Estimates Day – Debate on Road Safety
The Transport Committee’s report on Ending the Scandal of Complacency: Road Safety beyond 2010 (HC 460) will be debated in the chamber of the House of Commons today – July 2 – from around 3pm
Commenting on the decision, Chairman of the Transport Committee Louise Ellman MP said "Over 2,500 people die every year on our roads, including far too many young people. The Government acknowledged recently in its response to our report the ‘massive social and economic costs’ of this major public health challenge. We now need to debate what needs to be done by the government to restore Britain’s position as a world leader in road safety."
The Committee’s Report, published on October 29, 2008, called for a much bolder strategy to address road safety within which local authorities be given more powers to introduce 20mph speed limits, increased enforcement to tackle drink-driving and the creation of a road safety commission. MPs remain particularly concerned about the high accident rates among male drivers, younger drivers and on rural roads. They also hold deep concern about the continuing links between poverty and road deaths.
