M62 Balkholme to Gilberdyke major road maintenance scheme

The Highways Agency will begin a major road maintenance scheme on a 3.8km (2.4 miles) section of the M62 between Balkholme to Gilberdyke on Monday 27 October.

The work will take place 3.5km east of Junction 37 (Howden Interchange) to 5.5km west of Junction 38 (North Cave Interchange) in East Yorkshire.

The scheme will include overlaying the existing concrete carriageway with low noise surfacing, improving drainage and providing new concrete and steel safety barriers. Addle Lane Bridge will also be replaced.

The first phase of the works includes the replacement of the safety barriers in the central reserve. During this work, lanes two and three will be closed on both the east and westbound carriageways until Christmas. Drivers will use the hard shoulder and lane one travelling both east and westbound. This work will take place between 07:00 and 18:00, seven days a week.

From January to February 2009, there will be a full closure of the eastbound carriageway, with traffic running in contraflow, providing two lanes in each direction on the westbound carriageway.

From February to March 2009, there will be a full closure of the westbound carriageway, with traffic running in contraflow, providing two lanes in each direction on the eastbound carriageway.

During March 2009 there will be various closures on both carriageways to enable the completion of the scheme. Between January and March 2009 work will take place day and night. The work is due to be completed by 24 March 2009.

A 50mph speed limit will operate for the duration of the works and will be enforced by average speed measurement cameras. A free recovery service for broken down vehicles will operate throughout the works.

Highways Agency project manager Steven Wright said: “Surfacing the concrete carriageway will improve the road surface and reduce road noise to both drivers and nearby residents. The work will also improve the barriers in both the central reserve and on the verges. The new Addle Lane overbridge will ensure the bridleway and road access is maintained between Balkholme and Saltmarshe Grange “.
