A1 at Wetherby to close overnight for further bridge demolition work

6PM ON SATURDAY 6 DECEMBER TO 10AM ON SUNDAY 7 DECEMBER

The Highways Agency is reminding motorists that the A1 at Wetherby, West Yorkshire, will again be closed overnight in both directions this weekend (6-7 December) to allow work to continue on the safe demolition of the disused Walton Road bridge.

The work is part of the A1(M) upgrade project between Bramham and Wetherby.

The A1 will be closed between the Grange Moor and Walton Road junctions from 6pm on Saturday 6 December until 10am on Sunday 7 December to allow the eastern side span of the bridge to be taken down. The road was also closed last weekend so that the central span could be removed.

During the closure, signed diversion routes will be in place:

* Northbound traffic will exit the A1 at the A659 Grange Moor junction to use the new local access road and the A58, before re-joining the A1 at Walton Road.
* Southbound traffic will follow the same diversion in the opposite direction, exiting the A1 via a temporary link road at Walton Road and re-joining the A1 at Grange Moor.

If the demolition work this weekend is delayed by weather conditions, it is possible that a third closure of the A1 will be required on the following weekend, from Saturday 13 December to Sunday 14 December.

A replacement bridge over the A1 at Walton Road, for which bridge beams were installed in early October, was opened to traffic last week.

Highways Agency project manager Alec Briggs said:

“This is the second stage of the demolition work, which is being carried out in phases in order to limit any delays to the travelling public. It is also being done overnight, when traffic flows are lower, and signed diversions will be in place throughout.

“Throughout the works, we do not anticipate any significant delays. However, we advise drivers to allow extra time for their journeys and we apologise for any inconvenience the work may cause.”
