M4 Swindon – work starts on new concrete safety barrier

Work starts to install a new concrete barrier on the central reserve of the between Junctions 15 and 16 on Thursday 3 September.

From Thursday there will be narrow lanes and from Monday 7 September there will be a contraflow.  There will be a 50mph speed limit monitored by average speed cameras.  Three lanes will remain open in each direction throughout the work.  The work will be completed by 15 November.

The barrier replacement will replace the existing steel barrier with a new style concrete barrier.   There will also be drainage work and some verge barriers will also be replaced.

Highways Agency project manager David Frampton said:

“The new concrete barrier will be installed between junctions 15 and 16.  It will replace the previous steel barrier which has reached the end of its life.

“The new barrier is designed to improve safety by reducing the risk of cross-overs.  It will also require less maintenance.

“We will keep three of lanes open in each direction to minimise disruption.  However, some peak time delays should be expected during these essential works and drivers are advised to allow more time for their journeys.”
