East of England roadworks update: Mon 27 April – Sun 3 May 2009

NEW WORK:
A421 (BEDFORD) – M1 J13
Major construction work to build the new eight-mile dual carriageway on the north west side of the existing A421 between M1 J13 and Bedford Southern Bypass got underway on Thursday 19 February. Motorists are being warned to expect some disruption to their journeys until the improvements are completed in December 2010.

New work:
M1 J13 Bridge Construction: Overnight slip road closures will take place from Tuesday 28 April to allow for the construction of a new bridge over the M1 and a new roundabout on the A421 at Junction 13. Closure times as follows:
11pm – 5am Monday – Thursday
11pm – 7 am Friday
9pm – 9am Saturday
10pm – 5am Sunday.
These overnight slip road closures will be in place until the scheme is completed in December 2010, although no more than two slip roads will be closed on any one night. Advance warning signs will be displayed warning drivers of planned closures and diversion routes will be clearly signposted.
Ongoing work:
A temporary 50mph speed restriction will be in place on the M1. Lane closures will be in operation but generally three lanes will be in use as the hard shoulder is being used as an additional lane. Approximately 1.25 (2km) of the M1 either side of J13 will be affected and these restrictions will apply 24 hours a day until the scheme is completed.
A421 Speed Restrictions: There will be 40mph speed restrictions in place 24 hours-a-day.
Partial closure of A421/B530 Roundabout (known locally as the Interchange Retail Park roundabout): Partially closed from Tuesday 24 March with no right turns to or from the westbound carriageway of the A421. Diversion routes will be clearly signed.
Work to upgrade A6 Roundabouts: Work to convert three roundabouts on the A6 into traffic light controlled junctions will be taking place on the Progress Park roundabout, the Cowbridge roundabout and the Elstow roundabout until Autumn 2009. Lane restrictions and a temporary 30 mph speed limit will be in place to ensure the safety of the workforce.

A5 MILTON KEYNES IMPROVEMENT WORK
Work to improve safety and repair the carriageway on the A5 between Stony Stratford and the Portway Roundabout (A509/A5) will begin on Friday 1 May. Work will include resurfacing as well as repairs to the bridges and will take place overnight on weekdays and at weekends until August. From Friday 1 May concrete repairs will be carried out over five weekends on the southbound carriageway between Old Stratford and Portway Roundabout. The work will take place between 10pm and 6am with closures on the southbound carriageway: on Friday night only traffic will diverted via Queen Eleanor Street and Watling Street to Loughton Roundabout; on Saturday and Sunday nights via Abbey Hill roundabout to Monks Way and Watling Street. There will be some weekend daytime closures of lanes 1 and 2. Bridge repair work will begin on Tuesday May 5 with overnight lane closures on Dansteed Way.

ONGOING WORK:

A120 MARKS TEY NEW PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS
Work on two new Puffin crossings which will improve pedestrian access to local amenities started on Monday 23 February near the A120 Marks Tey roundabout and Prince of Wales roundabout. Work is taking place overnight between 8pm and 6am, with temporary traffic signals, although there may be some daytime offpeak working between 9.30am and 3.30pm. Improvements to pedestrian footpaths in the area will also be carried out as part of the scheme. The work is due for completion by 1 May.

A47 ROUNDABOUT IMPROVEMENTS NEAR PETERBOROUGH
Work to complete the road markings as part of the scheme to install new traffic signals at the Thomas Cook Interchange (A47 Junction 15/A1260 Nene Parkway) will be carried out overnight on Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 April between 8pm and 6am. There will be some slip road closures with clearly signed diversions in place on Monday night only.

A47 PASTON INTERCHANGE, NEAR PETERBOROUGH
Essential maintenance work to the bridges on the A47/A15 Paston Interchange started on Wednesday 15 April as part of a scheme to improve the A1073 between Spalding and Eye. The Highways Agency is taking advantage of Lincolnshire County Council’s improvement scheme to carry out the bridge work which will include replacing the waterproof layer and some surfacing to the north bridge, as well as joint replacement and kerb drainage. Work will take place seven days a week from 7am until 7pm for 12 weeks until 8 July. The eastbound bridge deck carriageway will be fully closed for the first five weeks, followed by seven weeks of single-lane working. The westbound carriageway will be restricted to a single lane for the full twelve weeks. A clearly signed diversion via the A15 will be in place.
