Weekly Summary of Roadworks in Kent and Sussex – 26/11/2009

A traffic management summary for both new and ongoing work

All of the following work is dependant on suitable weather conditions.

A20 Folkestone Road Lay-By Enhancements
Upgrading work to the Folkestone Road Lay-by near Dover in Kent continues this week. The work is being carried out during the day Monday to Friday. For the safety of road users and the workforce, the lay-by is closed for the duration of the work, and there will be daytime off-peak lane one closures and a temporary 50mph speed limit throughout the work.

A21 Pembury Bypass Exit Slip Widening Work Work continues to widen the A21 London bound exit slip road for the A264 / A228. There remains a 24 hour narrowed lane on the A21 London bound exit slip road for A264 / A228 with temporary 50mph speed limit on approach to the exit slip road and a 50mph speed limit on the A21 London bound entry slip road from A228 Pembury Road.

A259 Tree Works
There continues to be a single lane closure on the A259 between Pevensey in East Sussex and Brenzett in Kent on one carriageway at a time with two or three way temporary traffic lights. The work started Monday 14 September for 12 weeks Monday to Friday only. The work is to remove dead dying and hazardous trees from the side of the road. The lane closure and traffic lights will be fully signed in advance.

A20 Roundhill Tunnel Service Building New Access Road Work continues to build a new access road to the main service building for Roundhill Tunnel on the A20 near Folkestone in Kent. The London-bound entry slip road at the junction remains closed, with a fully signed diversion route in place, until February 2010.

M2 Driver Location Signs
Work continues to install new signs along the whole length of the M2 to help drivers identify their location in case they need to contact the Highways Agency or emergency services.  There will be off peak daytime (9.30am-4.30pm) mobile hardshoulder closures bewteen junction 1-3 on both carriageways from Monday 16 to Friday 20 November

A20 New Dover Road Lay-By Improvements
Work continues to upgrade an existing lay-by on the A20 New Dover Road, Dover until early December. The lay-by will be closed and there remains an overnight lane one closure and temporary 50mph speed limit on the London bound carriageway for the duration of the work.

A27 Oving Right Hand Turn Facility
Work continues on the A27 to provide a right turn facility at Oving Road. During the work, vehicles travelling westbound will not be able to turn right from the A27 into Oving Road. The diversion will be via the Bognor roundabout to return on the eastbound carriageway to turn left into Oving Road. Similarly, eastbound road users wishing to turn right into Shopwhyke Road from the A27 will be diverted via the Portfield roundabout to return on the westbound carriageway to continue their journey.

Road users wishing to turn right onto the A27 from Oving Road will be diverted via the Portfield roundabout to return on the westbound carriageway and road users wishing to turn right from Shopwhyke Road will be diverted via the Bognor roundabout to return on the eastbound carriageway. Lane closures and a 50mph speed limit will be in place throughout the work.

A2 Jubilee Way
Works continue to install a new system on the coastbound side of A2 Jubilee Way in Dover, Kent to keep the road free of ice and snow in cold weather.  The coastbound carriageway will be closed between 8pm and 6am on Friday Saturday and Sunday nights for the next six weekends from Friday 6 November.  A fully signed diversion route will be in place during these times.

A2 Kingston Bridleway Bridge
Preparation works for a new bridleway bridge allowing a safe way of crossing the A2 near Canterbury started early November and the bridge will be ready for use by February 2010.
The new bridge will be at Kingston, halfway between Black Robin Lane and Out Elmstead Lane and will provide a safe place for pedestrians, cyclists, horse riders and wheelchair users to get over the A2.
For the safety of road users and road workers, there will be a 24-hour single lane closure and temporary 50mph speed limit in both directions for the duration of the work for foundations for the bridge to be put in place.
For the installation of the bridge itself, there will be up to three Saturday night closures of the A2 from the junction with Coldharbour Lane to the junction with the A260 Canterbury Road.

A26 Route Signing Improvements
From Monday 16 to Friday 27 November there will be overnight (8pm – 6am) lane closures at various locations on the A26 on one carriageway at a time with traffic controlled past the works by two way temporary traffic lights.  The works are to improve route signing and road markings along the A26.  The lane closures and temporary traffic lights will be fully signed in advance.

A27 Vegetation Works
Works started on Monday 9 November to clear vegetation and remove dead dying and hazardous trees around the A27 in East and West Sussex.  The works which are being carried out overnight between 8pm and 6am involved lane closures on dual carriageway sections of the A27 with single lane closures with temporary traffic lights on single carriageway sections.

A2 Jubilee Way Diversion Signs
Work  is being carried out on the A2 Jubilee Way to replace existing diversion signs with electronic variable message signs. There will be an overnight (8pm – 6am) single lane closure with temporary traffic lights on the coastbound A2 just before Whitfield Roundabout, near Dover from Tuesday 24 to Friday 27 November. From Monday 30 November until just before Christmas there will be overnight narrow lanes from Guston Roundabout to the approach of Jubilee Way. The lane closure with temporary traffic lights and the narrow lanes will be fully signed in advance.

M20 Ashford Road Bridge Works
There will be overnight (8pm-6am) single lanes closures on the M20 coastbound and London bound carriageway at junction 8 from Tuesday 24 to Friday 27 November.  The works are to carry out repairs to the deck of Ashford Road Bridge.  The lane closures will be fully signed in advance.
