A series of traffic surveys taking place on major routes across Hull is nearly complete, the Highways Agency announced today.

So far over 57,000 drivers have taken part in the six-week programme of roadside surveys that aim to find out information about drivers’ journeys. Final surveys will take place next week (w/c October 6th)

The surveys, which involve selecting drivers at random to ask brief questions about their journey origins and destinations, will provide an up-to-date picture of traffic patterns across the city. The information will help the Highways Agency to assess options for the proposed Castle Street improvement scheme. The information will also be shared with Hull City Council and East Riding Council to help with general transport planning.

Highways Agency project manager Jimmy Holmes said:

“The Highways Agency is finding out about drivers and their journeys in order to get an up to date picture to help our decision making. We would like to thank all the drivers who have taken part and all those who have taken the trouble to complete and return the postcard questionnaires.
“The information provided is invaluable in helping us assess options for the proposed Castle Street improvements and for wider transport planning across the city.

“We have carried out surveys on a number of routes at different times of the day, including peak times. We have worked very closely with our contractors to reduce the impact of delays during the survey, particularly at rush hour. We apologise to drivers if they have experienced delays, but we hope people will understand the value of the information we have been gathering.

“We are now in the final phase of the roadside surveys and once again would like to thank all those who have taken part so far.”

A second phase of surveys will take place later this year when bus and train passengers will be asked brief questions about their journeys. Cyclists and pedestrians will also be counted at key locations.
