South East – Weekly summary of roadworks in Kent and Sussex – 08/10/2008

A2 Ebbsfleet Coastbound – Weekend Closure
The coastbound A2 will be closed at the Ebbsfleet interchange from 9pm on Friday 10 October until 5am Monday 13 October while work is carried out to resurface and waterproof the road.

During this time traffic will be diverted via the exit slip road to Ebbsfleet Eastern Roundabout and across the interchange before rejoining the coastbound carriageway.

The closure and diversion will be fully signed in advance. Drivers are advised to plan their journey, and allow extra time if they are using this route this weekend.

A2 Thannington Coastbound
There will be an overnight (8pm – 6am) single lane with a 50mph temporary speed limit on the coastbound carriageway of the A2 at Thannington near Canterbury from Thursday 2 October to Saturday 11 October. While the closure is in place there will also be a temporary closure of the entry slip road to the A2. The work is being carried out to resurface the road and renew road markings. The lane closure and slip road closure will be fully signed in advance with a fully signed diversion route.

A2 Thannington Londonbound
There will be an overnight (8pm – 6am) lane one closure with a 50mph temporary speed limit on the Londonbound carriageway of the A2 at Thannington near Canterbury from Monday 13 to Thursday 23 October. While the closure is in place there will also be a temporary closure of the Londonbound exit slip road for A28 Thannington Road. The work is being carried out to resurface the road and renew the road markings. The lane closure and slip road closure will be fully signed in advance with a fully signed diversion route.

A2 Brenley Corner to Harbledown Street Light Replacement
There will be various overnight (8pm – 6am) lane closures on the Londonbound and coastbound carriageways from Monday 6 October to Saturday 18 October between Brenley Corner and Harbledown near Canterbury while work is carried out to replace street lights. The lane closures will be fully signed in advance.

A21 Flimwell Crossroads to Kent Boundary Resurfacing
There will be an overnight (8pm – 6am) single lane closure of either the northbound or southbound carriageway at any one time from Wednesday 8 October to Friday 10 October and again on Monday 13 October.

There will be a 40mph speed limit in place on approach to the work with traffic controlled by two way traffic lights and escorted past the work in convoy at 10mph. The work is being carried out to resurface the road and replace the road markings. The lane closures and speed limit will be fully signed in advance.

A27 Lewes Bypass Resurfacing
There will be various overnight (8pm – 6am) lane one and lane two closures with temporary traffic lights on the eastbound carriageway of the A27 from Monday 13 October to Monday 20 October. The lane closures will affect sections of road between Southerham Roundabout and Ashcombe Roundabout near Lewes, East Sussex. There will also be a temporary speed limit of 40mph approaching the work and traffic will be led through the work at 10mph by convoy vehicle. The work is being carried out to renew road markings and clean gullies at the side of the road. The lane closures and speed limit will be fully signed in advance.

A27 Hammerpot Weather station
There will be an overnight (8pm – 6am) lane one closure on the eastbound carriageway of the A27 near Hammerpot, West Sussex from Monday 13 October to Saturday 18 October. The work is being carried out to install a new weather station at the side of the road. The lane closure will be fully signed in advance.

A27 Southwick Tunnel Routine Maintenance
There will be a full overnight (8pm – 6am) closure of Southwick Tunnel on Friday 17 and Saturday 18 October for routine maintenance work. There will also be an overnight lane closure on the eastbound carriageway on Monday 22 September for the removal of equipment. All closures will be fully signed in advance and during the total closures traffic will follow a fully signed diversion route.

M20 Junction 6
There will be an overnight closure (9pm – 5am) of the dedicated entry slip road for junction 6 of the coastbound carriageway from Monday 6 to Friday 10 October. The work is being carried out to install signs at the side of the road. The slip closure will be signed in advance with a fully signed diversion route in place.

M20 Junction 6
There will be an overnight closure (9pm – 5am) of the dedicated entry slip for junction 6 of the coastbound carriageway from Monday 13 to Wednesday 15 October. There will then be an overnight closure of the coastbound exit slip road from junction 6 on Thursday 16 and Friday 17 October. The work is being carried out to install signs at the side of the road. The slip closure will be signed in advance with a fully signed diversion route in place.

Ongoing work:

A2 Bean to Cobham widening work
Work to widen the A2 to four lanes with hard shoulders in each direction between Bean to Cobham continues this week. Three narrow lanes remain open on the Londonbound carriageway from Cobham junction to Pepperhill during the day with various lane closures at night between 8pm and 5am.

On the coastbound carriageway three narrow lanes remain open from the Ebbsfleet exit slip road to the Cobham exit slip road with various lane closures at night between 8pm and 5am.

A21 Flimwell to Hurst Green Safety Improvements
Work started on Monday 15 September to revise the road markings and replace existing road signs on the A21 London Road between Flimwell and Hurst Green in East Sussex. There will be temporary overnight (8pm to 6am) lane closures at various phases of the work with traffic being controlled by convoy vehicle at 10 mph through the work site.

A27 Arundel Bridge work
Work to refurbish Arundel Railway Bridge began on Friday 12 September with work taking place throughout September and October 2008. The A27 over the railway bridge will only be closed on the following weekend while work to the road surface and deck structure of the bridge is carried out:

8pm Friday 10 October until 6am Monday 13 October

This is a scheduled closure and is weather dependant. If work is unable to be completed during this weekend, two contingency dates will be used which will be as follows:

8pm Friday 17 October until 6am Monday 20 October
8pm Friday 31 October until 6am Monday 03 November

A259 Brenzett Roundabout to Camber Road Drainage Work
Work continues overnight to carry out drainage surveys on both sides of the carriageway from the A2070 Brenzett Roundabout to the junction with Camber Bend near Rye, East Sussex. Overnight single lane closures continue from 8pm to 6am, Monday to Friday along 300 metre sections of one carriageway. During this time traffic is controlled by two way temporary traffic lights.

M2 Bridge Strengthening Work
Work to strengthen Ruins Barn Farm bridge and Selling Road bridge over the M2 at Sittingbourne and Faversham in Kent continues this week. To limit delays to road users, works will take place on both bridges at the same time, and will be completed in two phases.

The first phase started on Monday 8 September for nine weeks. The hard shoulder on both sides of the road will be closed around each bridge, with two narrow lanes remaining.

The second phase of the work will start on Tuesday 11 November and will last for six weeks. Lane 2 on both sides of the road around each bridge will be closed to traffic, which will run on two narrow lanes in lane 1 and on the hard shoulder. This temporary road layout will be put in place during various temporary overnight lane closures around both bridges between 8pm and 5am from Friday 7 November to Monday 10 November.

For the safety of road users and road workers a fully signed 50mph speed limit will be in place around both bridges throughout the work site.

A27 Southerham to Beddingham – Glynde Junction
Work continues until the end of October to complete the improvement scheme at this junction. There is a 40mph limit for the safety of drivers and the workforce. Drivers should expect some slight delays.

A21 Tonbridge Relining
Work to replace the road markings and cats eyes on the A21 between Vauxhall Lane and Kippings Cross near Tonbridge in Kent continues this week. To minimise disruption the work is being carried out overnight between 8pm and 6am during which times various single lane closures will be in place as well as a temporary overnight closure of the Londonbound carriageway between the A228 Pembury Road interchange and Longfield Road Roundabout. There will also be a temporary overnight closure of the coastbound Pembury Road entry slip, Londonbound Pembury Road exit slip, coastbound Vauxhall Lane entry slip, Londonbound Vauxhall Lane exit slip and Hastings Road, all at separate times. All temporary closures will be signed in advance with a fully signed diversion route in place which is available from http://www.highways.gov.uk/roads/projects/20306.aspx
