Future Fleet Star: Ford Mondeo Titanium 2.0 115PS TDCi

Fleet staple the Ford Mondeo is shortly to see a new variant which is sure to prove to be a popular edition to the range. Based around Ford’s top end Titanium trim level with the added benefit of Ford’s green ECOnetic technologies, the blue oval is hoping to tempt more business users with this new car.

Available in both the five-door hatchback or estate versions the car will satisfy company car drivers looking to cut tax costs but without compromising vehicle specification. Both body styles have emission figures of 139g/km of CO2, with a combined fuel economy figure of 54.3mpg, which puts the vehicle into Vehicle Excise Duty band E (currently £120 per year).

While benefitting from Ford ECOnetic environmental features, this new model is otherwise identical to the standard Titanium series.  The following features are added to help reduce CO2 emissions and improve fuel economy:

  • 16in Y-Spoke lightweight alloy wheels (standard)
  • 17in Y-spoke alloys (option)
  • An optimum gear change indicator
  • Aerodynamically optimised sports suspension and air deflectors
  • Rear spoiler (five-door only)

The blue oval has positioned the car slightly above the existing Titanium 2.0 140PS TDCi, which has CO2 emissions of 187g/km and band J for VED purposes, in its price list, but it still remains a competitively priced option for business and fleet users looking at reducing costs of fuel and tax yet unwilling to run a car with a reduced level of specification.

Ford has recently introduced, for the first time, start/stop engine technology into its product line-up with the new Ford Focus ECOnetic the first model to benefit from this green technology. The good news is that this technology is scalable and it is highly likely to filter through into other models during 2010 and while Ford has yet to confirm it for the Mondeo (or Fiesta) we would expect to see both cars feature start/stop technology in their ECOnetic badged cars before the end of 2010.

For petrol lovers, all is not lost as Ford’s new Ecoboost petrol engine (which delivers a 20% saving in fuel but returns the same amount of power) is due to launch as a 1.6 litre engine when the C-Max and Grand C-Max hit the UK during the summer of 2010. At the recent Frankfurt Motor Show, Ford confirmed that different sized Ecoboost engines were currently in development, so again it is only a matter of time until we see a petrol Ecoboost Mondeo.
