M6 junction 10a-11 overnight closures tonight timing changed to minimise disruption to football fans

The Highways Agency will close sections of the M6 between Junction 10a (Essington) and Junction 12 (Cannock North) tonight, in order to install new gantries. The Agency has put back the timing of the closures so as to minimise disruption to football fans travelling back from the Champions League semi-final at Old Trafford.

Highways Agency Project Manager Mark Worrallo said: “These important works have been planned for some months, but we have decided to hold back the closure by at least an hour in order to let the football traffic clear. We will monitor the level of traffic before making a final decision on the precise timing of the closure. Fully signed diversion routes will be in place throughout the periods of closure.”

The new gantries will carry message signs to operate in conjunction with the Motorway Incident Detection and Automatic Signalling (MIDAS) system recently installed on this section of the M6, which set signals automatically when traffic queues form. Other works and maintenance will also be carried out at this time to minimise future disruption.

DIVERSION ROUTES

M6 Northbound Junction 10a to 12

The M6 northbound carriageway will be closed completely from 10.00pm on Wednesday 29th April to 06.00am on Thursday 30th April 2009. There will be a clearly signposted diversion route from Junction 10a along the M54 to Junction 2, then along the A449 to the A5 roundabout, then along the A5 to join the M6 at Junction 12.

M6 Southbound Junction 11 to 10a

The M6 southbound carriageway will be closed completely from 01:00am (or later, subject to traffic conditions) on Wednesday 29th April to 04.00am on Thursday 30th April 2009. There will be a clearly signposted diversion route from Junction 11, along the A460 to Junction 1 of the M54, then along the M54 to join the M6 at Junction 10a.

The Southbound closure will start with Lane 1 Running (Lanes 3 & 2 closed). The full carriageway closure will be implemented when the gantry is being lifted into place. On completion of lifting activities Lane 1 Running will be reinstated on the southbound carriageway.

If for any reason the installation of the gantry cannot be carried out tonight, it will be rescheduled for the night of Wednesday 6th May 2009.
