Maintenance scheme on the A38 between Wrangaton and Ivybridge

A £1.4 million reconstruction scheme on a two-and-a-half mile stretch of the A38 between Wrangaton and Ivybridge, will begin on 11 May.

The work on the westbound carriageway will also require an eastbound lane closure and will include replacement of the road surface, installation of new safety barriers, inspection and maintenance of drainage and construction of a new concrete drainage channel and new road signs.

The work is due to be completed by the end of July 2009 and will take place at night-time (from 8pm to 6am Sundays to Thursdays) to reduce inconvenience to drivers.

A temporary 50mph speed limit will be in place throughout the works for the safety of roadusers and the workforce and will be enforced by average speed safety cameras. This limit will be in place 24 hours a day because it will not be possible to bring the carriageway up to full standard during, although all lanes will be open to traffic during the daytime.

Highways Agency project manager, Lynton Cocks, said: “This scheme will provide a better road surface for motorists along with improved safety and better drainage.

“This stretch of road was built in 1973 and now needs substantial maintenance work. Inconvenience to drivers will be kept to a minimum as most of the project is being carried out at night.”

Although there will be no need for traffic diversions during the work, cyclists will be diverted off the A38 through Ivybridge during the scheme.
