New safety barrier and safety fence for M62

The Highways Agency will begin work to improve safety for drivers using the on the M62 by renewing the central reserve safety barrier between Junctions 22 (Rishworh Moor) and 23 (Outlane). At the same time, the verge safety fence will be extended and some sections will be renewed. Work will start on Thursday 3 September and is expected to be completed in December.

The work will also include providing an emergency gate in the central reserve that will allow the Highways Agency and emergency services to release trapped traffic in the event of an incident.

Whilst work is being carried out on the central reserve it will be necessary to close lanes two and three. During work on the verge safety fences it will be necessary to close lane one. All of these closures will be carried out overnight between 8pm and 6am in order to minimise the disruption to drivers. During the day there will be some hard shoulder closures.

Highways Agency project manager, Steven Wright said: “These barrier and fence works will increase the safety along this stretch of the M62. Drivers will benefit from the new central reserve gate which will allow us to release trapped traffic in the event of an incident.”
