Major maintenance scheme on A12 at Kelvedon, Essex
A £6.74 million major maintenance scheme to refurbish a stretch of the A12 at Kelvedon in Essex begins on Thursday, 27 November.
The carriageway between Rivenhall End and Highfields Overbridge on the Kelvedon Bypass will be strengthened and surfaced with noise reducing asphalt which will provide a smoother, safer and quieter road surface. Safety will be improved with the construction of nearside and offside hardstrips, replacement and upgrade of street lighting, and major drainage improvements. Carriageways signs and roadmarkings will also be upgraded. Facilities for non-motorised road users will be improved, and the new footway and footway / cycleway will be protected by safety barrier.
Julian O’Dell, project manager for the Highways Agency, said:
“This stretch of the A12 has reached the end of its life. The work to strengthen and refurbish the carriageway will help road users make their journeys safely and reliably on a quieter, smoother road surface and nearby residents will also benefit from the reduced noise.
“During the works, traffic is requested to keep to the 50mph speed limit for the safety of the workforce. We will keep delays to a minimum by keeping two lanes of traffic open in both directions during daytime hours.”
The work will take place 24 hours a day, except for the Christmas and New Year holiday period, and is expected to be completed in Spring 2009. Lane closures will be in place overnight and a 50mph speed limit will be in force 24 hours a day for the duration of the works.
During the works there will be slip road closures at J23 A12/B1024 Kelvedon (south) Interchange with clearly signed diversions as follows:
When the southbound entry slip road is closed, traffic will be diverted via the B1024, A12 northbound, J25 A12/A120 Marks Tey Interchange, and A12 southbound.
When the northbound exit slip road is closed, traffic will be diverted via A12 northbound, J25 A12/A120 Marks Tey Interchange, A12 southbound, J24 A12/B1024 Kelvedon (north) Interchange, and B1024. Advance notice of these slip road closures will be provided.
During the works, a free vehicle recovery service will in operation and a CCTV camera system, covering the site extents and approaches, will be in operation to assist with dealing with breakdowns and incidents. The speed limit restriction will be enforced using average speed check cameras.
