A27 Hilsea to Warblington Lighting Major Maintenance Phase 2

The Highways Agency are undertaking the second phase of a £5m lighting, drainage and safety barrier renewal to the A27 between Hilsea to Warblington. Work started on 3rd August and is scheduled to be completed in December 2009, weather permitting.

Work will involve replacement of the existing lighting, drainage and safety fence along approximately two kilometres of dual carriageway, with various localised minor repairs to existing drains, signs and fencing.

Traffic management will be in place on both carriageways from the Langstone Interchange to the Eastern Road Interchange. There will be narrow lanes, with some off-peak lane closures. There will also be two slip-road closures for one night each, with a fully signed diversion in place.

A 40mph speed restriction will be in place for the safety of road users and the workforce, and will be enforced with average speed cameras 24 hours a day.

The A27 will remain open to road users at all times during these works. A cycleway diversion will also be in place.

The works lie close to an internationally important environmental area and there are a number of measures to reduce any environmental impacts. Langstone Harbour and Farlington Marshes lie next to the A27. Work will be undertaken during the summer and autumn to minimise disturbance to the migratory winter geese population. Both Natural England and the Environment Agency have been consulted prior to these works.

The scheme will have long term environmental benefits of reducing lighting spillage and using more energy efficient bulbs in lighting the carriageway.
