The fifth auction of cherished number plates of 2008 was held at the Haycock Hotel, Peterborough on the 24th,25th and 26th of September 2008. The auction was organised by Premier Motor Auctions on behalf of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority. In total, bids were more or less the same as the last auction at £3,120,100 net of VAT, auctioneer’s commission and transfer fee.

Top selling registration number sold was 6B, the first single letter single number registration to be included in such an auction for some time. 6B brought a staggering £102,200 on the hammer and may seem expensive until you know F1 brought £440,000 recently. Next highest was OWN 1T which brought £26,200. BOR 11S which had been tipped for the new Mayor of London only brought £5400.

There were 238 registrations unsold. This is broadly in line with the previous auction which is surprising considering the current economic downturn seems to be worsening.

The next auction is due to take place on the 19th, 20th and 21st of November at Tankersley Manor, Barnsley, South Yorkshire. Catalogues can be downloaded from the DVLA sale of marks website. You must register to be eligible to bid.
