Latest phase of A64 cycleway scheme begins near Malton, North Yorkshire
Cyclists and pedestrians will benefit from improved safety when the Highways Agency begins the latest stage of a scheme to create a dedicated cycleway along the A64 between York and Scarborough.
The £420,000 programme to upgrade 3km of footway on the A64 near Malton, North Yorkshire, begins on Monday 19 January. The existing footway between Knapton and West Heslerton will be widened, and signing, lining and kerbing works will be carried out to create a combined cycleway and footway on the eastbound verge.
Work will take place outside of peak hours, between 9.30am and 3.30pm, and overnight between 8pm and 6am, when traffic flows are lower. Parts of the eastbound lane will be closed during the works, but temporary traffic lights will be in operation and delays are expected to be slight. Use of the footpaths will also be restricted, but a walkway will be provided for pedestrians. The work will be completed by April 2009.
Andrew Brown, project manager with the Highways Agency, said: “Once completed, this scheme will improve facilities along the A64 and increase safety for both pedestrians and cyclists. We have previously carried out similar work on other stretches of the A64, and the eventual aim is to create a combined cycleway and footpath along the majority of the A64 between York and Scarborough.
“We expect disruption to road-users to be minimal while work is ongoing, and the majority of the work will take place during off-peak hours, when traffic is at its quietest.”
