A27 Southerham Bridge Refurbishment, Near Lewes, East Sussex
Work to refurbish the Southerham railway bridge on the A27 in East Sussex will take place over two consecutive weekends starting Friday 23 October.
The bridge, which is south-east of Lewes, will have parts of the structure replaced as well as the road over the bridge resurfaced and re-waterproofed.
For the safety of road users and road users, there will be a weekend closure of the eastbound carriageway followed by a weekend closure of the westbound carriageway between the Ashcombe and Southerham roundabout over consecutive weekends.
The eastbound carriageway will be closed from 9pm on Friday 23 October to 5am on Monday 26 October. Following this, there will be overnight single lane closures between 8pm and 5am on the eastbound carriageway until the next weekend.
The westbound carriageway will be closed from 9pm on Friday 30 October to 5am on Monday 2 November. Following this, there will be overnight single lane closures between 8pm and 5am on the westbound carriageway until Wednesday 4 November.
The work is weather dependant and if conditions during either weekend are unsuitable, the work will be carried out at a later date.
Bala Vishnubala, Highways Agency Structures Manager, said:
“Refurbishing the bridge now will avoid any unplanned closures causing disruption to road users. We have planned this work to limit delays by working around the clock on consecutive weekends. We would ask drivers to allow plenty of time for their journeys during the closures”.
A fully-signed diversion route will be in place on both weekends
