M180 safety improvement scheme
A scheme to improve road safety on the M180 near Doncaster starts on Thursday 3 September and is expected to last for 8 weeks.
The Highways Agency will replace the steel central reservation barrier on a 1.9 mile (3km) stretch of the motorway between Junction 1 (Tudworth) and Junction 2 (Belton) with a safer, concrete barrier. The new barrier is stronger and more robust – reducing the risk of vehicles involved in collisions crossing from one side of the motorway to the other. The barriers are also unlikely to require repairs after vehicle impacts, reducing delays to drivers after incidents.
At the same time, the Agency will replace a drain beneath the eastbound carriageway and reconstruct some areas of carriageway. There will be slight delays for drivers and the works will be completed by the end of October.
Motorists are being advised that lane three on the eastbound and westbound carriageway will remain closed throughout the works. Lane two will be closed during off peak periods between 10am to 3.30pm (2pm on Fridays) and overnight (10pm to 6.30am) Monday to Friday. At the weekends work will take place from 9pm on Friday to 6.30am on Monday morning. Work will take place 24 hours a day and for the safety of road workers and road users a 50mph speed restriction will be in place.
Highways Agency project manager Steven Wright said: “This £2.65 million scheme will improve the safety along this stretch of the M180. The new concrete step barriers are stronger and more robust and are maintenance free for 50 years.
“We have carefully planned the works to minimise delays and two lanes will remain available to drivers during peak times. Drivers are advised to approach these roadworks with care and allow extra time for their journeys”
The drainage and carriageway works will take place on the weekends of 5/6 September and 12/13 September. During this time there will various lane closures in place between 9pm on Friday to 6.30am on Monday.
