South West – Weekly round up of road works in Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Bristol

A303 Wylye, Wiltshire

We will be carrying out essential white lining work, replacing cats-eyes and undertaking carriageway surveys on the A303 between Wylye and Longbarrow Roundabout for 5 nights commencing Monday 29th September, subject to weather conditions, from 21:00 to 05:00 hrs.

To complete the scheme safely we need to close both the A303 overnight between the junction with the A36 and the junction with the A360, and the eastbound entry slip roads at the Wylye junction.

Through-traffic will need to use the following diversion route:

Eastbound traffic will be diverted off the A303 at Wylye, to travel southbound along the A36 to Salisbury. It will then travel northbound along the A360 to Longbarrow Roundabout and re-join the A303.

Westbound traffic will be diverted off the A303 at Longbarrow Roundabout, to travel southbound on the A360 to Salisbury. It will then travel northbound on the A36, to rejoin the A303 at Wylye.

During the work we will maintain access for residents, businesses and their customers and emergency services where necessary.

M48 Severn Bridge closure

The M48 Severn Bridge will be closed in both directions from 21.30 hrs on Friday 3 October until 21.00 hrs on Sunday 5 October. The closure is to move gantries currently being used to install a dehumidification on the cables.

M5 J13 to J14 Gloucestershire – Coaley Cambridge Overbridge

Work to install concrete barriers to improve protection for the bridge piers will commence on 29 September for 4 weeks. Traffic Management on the M5 will involve 3 lanes narrow running on both the north and south bound carriageways with a 50mph speed restriction.

M5 Avonmouth Bridge

Major resurfacing and waterproofing work started on the southbound carriageway of the M5 Avonmouth Bridge overnight on 2 September and will continue until January.

During the work there will be narrow lanes and a 50 mph speed limit controlled by speed cameras. At times there will be a contraflow. Three lanes will remain open in each direction throughout the work.

A40 Over to Highnam (near Gloucester)

A 26-week scheme to reconstruct both carriageways and to build a new bus lane started in May. The scheme also includes renewing drainage, replacing lighting columns, new cabling and safety barriers.

A contraflow has been installed with one lane in each direction until completion of the work in November. Temporary traffic signals have been installed on Over roundabout to improve traffic flow onto the A417.

The programme of ongoing overnight works will continue next week in several areas:

Commencing on the 25 September, there will also be approximately 4 nights of temporary traffic signals within the contraflow, in order to install a concrete barrier on the eastbound carriageway. This is an unusual measure, but will avoid a total closure of the road as would normally be required for this type of operation. We would ask motorists using the A40 overnight during this time to take particular care through the traffic management.

A4 Avonmouth – work on St Brendans and St Andrews roundabouts

Due to the continued development of Cabot Park Distribution Park, improvements to St Brendans and St Andrews roundabouts are being carried out.

The improvements include widening of the carriageway approaches to the two roundabouts to enable increased turning space for large goods vehicles, and the signalisation of the roundabouts to facilitate improved traffic flow.

Work will continue until mid October, during which time there will be 24-hour lane closures in place at various locations and a temporary limit of 30mph. A number of full overnight closures of the roundabouts will be required during late September for the erection of overhead gantries.

A419 Blunsdon near Swindon

There are narrow lanes and 40 mph speed restrictions on the A419 near Swindon as part of the construction of the Blunsdon Bypass. Northbound traffic is now using the new bypass while southbound traffic continues to use the existing A419 through Blunsdon.
