DfT Work With CMS SupaTrack On Fuel Saving Solutions

The Department for Transport (DfT) have been working in conjunction with CMS SupaTrak, the vehicle tracking and fuel saving technology specialists, to develop and launch new publications for the Government’s ‘Freight Best Practice’ programme.

The FBP programme has been devised to highlight the importance of fuel saving for freight businesses and shows that by monitoring and managing fuel usage in real time and being able to view reports on driver behaviour it is possible to calculate the inefficiencies caused by ineffective driving. This information, which includes fuel consumption, speed, use of cruise control and time spent driving in the optimum “green band” range, enables businesses to see where their inefficiencies are and therefore gives them the opportunity to address them.

Jason Airey, Managing Director of CMS SupaTrak states; “We have contributed two case studies to the DfT publication; Boarhunt and Norfolkline. Both companies have seen dramatic cost saving across their fleet. By implementing our telematics solutions we are helping businesses across the country to become more efficient and to save money. The DfT publications provide further hints and tips for Fleet managers and demonstrate products’ money saving attributes.”

1. Boarhunt, based in Fareham, Hampshire, is involved in container and specialist haulage and spends in excess of £2 million per year on diesel for its fleet. A before-and-after vehicle performance comparison showed an improvement in miles per gallon from 7.5 to 8.5, equivalent to fuel savings of up to £500 per vehicle per month.

2. Norfolkline, who have recently undertaken a 12 week trial of a telematics system from CMS SupaTrak, showed that savings would cover the regular leasing cost of the technology between 15–20 days each month, dependent on individual vehicle performance.
