Early finish likely for A1 Allerdene Bridge refurbishment work
As work on the refurbishment of Allerdene Bridge on the A1 in Gateshead continues well, the Highways Agency is confident that the road will reopen fully almost two weeks ahead of schedule.
A combination of careful planning and good weather has helped the teams on the project and the hope is that, provided the weather stays fair, work should finish during the week ending 18 September instead of the end of month as scheduled.
The planning of the project and the way the work has been carried out has meant that congestion on the A1 has been kept to a minimum and the local authority roads around the scheme have also not been too inconvenienced.
Highways Agency project manager John Sheerin said:
“We are pleased with the way work has progressed and we are hopeful that it will finish early. Bering able to finish the full closure of the road a week early was a major boost and we have been able to continue in this way.
“I should like to thank the local authorities in the area who have deferred their own roadworks while we have been working oat Allerdene and this has had a major impact on making sure local roads have not been too badly affected by the Allerdene scheme.
“We have been told that the bus service operated by Go North East from Chester le Street to Newcastle has, mainly, run to schedule, even when the contraflows have been impact, which is encouraging.
“I am sure that a combination of careful planning, the reasonable weather, especially at key points in the work, and the publicity we gave the scheme have helped it to progress as well as we had hoped.”
