Motorists support fines for overrunning roadworks

British motorists have had enough of overrunning according to a new poll by .

An online survey by the car supermarket giant found that 87% of people quizzed supported the Government’s plans to hand out heavy fines to firms who don’t complete road repairs on time.

The news follows details unveiled by Transport Minister Sadiq Kahn late last month for a pioneering new road works permit scheme which when up and running would see companies being hit with penalties of up to £2,500 if they are not finished by an agreed deadline.

Says David Shelton, Managing Director of Motorpoint: “While everyone recognises that repairs are necessary to keep our roads in good, working order, it would appear that more often than not they are running over, causing the UK millions every year. From the results of our poll, motorists have clearly had enough and have unanimously backed the Government’s plans to hit companies where it hurts – with fines running into the thousands for those who don’t complete them by the agreed deadline.”
