Lancashire safety days for Traffic Officers
Driving in poor weather will be the theme of two safety days being staged at motorway service stations in Lancashire at the weekend.
The events have been organised by Samlesbury-based Highways Agency Traffic Officers who will be joined by officers from Lancashire Police and the Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety.
The day-long events are being staged at Forton Services on Saturday (January 17) and at Charnock Richard on Sunday (January 18).
They are being run as a way of informing travellers about the role of Highways Agency Traffic Officers and the police and to advise on safer motorway driving – with driving in difficult weather a particular theme of the events.
Linda Sanderson, Communications Manager for Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety, said, “Motorways are statistically much safer than other roads, but when an accident does happen the results can be catastrophic. When the weather is bad with reduced visibility and the risk of skidding due to surface water or ice and snow, it really does pay to slow right down. It is much better to get there late, than not at all.”
Officers will be on hand to chat to drivers about journey planning and vehicle preparation for bad weather and will also be giving out free copies of Think Ahead, Move Ahead – the Highways Agency’s popular glove box atlas and journey-planning guide.
Highways Agency Traffic Officer David Nash who has organised the event said, “We are still only mid-winter but drivers have already had to face some very poor weather in the region – especially over the last two or three weeks. These two events will be a timely opportunity for ourselves, the police and Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety to give some topical advice on safer driving.”
Forton Services is between junction 32 and 33 of the M6 and the event is being held within the northbound services area between 10am and 4pm.
Charnock Richard Services is between junction 27 and 28 of the M6 and that event is being held within the northbound services area between 10am and 4pm.
