fuelGenie: Driving Tips For The Fuel Conscious
fuelGenie, the people who produce the money saving company fuel card exclusively for use at around 1000 supermarket forecourts, has now produced its top ten fuel saving tips to save you even further money:
1. over revving accelerates emissions, wastes fuel and increases engine wear; change up before 2,500 rpm (petrol) and 2,000 rpm (diesel)
2. Idling wastes fuel and adds to CO2 emissions; if you’re likely to be at a standstill for more than three minutes or are stuck in traffic, switch off the engine
3. Modern vehicles do not require time to ‘heat up’ so drive away immediately after starting the engine.
4. Under-inflated tyres increase fuel consumption and emissions, and are dangerous so check your tyre pressure regularly, especially before long journeys; remembering that a vehicle with a heavier load may need different air pressure in the tyres
5. Avoid taking short journeys where possible as a cold engine can use almost twice as much fuel and catalytic converters can take up to five miles to become effective
6. Staying at or within the speed limit increases driver safety and reduces CO2 emissions. e.g. driving illegally at 80mph rather than 70mph on a motorway uses 10–15% more fuel, and at 70mph, up to 9% more than at 60mph
7. Less clutter in / attached to your vehicle means less weight and drag, thus lower CO2 emissions and fuel usage
8. Anticipate road conditions to avoid sharp acceleration and heavy braking; monitor traffic ahead and slow down early to increase the changes of stationary traffic moving off before you get to it
9. Plan your journeys and so avoid congestion, road works and getting lost, as heavy traffic and trying to find your way can lead to fuel wastage
10.Air conditioning increases fuel consumption so should be minimised
