All new Jaguar XJ revealed
One of the most eagerly anticipated new car launches of 2009 happened in London on Thursday 9th July, with Jay Leno on hand to reveal the all new Jaguar XJ at the Saatchi Gallery in Chelsea.
Sharing obvious styling cues with stable mates the XF and to a lesser extent the XK the XJ marries coupé looks with comparable levels of space to a saloon.
Jaguar Cars Managing Director, Mike O’Driscoll, commented: “These are truly exciting times for us at Jaguar. The new XJ is truly beautiful, exhilarating to drive, and with its bold, enlightened approach to design, it meets the challenges of our fast-changing world. It re-imagines the ultimate sporting luxury car.”
Jaguar has opened the order book for the car from today, with first deliveries predicted for early 2010, prices start at £52,500 for the standard wheelbase 3.0-litre V6 diesel luxury rising to £88,000 for the long wheel base, 5.0-litre s/c V8 petrol supersport.
One of the biggest design statements on the new car is the panoramic glass roof, standard on all models, which enhances the amount of light and space in the cabin of the car; the sweeping roofline and grille is pure Jaguar design and the new XJ doesn’t just look streamlined; in tests the car scored a drag coefficient of only 0.29, making it the most aerodynamic Jaguar ever (along with the XF saloon).

Available with Jaguar’s new 3.0 litre AJ-V6D Gen III diesel engine, with twin sequential turbocharges, the diesel offers excellent fuel economy of 40.1mpg on the combined cycle and impressive CO2 emissions of 184g/km. Performance is also compelling with the 3.0 litre diesel as it no-doubt gracefully slices through the air from 0-62mph in 6.4 seconds. As with all new Jaguar cars, top speed is restricted to 155mph.
The range topping XJ has the 510ps 5.0-litre AJ-V8 Gen III which provides the luxury saloon with a high level of performance – 0-62mph is hit in only 4.9 seconds.
Ride and handling of the car has seen technology pioneered on the fearsome duo of the XFR and XKR reprised on the XJ – with Jaguar’s new Adaptive Dynamics and Active Differential Control technologies present.
Exciting developments can also be found inside the luxurious cabin, with JaguarDrive controls as standard, along side stunning, 12.3-inch high-definition Virtual Instruments complement an innovative, Dual-View technology 8-inch Touch-screen that can project DVD movies or television programmes to the passenger while the driver views vehicle functions or follows satellite navigation.

“The new XJ is a thoroughly modern interpretation of the quintessential Jaguar. Its visual impact stems from the elongated teardrop shape of the car’s side windows, a powerful stance and wide track. It is the most emphatic statement yet of Jaguar’s new design direction.” comments Ian Callum, Design Director at Jaguar cars.
