Major Resurfacing Scheme for M6 in Cumbria

A major resurfacing scheme for one of the highest stretches of motorway in the country – nearly five miles of the M6 northbound in Cumbria – has just got underway.

The £1.2 million project between junction 38 at Tebay and junction 39 at Shap  is due to be finished by Wednesday 23 December. The hard shoulder and all three lanes will be resurfaced.

The work, which began on Sunday (November 15) will be carried out between 10pm and 6am to minimise disruption to traffic.  But a 50 mph speed limit will be in force for the duration of the scheme. There will also be hard shoulder and lane closures as the scheme progresses.

Speed limits through roadworks are only ever used to ensure the safety of both road users and the road workers involved in the scheme.  Drivers are asked to respect the limits through roadworks.

James Theobalds, Highways Agency project manager, said:

“This is an important scheme to replace a worn out road surface which will make the motorway safer and journeys more reliable. This is one of the highest sections of motorway in the country and subject to the worst of the winter weather so we ask motorists to take extra care when travelling through the work. They should also allow extra time for their journeys.”
