) of lane three on the A249 on the approach to junction 7 of the M20 from Monday 8 September to Friday 12 September. There will also be a lane one closure on the M20 interchange at Junction 7 on the above times and dates.

From Monday 15 September to Friday 19 September there will be an overnight (8pm to 5am) single lane closure of the dedicated Londonbound entry slip road at junction 7.

Both sets of works are to install signs at the side of the carriageway. The lane closures will be fully signed in advance.

A2 Road Marking works
There will be an overnight (8pm – 6am) lane one closure on the coastbound carriageway between the A2 junction with A2050 New Dover Road and the A2 junction with Coxhill Road on Tuesday 9 September.

On Wednesday 10 September there will be an overnight (8pm – 6am) lane one closure on the Londonbound carriageway from the A2 junction with Coxhill Road and junction with A2050 New Dover Road.

On Thursday 11 and Friday 12 September there will be temporary traffic lights overnight (8pm – 6am) on the single carriageway section of the A2 between Lydden and Coldred.

The works are to renew white lines and cat’s eyes on the road. All lane closures will be fully signed in advance.

M23 Vegetation Clearance
There will be a hard shoulder closure on the Londonbound and coastbound carriageways of the M23 between junctions 7 and 11 from Monday 15 to Monday 22 September. The hard shoulder closures are to remove vegetation on the side of the carriageway and will be fully signed in advance.

A27 Southwick Tunnel Routine Maintenance
There will be a full overnight (8pm – 6am) closure of Southwick Tunnel on Friday 19 and Saturday 20 September for routine maintenance works. There will also be an overnight lane closure on the eastbound carriageway on Monday 22 September for the removal of equipment. All closures will be fully signed in advance and during the total closures traffic will follow a fully signed diversion route.

A21 Flimwell to Hurst Green Safety Improvements
Work starts on Monday 15 September to revise the road markings and replace existing road signs on the A21 London Road between Flimwell and Hurst Green in East Sussex. There will be temporary overnight (8pm to 6am) lane closures at various phases of the works with traffic being controlled by convoy vehicle at 10 mph through the works site.

Ongoing work:

A2 Bean to Cobham widening works
Work to widen the A2 to four lanes with hard shoulders in each direction between Bean to Cobham continues this week.

Three narrow lanes remain open on the Londonbound carriageway from Cobham junction to Pepperhill during the daytime with various lane closures at night between 8pm and 5am.

On the coastbound carriageway three narrow lanes remain open from the Ebbsfleet exit slip road to the Cobham exit slip road with various lane closures at night between 8pm and 5am.

A20 White Horse Hill Bridge works
Work to refurbish White Horse Hill overbridge to protect it from corrosion continues this week. Sections of the A20 between the A259 and the A260 will be closed overnight (8pm to 6am) from Monday 1 to Thursday 4 September, Monday 22 to Thursday 25 September and Monday 29 September to Thursday 2 October while work on the bridge and in the tunnel is carried out concurrently.

Additionally, the coastbound A20 will be closed overnight (8pm to 6am) at White Horse Hill bridge from Monday 8 to Friday 12 September and there will be overnight lane closures on the Londonbound carriageway from Monday 15 to Friday 19 September.

A fully signed diversion route will be in place for each closure.

A27 Tangmere Footbridge
Work to construct a new footbridge across the A27 at Tangmere and Boxgrove in West Sussex continues this week. From Tuesday 9 September to Friday 23 September the safety barrier along the bridge will be installed. During this time existing narrow lane running on the eastbound carriageway with a 40mph speed limit will remain in place whilst the work is carried out. It will also be necessary to close lane one of the eastbound carriageway for two nights between 8pm and 6am during the works.

M20 Junction 11 – 12 Quick Movable Barrier Installation
Work to change the road layout of sections of the M20 between junctions 11 and 12 as well as entry slip roads at junction 11, junction 11a, and junction 12 continues this week. The work is being carried out 24/7 with at least two lanes running at all times and hard shoulder running where necessary. There will also be an overnight closure of the entry and exit slip roads at junction 11 and junction 12 on some dates.

A21 Bridge Safety Work
Work to replace the parapets on six bridges on the A21 around Tonbridge continues this week. Phase 2 of the work on the Londonbound carriageway is set to begin at Lower Street, Leigh Road, Powder Mill Road, Lower Haysden Lane and Upper Haysden Lane bridges. There will be an overnight closure of the Londonbound A21 on Monday 18 and Tuesday 19 August to install narrow running lanes for this stage of works. The closures will run from Vauxhall Lane to Morely’s Interchange, including the entry slip roads to the A21 at Vauxhall Lane and Quarry Hill. Following this, two narrow lanes will remain open in the direction of the work, with temporary single lane closures overnight and a 50 mph speed limit in place day and night. During the overnight closures fully signed diversions will be in place.

A259 King Offa Way Signalisation
Work on the signalisation upgrade to the traffic lights at the eastern end of A259 King Offa Way in East Sussex will resume on Monday 8 September. The existing traffic lights will be turned off and there will be no right turn at the junction. A fully signed diversion will be in place. For the safety of the workforce these restrictions will be in place 24 hours per day until works are completed.

A23 Pyecombe Fencing Work
Work to replace a safety fence next to the southbound carriageway entry slip onto the A291 Dale Hill junction near Pyecombe continues this week. Narrow lanes remain in place with a 40mph speed limit. On Saturday 13 September there will be an overnight closure of the entry slip road between 8pm and 6am. A fully signed diversion route will be in place at this time.

A27 Arundel Bridge Refurbishment
Works to refurbish Arundel Railway Bridge will begin Friday 12 September.

The work will take place throughout September and October 2008. The A27 over the railway bridge will be closed on the following weekends whilst works to the road surface and deck structure are carried out:

8pm Friday 12 September until 6am Monday 15 September
8pm Friday 26 September until 6am Monday 29 September
8pm Friday 10 October until 6am Monday 13 October

These are the scheduled closures but are weather dependant. If the work is unable to be completed during any of these weekends, two contingency dates will be used which will be as follows:

8pm Friday 17 October until 6am Monday 20 October
8pm Friday 31 October until 6am Monday 03 November

A259 Brenzett Roundabout to A259 jct with Camber Road Drainage Works
Overnight work to carry out drainage surveys on both sides of the road from the A2070 Brenzett Roundabout to the junction with Camber Bend near Rye, East Sussex continue this week. There continues to be overnight single lane closures from 8pm to 6am, Monday to Friday along 300 metre sections of one carriageway. During this time traffic is controlled by two way temporary traffic lights.

M2 Bridge Strengthening Work
Work to strengthen Ruins Barn Farm bridge and Selling Road bridge over the M2 at Sittingbourne and Faversham in Kent continue this week. To limit delays to road users, work will take place on both bridges at the same time, and will be completed in two phases.

The first phase started on Monday 8 September for nine weeks. The hard shoulder on both sides of the road will be closed around each bridge, with two narrow lanes remaining.

The second phase of the work will start on Tuesday 11 November and will last for six weeks. Lane 2 on both sides of the road around each bridge will be closed to traffic, which will run on two narrow lanes in lane 1 and on the hard shoulder. This temporary road layout will be put in place during various temporary overnight lane closures around both bridges between 8pm and 5am from Friday 7 November to Monday 10 November.

For the safety of road users and road workers a fully signed 50mph speed limit will be in place around both bridges throughout the work.
