SEAT Back ‘Young Driver’ Programme To Address Needless Teenage Road Accidents
SEAT are backing the ‘Young Driver’ training programme, launching this month at Birmingham’s NEC, which will see children as young as 11 years old being offered driving lessons in a controversial bid to quell the shocking toll of teenage road accidents with Government research showing that drivers aged under 20 are nearly 12 times more likely to be involved in a fatal road accident than those aged 35 to 65. The programme will be launched at further venues opening around the UK in the following 12 months including London, Manchester and Edinburgh.
Sponsored by Admiral MultiCar, the Young Driver training programme has been devised to develop the driving skills and attitudes of youngsters before they are old enough to drive on public roads following studies which show that new drivers are much safer on the roads if they start to learn earlier, a new scheme has been launched to instil good driving habits into children aged 11 to 16.
Professor Kevin Morley, Chairman of Young Driver, said "Young Driver has two objectives – to reduce the worryingly high accident rate among new drivers and to give kids a fun and exciting learning experience. We are delighted that our sponsors, SEAT and Admiral MultiCar are committed to these objectives too and we all look forward to tens of thousands of young people benefiting from this initiative over the coming years."
SEAT UK is providing new Ibiza 1.2 models fitted with dual controls, while insurer Admiral MultiCar is sponsoring the programme as part of its ongoing commitment to educating the next generation of motorists.
Steve Robertson, Head of Marketing at SEAT UK, said "The opportunity to support a scheme which not only promises such an exciting experience for young people, but also brings with it the chance to help prepare kids for life out on the open road, is one we simply could not turn down."
Sue Longthorn, Managing Director of Admiral MultiCar, said "As an insurer, we are only too aware of the high accident rate among young motorists. We are delighted to be on board as sponsor of the Young Driver programme".
Lessons, available at weekends and during school holidays, are provided in either 30 or 60 minute slots at £29 or £55 respectively, and are available to children between 11 and 16 with a minimum height of 1.5 metres. All of the Young Driver Instructors are Approved Driving Instructors who have been specially trained to work with young people and have been checked by the Criminal Records Bureau.
