M25 Jct 16 to 23 Widening

20 July 2009

Information sourced from The Highways Agency.

The Project

The M25 is one of Europe's busiest motorways, with some sections handling around 200,000 vehicles every day. It is at the core of our network and is suffering from increasing congestion levels and journey times. We need to manage traffic flows better and to help achieve this we are widening the carriageways from 3 lanes to 4 lanes in each direction.

We shall make use of the existing hard shoulders for the new lanes and create new hard shoulders alongside. We have developed a design to do this within land we already own.  Find out more under Project Background.

We have put together a video that demonstrates the improvements we will make, the different phases of construction and how traffic will be managed during each phase. View the video.

Connect Plus has been appointed as the contractor for these works.

For more information about our works, you can find out more on our Publications page.

Start of Works Exhibitions

We have recently held Exhibitions to publicise the first phase of our forthcoming works. We will hold Start of Works Exhibitions for works on the M25 between Junctions 18 and 23 in 2010 and 2011.

The Works

We commenced works between Junctions 16 and 18 on Wednesday 27 May. We have introduced Traffic Management in stages from Junction 16 northbound. There will be a 50mph speed limit and speed cameras will be operational. We will publish regular details of lane closures and contraflows on the Traffic Management page.

Find out more under Procurement and Timetable.

We will provide regular updates of future lane and carriageway closures.
