RAC will spot-check motor traders
With the Block Exemption on the way out the industry is set to have a Motor Industry Code of Practice (MICP) to make sure that garages are carrying out work to the highest standard.
It has been confirmed that the RAC has been appointed as the provider of compliance spot-checks for the Motor Industry Code of Practice (MICP) for Service and Repair.
This means that RAC Inspections Services will carry out quality checks on vehicles undergoing service or repair work by each motor trader subscribing to the Code at least once within a 24-month period. The RAC will also assess the motor trader’s premises, its operations and service levels that it has to achieve to meet the standards set by Motor Codes Limited – the stand alone body set up to run the scheme on behalf of the industry.
RAC checks are just one part of the Code’s initiative. Motor traders who fail to demonstrate that they achieve an acceptable level of service will be subject to further testing of their workshops and service standards, with potential expulsion from the programme.
Adrian McCarthy, head of RAC technical services, said: “RAC recognises that it’s important to continuously monitor and improve standards of servicing and repair, and this scheme will enable us to support and help raise quality in the motor industry. We are pleased to be the preferred provider of Motor Industry Code of Practice for Service and repair compliance checks. These inspections will help to ensure that motor traders signed up to the Code will offer motorists honest and fair services.”
Meanwhile, Chris Mason, director of Motor Codes, said: “I am pleased that RAC completed the extensive tender process and has been successful in joining this important industry initiative. Along with the other service providers on board, Motor Codes will now be working with leaders in their respective fields to deliver the operational services that gives the Code its teeth.”
