East of England roadworks update: Monday 20 – Sunday 26 July 2009

NEW WORK

A11 ROUDHAM HEATH RESURFACING WORK
A scheme to improve safety by repairing the surface of the A11 at Roudham Heath, near Thetford, will start on Tuesday 21 July. The work will be carried out over three nights between 8pm and 6am on both the northbound and southbound carriageways. The northbound carriageway will be closed between the A1075 roundabout and the B1111 interchange, a distance of 5.8 miles, while resurfacing is taking place, followed by a full closure of the southbound carriageway.  There will a fully signed diversion route along the A1075 via Stonebridge to its junction with the B1111 and back to the A11/B1111 interchange when the northbound carriageway is closed, which will be reversed when the southbound carriageway is closed.  During peak hours no work will be carried out and there will be no traffic management in place.

A12 ESSEX  MARGERETTING/INGATESTONE – CONSTRUCTION OF EMERGENCY CROSSING POINTWork to improve safety by installing an emergency crossing point on the A12 between Junction 13 (Trueloves Interchange) and Junction 14 (Furze Hill Interchange) will begin on Tuesday 22 July.   The nearside  lane on both the northbound and southbound carriageways will be closed while the work is being carried out between 9pm and 6am over 15 nights,  with work expected to be completed by 20 August.  There will be no speed restrictions in place and no weekend working.

A14 NEWMARKET OVERBRIDGE REPAIRS
Work is due to start on Monday 20 July to repair the Moulton Road Bridge over the A14 near Junction 38 (Waterhall Interchange) east of Newmarket.  Repairs to the concrete bridge beam are necessary to ensure the safety of the structure following an accident  and will be carried out overnight between 9pm and 5am for three nights.  While the work is taking place both lanes of the eastbound carriageway between Junction 38 and Junction 42 (Westley Interchange) will be closed with a fully signed diversion route north on the A11 to the Fiveways Roundabout,  along the A1101 to Fornham All Saints and right onto the B1100 to rejoin the A14 at Junction 42.  The westbound carriageway will not be affected.

A14 slip road resurfacing eastbound at Higham near Bury St Edmunds The eastbound entry slip road on the A14 at Higham (Junction 40) will be closed for resurfacing overnight on Thursday 23 July  from 8pm to 6am on Friday 24 July (one night). Works will involve replacing the slip road surface and replacing the road markings. A signed diversion will direct traffic westbound to the A14 Kentford Interchange with the B1506 (Junction 39) to access the A14 eastbound.

A14 SUFFOLK CLAYDON INTERCHANGE RESURFACING WORK Work to repair the bridge at the Claydon Interchange (Junction 52) near Ipswich will start on Monday 20 July.  The work which involves replacing the bridge surface, waterproofing and drainage, will take place on the westbound carriageway only and will be carried out overnight between 8pm and 6am with additional daytime working on Sundays between 6am and 8pm.  It is due to be completed by 21 August.  There will be a full closure of the westbound carriageway every night while the work is carried out with traffic diverted off the A14 on the Junction 52 off-slip road, around the roundabout and back onto the A14 via the on-slip.  The B1113 will also be closed with traffic diverted via Junction 53.  During Sunday daytime working there will be lane closures and a 50mph speed restriction in place.

A120 BRAINTREE BYPASS RESURFACING WORK
A scheme to improve safety by repairing the carriageway of the A120 on the Braintree bypass at Galleys Roundabout will begin on Thursday 23 July.  The work will be carried out overnight only  between 8pm and 6am  in three phases as follows:

Phase 1:  A120/B1018 westbound  approach to Galleys Roundabout Phase 2:  A120/B1018 westbound from Galleys Roundabout for a distance of 1.30km Phase 3:  Galleys Roundabout itself, including the A120 approaches and the eastbound exit.

There will be lane closures and some side road closures in place with diversions while Phases 2 and 3 are carried out.  During Phase 2 traffic from Long Green or A120 westbound will be diverted south down the B1018 to Freeport Roundabout and back onto the A120 at Galleys Roundabout. During Phase 3 there will  be no access between Galleys Roundabout and Cressing Road with traffic following a diversion via Cressing Road, Chapel Hill and the B1018 Braintree Road for the first stage of the work , followed  by no access between Galleys Roundabout and both Long Green and Galley Roundabout to Freeport Roundabout with a diversion via the B1018 Braintree Road, Polecat Road, The Street and Long Green.  As the work is being carried out overnight on week nights only significant delays are not expected. There will be no work requiring diversion routes undertaken on Thursday nights and there will be no weekend working. The scheme is due for completion on 12 August.

ONGOING WORK

M1 MILTON KEYNES – OVERBRIDGE PARAPET REPLACEMENT A £2m scheme to improve safety on three overbridges on the M1 between Junctions 14 and 15  near Milton Keynes started on Monday 6 July.  The scheme involves replacing the reinforced concrete parapets with metal railed parapets on Tongwell Lane Bridge, Green Farm Bridge and Newport Pagnell Farm Access, all of which carry public footpaths.  Work will be carried out on the overbridges between 7.30 am and 4.30pm Mondays to Fridays with overnight working on the motorway carriageway as follows: 11pm – 5am, Mon- Thurs; 11pm – 6am, Fridays; 10pm – 6am Saturdays; midnight – 5am, Sundays.   While the overnight working is being carried out on the motorway there will be lane closures in both directions, mainly during the first 5 weeks of work, until mid August.   Both Tongwell Lane and Green Farm bridges will be partly closed with public access  maintained.  The Newport Pagnell Farm Access bridge will be fully closed with a pedestrian diversion in place.  The work is expected to be completed by December 15.

A1 TEMPSFORD BRIDGE REPAIRS
Work to improve the safety of the A1 Tempsford Bridge began on Monday 22 June.  From Monday 6 July there will be mid-week night and Friday night lane closures on the southbound carriageway to complete the scheme which involves the removal and replacement of worn-out bearings on the Tempsford Bridge and the refurbishment of drainage gullies on the River Ouse bridge and adjacent bridges.  Overnight lane closures and a 50 mph speed restriction will be in place between 8pm and 6am Monday – Thursday and between 9pm and 9am on Fridays until 29 July.  The scheme is due for completion on 11 August.

A14 OVERNIGHT REPAIRS ON WESTBOUND CARRIAGEWAY FROM NEWMARKET TO M11 Resurfacing work to bring the road surface back to a good standard and improve safety     on the A14 westbound between Junctions 37 and 31 started on Wednesday 1 July.  The work is being carried out in four phases as follows:

36 to 35, which is Six Mile Bottom to Stow cum Quy, from 1 to 9 July;
33 to 32, Milton to Histon, from 9 to 17 July;
32 to 31, Histon to Girton, from 17 to 25 July, and
37 to 36, Newmarket to Six Mile Bottom, from 27 July to 5 August.

The first three phases of work, from 1 to 25 July, will require a full overnight westbound road closure with a signed diversion route which will take westbound traffic off the A14 at junction 36, near Six Mile Bottom, onto the A11 southbound to Great Abington.  Traffic will then be directed onto the A505 to join the M11 at Junction 10.  Diverted traffic will then travel north up the M11 to rejoin the A14 at Girton. The last phase will require lane closures with a 50mph speed restriction, but no diversion. 

A5 MILTON KEYNES IMPROVEMENT WORK
Work to improve safety and repair the carriageway on the A5 between Stony Stratford and the Portway Roundabout (A509/A5) began on Friday 1 May.  Work will include resurfacing as well as repairs to the bridges and will take place overnight on weekdays and at weekends until August. 

Filter Drain Repairs:   From Monday 13 July work will take place between the Old Stratford Roundabout and Portway Interchange to replace the filter drain material on each verge and carry out drainage repairs. The work will be carried out between 10am and 3pm and from 7pm to 7am from Monday to Thursday and from 10am to 2pm on Fridays and from 7pm through to 7am the following Monday until 10 August. There will be some lane closures and a 50mph speed restriction in place but no delays are expected.

A421 (BEDFORD) – M1 J13
Major construction work to build the new eight mile dual carriageway on the northwest side of the existing A421 between M1 J13 and the Bedford Southern Bypass got underway on Thursday 19 February. Motorists are being warned to expect some disruption to their journeys until the improvements are completed in December 2010.

A421 eastbound dual carriageway: Currently closed from Beancroft Road, Marston Moretaine with a contraflow in place on the westbound carriageway.  There is no right turn into or out of the eastbound contraflow section at its junction with Bedford Road (C280) at Marston Moretaine.  The southern end of Lower Shelton Road is currently closed to traffic joining or leaving the A421 until autumn 2009 with a clearly signed diversion route in place.

M1 J13 Bridge Construction: Overnight slip road closures are currently in place to allow for the construction of a new bridge over the M1 and a new roundabout on the A421 at Junction 13.  Closure times as follows:

11pm – 5am,  Monday –Thursday; 11pm – 7 am,  Friday;  9pm – 9am, Saturday;

10pm – 5am,  Sunday.

These overnight slip road closures will be in place until the scheme is completed in December 2010, although no more than two slip roads will be closed on any one night. Advance warning signs will be displayed warning drivers of planned closures and diversion routes will be clearly signposted.  A temporary 50mph speed restriction will be in place on the M1. Lane closures will be in operation but generally three lanes will be in use as the hard shoulder is being used as an additional lane. Approximately 1.25 miles (2km) of the M1 either side of J13 will be affected and these restrictions will apply 24 hours a day until the scheme is completed.

Partial closure of A421/B530 Roundabout (known locally as the Interchange Retail Park roundabout):  Partially closed from Tuesday 24 March with no right turns to or from the westbound carriageway of the A421.  Diversion routes will be clearly signed. 

Work to upgrade A6 Roundabouts: Work to convert three roundabouts on the A6 into traffic light controlled junctions will be taking place on the Progress Park roundabout, the Cowbridge roundabout and the Elstow roundabout until autumn 2009. Lane restrictions and a temporary 30 mph speed limit will be in place to ensure the safety of the workforce.

A47 NORFOLK – HONINGHAM TO EASTON CARRIAGEWAY RESURFACING A scheme to improve the road surface of both carriageways on the A47 between the Barnham Broom Roundabout  and the Taverham Road/Blind Lane crossroads will start on Monday 13 July.   The resurfacing work will be carried out overnight between 8pm and 6am over 9 working nights and is due for completion on Tuesday 24 July.  While the work is taking place there will be a 40mph speed restriction in place on the approaches, with traffic convoyed through the works at 10mph.  Taverham Road and Blind Lane will be closed at their junctions with the A47 and clearly signed diversions will be in place.  No work will be undertaken during peak hours.
