Improved Safety for A27 at Polegate

To improve safety for both road users and pedestrians around Polegate in East Sussex, the speed limit on part of the town’s bypass on the is being reduced. Other changes being made by the Highways Agency include relocating the puffin pedestrian crossing and removing the associated traffic lights on Cophall Farm roundabout.

The first phase of the work, planned to be carried out before Christmas, will involve lowering the current 60mph speed limit to 50mph on the A27 between Polegate railway bridge and the roundabout. In the New Year, relocation of the puffin crossing 120 metres south of the roundabout as well as removal of the traffic signals will take place.

The changes will be made from Monday 7 December for seven weeks, Monday to Friday between 8pm and 6am. Work will be suspended over Christmas.

For the safety of road users and road workers, there will be a lane closure on one carriageway at a time with temporary two-way traffic signals in place in the period before Christmas.  Whilst work is taking place on removing the traffic signals and moving the puffin crossing in January, there will be lane closures, traffic management and a temporary 40mph speed limit on the roundabout and Polegate bypass.

Martin Wright, Highways Agency Route Performance Manager for East Sussex, said:

“Relocating the puffin crossing 120 metres south of its original location will provide a safer crossing point for pedestrians. The lowered speed limit compliments the change and will help to improve safety for road users and pedestrians.”
