£1.15m drainage improvement on the A49 in shropshire
The Highways Agency will carry out a major drainage scheme on the A49 at Dorrington, near Shrewsbury. The carriageway will be resurfaced at the same time, as it has reached the end of its serviceable life.
The work is expected to start on 2 February 2009 and will continue for about three months. The work will take place from just north of Limes Paddock to the Netley / Crossbrook Bridge south of the village, on both carriageways.
All work on the section of A49 between Gadds (the butchers) and the north end of the village will be carried out during the day between 9.30am and 8.00pm, to avoid the morning peak-hour flow and minimise noise to adjacent properties overnight. Traffic signals and convoy running will be used to take traffic safely past the work site, with suitable arrangements made for access to side roads and properties.
The drainage work on the A49 south of Gadds (the butchers) will also be carried out during the day between 9.30am and 8.00pm, but for the safety of road users and the work force, this section of the A49 will be resurfaced overnight. The A49 will be closed in both directions overnight between 9.00pm and 6.00am when traffic flows are lower. A clearly signed diversion route will be in place – B4368 from Craven Arms to Morville; A458 Morville to A5 Shrewsbury Bypass to A5/A49 Bayleys Island – and vice versa. Southbound vehicles to Church Stretton will use the B4371 from Much Wenlock.
A public exhibition with details about the work, the traffic management and diversion routes will be held on Wednesday 14 January 2009 in Dorrington Village Hall from 3.30pm until 8.00pm.
Highways Agency Project Sponsor, Sarah Churchill, said:
“This is essential work to maintain the road surface and drainage system. We are working to minimise the disruption to local residents and motorists. When completed, the new surface and drainage system will reduce the need for unplanned maintenance and improve safety during times of heavy rainfall. Access to businesses will be kept open at all times with alternative parking areas provided as necessary. Access from the A49 to local side roads and properties will also be kept open.”
