TomTom System Provides Vital Evidence In Accident Case

A private ambulance operator, who recently had one of their vehicles involved in an accident was able to use the data from a recently installed TomTom WORK unit to prove that their driver taking reasonable care when responding to an emergency. MediForce Limited were able to show that the emergency warning system had been activated and the precise speed at which the vehicle had been travelling, fully satisfying police investigations into the accident.

All of this information and a great deal more is routinely gathered through the LINK 300 tracking device installed in each of their ambulances and rapid response vehicles. It is transmitted in real time back to their head office at Slough where it is processed using the WEBFLEET® software from TomTom. This gives MediForce up-to-date and historical data on the operation of their vehicles that can be used to meet ‘due diligence’ requirements.

To complete the connected navigation system each vehicle is also fitted with a GO 7000 unit, which combines class-leading satellite navigation with instant two-way communications using safe touch screen technology.

David Hibbert, Managing Director UK Operations, MediForce Limited, says: “The system not only gives us much better control over the deployment of our vehicles, it can also provide vital information to assist our teams in emergencies because of its excellent satellite navigation and communications capabilities. And it is particularly useful for long distance routing where we may be transporting patients to and from areas with which our crew may not be familiar.”

“It can also provide us with a great deal of other information to help us improve our service to customers and to identify opportunities for increased efficiency and cost savings within our operation. For example, we can identify instances of excessive idling and take action to avoid those, thus saving fuel and cutting emissions. And we can monitor the hours of our crews more accurately.”

The installation of the system carries a unique feature whereby the data cable port in the LINK 300 tracker is linked to the button that activates the ‘blues and twos’, so that WEBFLEET could record the precise times that these were in use.

“The TomTom WORK system is proving a great benefit to our business. It is helping make us more effective in the emergency role, more efficient in our routine daily operations, and assisting us to meet our due diligence obligations,” says Mr Hibbert. “I have been particularly impressed by the service provided by In Car Technology, which was absolutely first class.”
