Drivers to benefit from M62 safety fencing and resurfacing work

The Highways Agency will begin work along the M62 on Thursday 8 January to erect new safety fencing and resurface the carriageway. This work will provide safer journeys for drivers travelling between Junction 22 (Rishworth Moor) and Junction 24 (Ainley Top).

The work will improve over 3 miles (5 km) of safety fencing along the verges between Junction 22 and Junction 23 (Outlane), and resurface sections of the carriageway at Junction 24.

The existing safety fence along the eastbound verge and part of the westbound verge will be replaced, and new fencing installed on some sections where there currently is none. Where the carriageway is being resurfaced the white lining and road-studs will also be replaced.

During the work there will be various lane and hard shoulder closures in place on both the east and westbound carriageways. In order that the works can be carried out safely, it will also be necessary to close the westbound exit slip road at Junction 24 for one night. Advance notice will be given prior to the closure and a fully signed diversion route will be in place.

In order to minimise the disruption to drivers the works will take place between 20:00 and 06:00 when traffic flows are lighter. The work will be completed by mid February.

Highways Agency project manager, Steven Wright, said: “The work will provide safer journeys for travellers along this stretch of the M62. As well as providing new safety barriers and improving existing ones, the carriageway will also be resurfaced and new road studs and lining put in place”.

Moderate delays are expected and drivers are advised to allow extra time and to plan their journeys. Drivers can get up-to-the-minute travel information visiting http://www.highways.gov.uk or by tuning into the Highways Agency’s Traffic Radio, available on DAB digital radio and at http://www.trafficradio.org.uk.
