A5 roadworks at Markyate

The Highways Agency will carry out resurfacing and other work on the A5 between River Hill, Flamstead, and Hicks Road, Markyate from Tuesday 26 May to Sunday 21 June 2009.

The works will affect overnight traffic on both carriageways of a 1.5 mile stretch of the A5 between Dunstable and the M1 Junction 9.

At the same time as the resurfacing is taking place, drains and gullies will also be cleaned and road signs will be replaced.

All the works will be carried out overnight. During the week, the works will be in place between 20.00 and 06.00 and on Friday and Saturday nights between 20.00 and 09.00.

When necessary, the Highways Agency will use a well signed diversion route.

The diversion will direct road users wishing to travel northbound on the A5 onto the M1 to exit at Junction 11 at Luton. Traffic will then be directed westbound on the A505 to rejoin the A5 at Dunstable. Traffic travelling southbound will follow the same route but in the opposite direction.

To promote safety, there will also be A5 lane closures, side road closures, temporary traffic lights and a 40 mph speed limit through the works. At times, traffic will be convoyed through roadworks at 10 mph.

A mandatory diversion will be in place for vehicles exceeding 6′ 6″ at all times for the duration of the works. Wide vehicles will be instructed to follow the same diversion route as described above.
