Weekly Roundup of Roadworks in Surrey, Hampshire, South Oxfordshire and South Berkshire – 12/11/2009
A traffic management summary for both new and ongoing work
All of the following work is dependant on suitable weather conditions.
A34 Newbury
Work to resurface the A34 near Newbury, between Tot Hill and the junction with the A339 just south of the A34/M4, started in early July and will continue until end of November 2009, weather permitting.
The scheme is being undertaken to replace 12km of road surface on both the northbound and southbound carriageways. Two lanes of traffic will be open in each direction during peak travel periods throughout the work, and a contra-flow system will be used where necessary. A 50mph speed limit will be in place for the duration of the work.
At times overnight, between 10:00pm to 6:00am, there will be full carriageway closures – see details below – including slip road closures. When these closures are needed traffic will either be directed through a contraflow or be diverted via the A34, B4640 and the A339 which will be fully signed. Tuesday 10 November 10:00pm – 6:00am: There will be a full closure of the northbound carriageway between Tothill and Chieveley
Wednesday 11 November 10:00pm – 6:00am: There will be a lane 1 closure to both the northbound and southbound carriageways, between Chieveley and Tothill.
A31 Resurfacing
Resurfacing works will be taking place on the A31 eastbound between Tricketts Cross and the Azalea Roundabout from 6 November for approximately 7 nights. Works will be undertaken overnight under convoy working between 20:30 – 06:00hours, weather permitting.
M4 Junction 5 – 7
Daytime and overnight work to renew bridge parapets, safety fences, and waterproofing the bridge decks continues this week. Three narrow lanes will be maintained in each direction. A 50mph speed restriction will be in force and free recovery in place. This speed restriction and narrow lanes will remain until the work is complete in Spring 2010.
A404(M)
Work is underway for replacing the Western Region Railway Bridge on the A404(M) near Maidenhead. Two narrow lanes will be available at peak times in each direction throughout. A 40mph speed limit will be in place for the safety of drivers and the workforce. Overnight there will be the occasional contra-flow and lane and slip road closures with signed diversions.
M3 Junction 4-3 Drainage Phase 2
The northbound off-slip at Junction 3 will be closed from 2200hrs on Friday 13 November to 0500hrs on Monday 16 November for resurfacing works. There will be 24hr working over this weekend, and a fully signed diversion route via M25 J12 will be in place.
Drainage work continues this week on M3 between J4 and 3, and is scheduled to be completed in December 2009, weather permitting. A longer northbound exit slip road taking traffic off the M3 at Junction 3 is being constructed to improve safety and reduce congestion both on the slip road and on the M3 itself. There is a contra-flow on the M3 in place for drainage improvement work, which will remain until the slip road has been extended.
Ongoing all six lanes of the motorway will remain open on the M3 each day, with lane closures where necessary carried out overnight. For the safety of drivers and the workforce, a 50mph speed limit will be enforced throughout the work by average speed cameras. There will be free vehicle recovery service.
M3 J4 Blackwater Valley Bridge Works
Bridge maintenance work on the M3 at Junction 4 is scheduled to start this week on 5 November until the end of December, weather permitting.
These works are required to maintain the safety and long-term serviceability of the structure..
To minimise disruption to roadusers and for the safety of the site staff, work will be undertaken at night between 22.00hrs and 06.00hrs. It will be necessary to reduce the carriageway to single lane running whilst the works are taking place. It will also be necessary on occasions to close the J4 slip roads overnight for the deck expansion joints to be installed. When slip road closures are in place, full signed local diversions to Junction 4a will be in place.
A34 Wolvercote Viaduct replacement scheme Ongoing there is a 40mph speed limit in place and two narrow lanes running both northbound and southbound on the A34 enforced by average speed cameras. The speed limit is in place for the protection of road users and road workers.
Also ongoing, the A40, which runs under the viaduct, has a 30mph speed limit and will require night time off-peak temporary traffic lights at times. Intermittent short term closures will be required of one of the cycleway/footways through 2009 to continue construction activities. Localised signed diversion routes will operate, with a temporary signalised pedestrian crossing on the east side of the Wolvercote viaduct to assist cyclists and pedestrians with a safe crossing point.
A3(M) Filter Drain
Maintenance work on the drains on the northbound A3(M) between J3 and 1 started on 2 October, and is scheduled to be completed by 18 November, weather permitting. To keep disruption to a minimum work will be undertaken at night under lane closures between 20.00hrs and 04.30hrs
A27 Hilsea to Warblington Lighting Major Maintenance Work continues this week on the second phase of works along a 2km of the A27 between Hilsea and Warblington in order to replace the existing lighting and drainage as well as carrying out safety barrier renewals. The work is scheduled to be complete in December 2009, weather permitting.
Traffic Management will be in place on both carriageways from the Langstone Interchange to the Eastern Road Interchange and will consist of narrow lanes with some off-peak lane closures. There will also be two slip-road closures for one night each, with a fully signed diversion in place.
This week there will be overnight lane closures between 21:00hrs and 05:30hrs on both carriageways to allow central reserve works to take place.
For the safety of road users and the workforce there will be a 40mph speed limit enforced with average speed cameras.
Traffic Signal Upgrade
A series of traffic signal upgrades across the region continues this month at various junctions on the Area 3 network. The work will involve replacing the current bulbs with new LED signal heads at over 40 sites over the next ten months. The new LED signal heads are brighter and lower voltage, offering safety environmental and maintenance benefits.
This week, work will be carried out to the M4 J13 traffic signals. The works began on 9 November and are scheduled to be complete by 13 November, weather permitting, and will take place between 10.00am and 4.00pm or between those times and from 9.00pm to 4.00am. Temporary traffic lights will be in use whilst the work is carried out, as well as possible lane closures.
A3 Hindhead
Major improvement work to improve the A3 and remove the current bottleneck at Hindhead traffic lights continues this week. Traffic management for the scheme starts just before the A3 Thursley junction at the north end (nearest to Guildford) with a temporary road layout and 40mph speed limit. At the south end there is a 50mph limit starting south of the A3 Liphook junction, reducing to 40mph at Hammer Lane.
