Car production down 55 per cent

Car more than halved in April, the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show.

Car production fell sharply through April, down 55.3 per cent, compared to the same month last year.
April represents a highly important time of year for the motor industry, when the New Year registration plates come out and should see a big increase in demand for cars, stimulating the production sector. However, April car sales were also down 24 per cent.

vehicle production suffered even more, falling by 65.2 per cent in the month.

While the say that the launch of the UK incentive scheme this week and similar schemes in place in other European markets should help the improve sales volumes, the association expects that recovery will be protracted.

“With the scrappage incentive scheme fully operational, industry is optimistic about the positive  impact this will have on the market and on UK production facilities,” said Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive. “Despite the current difficulties, the UK must prepare for the return of global growth and government support for the industry is an essential part of the process.”
