(Highways Agency) Weekly summary of roadworks in Kent and Sussex

A2 Filter Drain Recycling

From Monday 22 until Saturday 27 September there will be overnight (8pm until 5am) Londonbound single lane closures and a 50mph speed limit on the A2 between Whitehall Subway and Brenley Corner Roundabout, Kent. There will also be overnight entry slip closures at Upper Harbledown. The works involve recycling filter drain material and installing stable drains. There will be a fully signed diversion route.

M20 Signing works

From Monday 15 to Friday 19 September there will be an overnight (8pm to 5am) single lane closure of the dedicated Londonbound entry slip road at junction 7.

The works are to install signs at the side of the carriageway. The lane closure will be fully signed in advance.

A2 Road Marking works

There will be an overnight (8pm to 6am) lane one closure on the coastbound carriageway between the A2 junction with A2050 New Dover Road and the A2 junction with Coxhill Road from Monday 15 to Friday 19 September. There will also be an overnight (8pm to 6am) lane one closure on the Londonbound carriageway between A2 junction with Coxhill Road and the A2 juncton with A2050 New Dover Road from Monday 15 to Friday 19 September. The works are to renew white lines and cat’s eyes on the road. All lane closures will be fully signed in advance.

M23 Tree Removal

There will be a hardshoulder closure on the Londonbound and coastbound carriageway of the M23 between junction 7 and 11 from Monday 15 to Monday 22 September. The hardshoulder closures are to remove trees on the side of the carriageway and will be fully signed in advance.

A27 Southwick Tunnel Routine Maintenance

There will be a full overnight (8pm – 6am) closure of Southwick Tunnel on Friday 19 and Saturday 20 September for routine maintenance works. There will also be an overnight lane closure on the eastbound carriageway on Monday 22 September for the removal of equipment. All closures will be fully signed in advance and during the total closures will follow a fully signed diversion route.

A23 Tree Removal

There will be an overnight (8pm – 6am) lane one closure at various locations on the A23 from Brighton to Pease Pottage from Monday 22 to Friday 26 September. The works are to remove trees on the side of the carriageway. The lane closures will be fully signed in advance.

A23 Pyecombe Resurfacing

There will be a full overnight closure (8pm – 6am) of the southbound A23 between the A2300 Hickstead junction and the A273 Pyecombe junction from Monday 22 September until Friday 26 September. Whilst the overnight works are being carried out the A281 southbound entry slip to the A23 and the B2117 entry slip onto the A23 will both be closed. The works are to resurface the road and the closures will be fully signed in advance with a fully signed diversion route.

A259 Camber Bend Resurfacing Works

There will be an overnight (8pm – 6am) single lane closure on the A259 Royal Military Road between Winchelsea and Rye, East Sussex from Monday 22 to Friday 26 September. There will also be a temporary speed limit of 40mph to the approach of the works and traffic will be escorted past the works by convoy at 10mph with temporary two way traffic lights in operation. Work will be carried out on one carriageway before switching to the other carriageway. The works are to resurface the road and the lane closure and temporary traffic lights will be fully signed in advance.

Ongoing works:

A2 Bean to Cobham widening works

Works continue to widen the A2 to four lanes with hard shoulders in each direction between Bean to Cobham.

On the Londonbound carriageway there continues to be three narrow running lanes from Cobham junction to Pepperhill during the daytime with various lane closures at night between 8pm and 5am. On the coastbound carriageway there continues to be three narrow running lanes from the Ebbsfleet exit slip road to the Cobham exit slip road with various lane closures at night between 8pm and 5am.

A21 Flimwell to Hurst Green Safety Improvements

Works start on Monday 15 September to revise the road markings and replace existing road signs on the A21 London Road between Flimwell and Hurst Green in East Sussex. There will be temporary overnight (8pm to 6am) lane closures at various phases of the works with traffic being controlled by convoy vehicle at 10 mph through the works site.

A20 White Horse Hill Bridge works

Works continue to refurbish White Horse Hill overbridge to protect it from corrosion. Sections of the A20 between the A259 and the A260 will be closed overnight (8pm to 6am) from Monday 22 to Thursday 25 September and Monday 29 September to Thursday 2 October while work on the bridge and in the tunnel is carried out concurrently. Additionally, the coastbound A20 will be overnight lane closures on the Londonbound carriageway from Monday 15 to Friday 19 September. A fully signed diversion route will be in place for each closure.

A27 Tangmere Footbridge

Works continue to construct a new footbridge across the A27 at Tangmere and Boxgrove in West Sussex. From Tuesday 9 September to Friday 23 September the safety barrier along the bridge will be installed. During this time existing narrow lane running on the eastbound carriageway with a 40mph speed limit will remain in place whilst the works are taking place. It will also be necessary to close lane one of the eastbound carriageway for two nights between 8pm and 6am during the works.

M20 junction 11 – 12 widening works

Works continue to widen sections of the M20 between junctions 11 and 12 as well as entry slip roads at junction 11, junction 11a, and junction 12. The works are being carried out 24/7 with at least two lanes running at all times and hardshoulder running where necessary. There will also be an overnight closure of the entry and exit slip roads at junction 11 and junction 12 on some dates.

A21 Bridge Safety works

Works continue to replace the parapets on six bridges on the A21 around Tonbridge. Phase 2 is ongoing on the Londonbound carriageway at Lower Street, Leigh Road, Powder Mill Road, Lower Haysden Lane and Upper Haysden Lane bridges where two narrow lanes will remain open in the direction of the work, with temporary single lane closures overnight and a 50 mph speed limit in place day and night.

There will be an overnight closure of the Londonbound A21 on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 September to remove narrow lanes which will signal the completion of works. The closures will run from Vauxhall Lane to Morely’s Interchange, including the entry slip roads to the A21 at Vauxhall Lane and Quarry Hill. During this time fully signed diversions will be in place.

A259 King Offa Way Signalisation

Works on the signalisation upgrade to the traffic lights at the eastern end of A259 King Offa Way in East Sussex were suspended to avoid running into the summer holidays but will now resume on Monday 8 September. From this date the old traffic lights will be turned off and road users will be banned from making right turns at the junction where a fully signed diversion will be in place. For the safety of the workforce these restrictions will be in place 24 hours per day until works are completed.

A23 Pyecombe Fencing works

Works continue to replace a safety fence next to the southbound carriageway entry slip onto the A291 Dale Hill junction near Pyecombe. There continues to be narrow lane running withy a 40mph speed limit.

A27 Arundel Bridge works

Works to refurbish Arundel Railway Bridge began on Friday 12 September with the work taking place throughout September and October 2008. The A27 over the railway bridge will only be closed on the following weekends whilst works to the road surface and deck structure are carried out:

20.00 Friday 26 September until 06.00 Monday 29 September

20.00 Friday 10 October until 06.00 Monday 13 October

These are the scheduled closures but are weather dependant. If works are unable to be completed during any of these weekends, two contingency dates will be used which will be as follows:

20.00 Friday 17 October until 06.00 Monday 20 October

20.00 Friday 31 October until 06.00 Monday 03 November

A259 Brenzett Roundabout to A259 jct with Camber Road Drainage Works

Works continue overnight to carry out drainage surveys on both sides of the carriageway from the A2070 Brenzett Roundabout to the junction with Camber Bend near Rye, East Sussex. There continues to be overnight single lane closures from 8pm to 6am, Monday to Friday along 300 metre sections of one carriageway. During this time traffic is controlled by two way temporary traffic lights.

M2 Bridge Strengthening works

Work continues to strengthen Ruins Barn Farm bridge and Selling Road bridge over the M2 at Sittingbourne and Faversham in Kent. To limit delays to road users, work will take place on both bridges at the same time, and will be completed in two phases. The first phase started on Monday 8 September for nine weeks. The hard shoulder on both sides of the road will be closed around each bridge, with two narrow lanes remaining. The second phase of the work will start on Tuesday 11 November and will last for six weeks. Lane 2 on both sides of the road around each bridge will be closed to traffic, which will run on two narrow lanes in lane 1 and on the hard shoulder. This temporary road layout will be put in place during various temporary overnight lane closures around both bridges between 8pm and 5am from Friday 7 November to Monday 10 November. For the safety of road users and road workers a fully signed 50mph speed limit will be in place around both bridges throughout the work.

A27 Southerham to Beddingham Scheme

Work to improve the access to Glynde Village at the A27 Glynde Junction will continue until October. A 40mph speed limit will remain in place on the A27 until the works are complete.
