Public invited to view detailed plans for A1 Elkesley improvements in Nottinghamshire

Members of the public are invited to view detailed plans and have their say on the Elkesley improvements in Nottinghamshire at two exhibitions taking place next week.

The scheme will improve safety and journey time reliability by replacing the junctions on this stretch of the A1, which carries about 40,000 vehicles per day.

The exhibitions, which follow last month’s publication of the draft Orders for the scheme, will be held at Elkesley Village Memorial Hall, Elkesley on Friday, 20 November between 2pm and 8pm and Saturday 21 November between 11am and 6.30pm.

Members of the Highways Agency’s project team will be available to explain the proposals and answer any questions.

People will then have until Friday, 22 January to express support for, object to or otherwise comment on the Orders.

Depending on the nature and weight of any objections to the proposals, a Public Inquiry may need to be held in Spring 2010. Following the outcome of any public inquiry, unless significant changes are needed to the scheme requiring the draft orders to be republished or withdrawn, the draft Orders are expected to be confirmed in Autumn 2010 so the work can start in late 2010 or early 2011. The work is expected to be completed in the second half of 2012, at the earliest.

Alan Darby, project manager for the Highways Agency, said:

“People in Elkesley have long campaigned for improvements to the A1 junctions.  The publication of the draft Orders allows people the chance to look at the detailed proposals for the Elkesley junctions and to register formally their support or any objection they might have. We hope to see lots of people at the exhibitions so we can explain the proposals further.”

Anyone who would like to comment on the proposals may do so until Friday 22 January 2010. Comments should be sent to the Secretary of State for Transport, c/o Highways Agency, Network Operations Directorate East Midlands Division, C3, 5 Broadway, Broad Street, Birmingham B15 1BL.
