New monitoring equipment and electronic signs will be installed on the A38 between Plymouth and Ivybridge to improve safety along the route.

CCTV cameras linked to the Highways Agency control room in Exeter will help the agency spot any incidents along the road and new electronic message signs will give drivers advance warning of any problems.

Highways Agency Route Performance Manager, Nigel Dyson, said: “By monitoring traffic flows we will be able to inform drivers of incidents and road conditions as they develop, increasing safety and reducing the chances of congestion.”

Work on the installation will start around Monday 12 January and is expected to be completed by the end of March. Most of the work on the main carriageways will be completed between 8pm and 6am to avoid disruption to traffic. Works on slip roads will be completed during daylight hours.

The Voss Farm junction on the A38 westbound carriageway will be closed for six weeks from 12 January to allow the works to take place. Local traffic will be diverted over the bridge, past the Lyneham Inn to the Deep Lane junction. Access to and from homes and industrial units at Battisford will be maintained via the local minor roads but with no access to or from the westbound A38.
